Even devoted series fans despised Friday the 13th, Part V. It's not because of its overall poor quality, but because this time, "Jason" is an imposter; a man seeking revenge for the death of his son. This fact is not revealed until the very end, but since it is such common knowledge among genre fans, I feel blameless in discussing it here. The truth is, the film is so arbitrary that it would have made no difference even if Jason had truly risen from his grave, where he must have been rolling for the duration of the film. Director Danny Steinmann seems to be aiming for a murder mystery type of story, suggesting that the killer may be a mental patient or some redneck. However, this element is so ineptly handled that it simply doesn't matter. It's just a bad slasher movie that lurches from one kill scene to another, peopled with cartoonishly obnoxious characters who deserve what they get. There's plenty of gore and female nudity, but even then, it never rises from the muck.

For the most part, the performances are strictly amateur night, although John Shepherd does a decent job as Tommy Jarvis, a decade or so after part 4. Shavar Ross does his best, though kid characters in horror movies are almost always annoying. (Exception: Halloween.) Melanie Kinnaman is okay; at least she doesn't embarrass herself. Otherwise, most of the actors, who shall remain nameless, deserve to have their SAG cards torn up, especially that Michael Jackson wannabe. Why do actors do these movies anyway? Are they that desperate for the money? Don't they know that appearing in a Jason flick is a guaranteed career-killer? I think one actress was denied a promising role in an Oliver Stone film for that reason. To be fair, there's little that can be done with such poor material.

The only good part is the flashback in the beginning, featuring a cameo by Corey Feldman. Otherwise, it's pure and utter drivel; poorly acted (discounting the above exceptions), written, and directed. I'm not a snob; I actually enjoyed parts 6 and 7 at times, though otherwise the films are just average slasher movies. I'm giving this one a bad review simply because I found no chills or thrills in this unfortunate sequel. I tend to be fairly critical of horror movies, and this one deserves a good thrashing. Didn't this one actually send fans protesting at Paramount's gates? See, even with the fans, you can't throw just anything at them; they know what they want too.

1/10.

I also didn't like it for all the same reasons. It's not a Jason movie! I am giving it a higher grade though because a few of the killings were well done (my favorite was that guy, the belt, and the tree...)

When I watch Friday the 13th V I try to see it as a stand alone film that has several references to the friday the 13th series. As a stand alone film it does have it's moments several interesting kills and a surprise killer that was only reveald to us at the end of the film. All in all it's an okay way to spend 2 hours.

My Grade 5/10

Well I certainly like the nice picture you posted http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Is that picture taken from a sex scene?

Anyways, is this the movie where a guy fucks the chick in the wodos, goes off to take a piss, and then gets his head tied to a tree with a belt, with the belt going through his skull?

btw: your same review is posted at IMDB

I dislike the movie for many of the same reasons listed here. My biggest beef with the film is that the murders don't make any sense. Okay, so Roy Burns is pissed because his little retard got killed right? Half of the murders don't even take place at the halfway house! A lot of them take place out of town. The diner scene, the trailer park, the two rednecks etc. This half-wit managed to kill just about everybody EXCEPT for the guy who killed his son.

I have a much more extensive review at my site.

"Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning"

2/10

Plot: Tommy Jarvis (from Part 4) is all grown up and trying to transition from mental hospital to the real world. Of course this means being sent to a halfway house for troubled youth at....Crystal Lake! The horny teens of the halfway house soon meet up with a masked killer resembling the old Voorhees guy...

Review: Just when you think it couldn't get worse than Part 3, Paramount has to go and prove us all wrong. Where to begin?

Well as Cyclonus pointed out, our legendary anti-hero isn't really himself in this one. Bad call...the fans are coming to see the film for one reason only and it ain't a random paramedic. The story goes nowhere...it would be nice to have Tommy do something more than either hallucinate or pull some ultimate fighting stunts. The window dressing characters are horrible- the black Michael Jackson ripoff with the taco shits, the two tone hair girl doing the Robot, sluts A and B, token adults A and B, redneck mama, and one of the most annoying characters ever put on film- redneck son who just repeats everything that is said and randomly hollers.

Even the kills in this film lack imagination. I know that the machete is Jason's trademark but after four films there should be a little extra. We get a flare used inappropriately and the aforementioned belt through the eyes. Sigh.

All in all a completely forgettable installment in the series. Bad story, bad acting, bad kills, bad characters, bad ending. What's the keyword here, kids?
