spoilers.

dogma was a very strange movie indeed, and that shit monster was nothing short of disgusting.

so god is a she, and life is a bitch, so that fits and jesus is black and there were 13 apostles, but they choose to leave rufus out and two fallen angels had to cross this arch and then get killed so they can get back into heaven, and that would prove god wrong and the world would be no more, i was a little disapointed that they didn't get back into heaven, would of been so great if they had but it weren't to be.

all in all, it was a good film, and i thank them who said i should watch this film, it is worth watching, if only for Bartleby and loki.

You forgot to mention Jason Lee! He has the best delivery in that whole movie! "Give me a...Holy Bartender!" You should check the DVD to see his deleted monolouge, it's killer!
8/10.

Dogma is the whole package...and then SOmE! We have comedy, we have the Affleck Damon Duo, the Jay and Silent Bob duo! We have Chis Rock, we have an extremely intelligent well written script, with crisp dialogue and Superb acting performances to enhance it all. We have Selma Hayeck we have blood we have gore, demons with hockey sticks, a God who has a fetish for skiball and George Carlin is a man of the Cloth! Not to mention Buddy "thumbs up" Christ, alcholic angels who are not allowed to drink alcohol, a tittie bar scene, armegeddon, special effects, lots of snoochie motherfuckin' boochies, "OH MY FUCKING GOD JASON FUCKING LEE", And to top it all off Alannis Morisette is God!
Call me crazy but this film is a masterpiece in it's own right. Never has there been a funnier, more clever, well written and directed spoof on the Catholic Religion. Bravo..Bravo.. fucking Bravo!

I find that most Kevin Smith fans don't generally like this film. I'm not a big Smith fan, but I loved this flick. It's probably because I can identify with the subject matter because I went to Bible College, but I give Dogma an 8/10. I'll admit, the film never delved into the problems of the church as much as I would have liked, but it was a terrific satire of organized religion. I can definitely see why Catholics were pissed, although I don't agree with them.

First off, the controversy issue. I really fail to see why people were up in arms about Dogma, to me the movie is a love letter to FAITH. Not religion, but faith. What Smith is saying is that religion doesn't have to be organised but that faith is vital. I don't see how religious people could find that objectionable.

On to the movie itself. To clarify, I'm a fan of Kevin Smith's work, Chasing Amy is one of my favourite films of all time but for me Dogma was a disappointment on almost every level.

By bringing in the religious themes Smith loses what I find to be his films greatest strength, the skill of his depictions of normal people. By introducing his larger themes he loses sight of this and the script suffers.
The plot is complex and requires a lot of exposition, not nessecaruialy a problem, but for the love of god, why is that exposition given as the shit demon is coming towards the characters? This timing not only defuses the action but means that Salm Hayek has to rush through her speech and we only really get bits of what is said.

This may just be me but I thought, in this film, Jay and Silent Bob were the least funny they have been, a big problem given their expanded roles.

I found only two big laughs in the movie.
1: The unveiling of the 'Buddy Christ'
2: (a gag that many may have missed) An announcement at the hospital 'This is not a drill, this IS the apocalypse, repeat...'

Even the other jokes were hampered by the need for exposition, leaving too long between laughs.

Dogma is a more visual film than Smith has previously attempted and this shows up his shortcomings as a director.

Dogma is not a bad film per se. In fact I found it utterly average and compared to Smith's other output it suffers badly.

Dogma: 5/10

Even though I really like Dogma I think you make an excellent point here. I have often wondered if Smith should let someone else direct his films and just stick to screenwriting.

Some things seemed out of place in Dogma probably because Smith hadn't worked on a film like this before, but it ruled. The only bad thing was the ending...it blew!

Dogma - 7.5/10

Dogma is a very funny and over-the-top movie with an incredible all-star cast including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Selma Hayek, Jason Lee, Alan Rickman, George Carlin, and of course Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob). It is Kevin Smith's most ambitious effort to date as both a writer and director.

For all those who were upset at Smith's attempt to satirize the Catholic religion, I don't think he was making fun of it, instead it seemed more that he was pointing out the church's problems in a clever way. The story, if weird, is still interesting and held my attention throughout the whole movie in a way which most comedies fail to do. The best characters are Rufus, the "13th Apostle", played by Chris Rock; Azrael, played by Jason Lee; and of course Jay and Silent Bob. The funniest part to me was when they showed the Buddy Christ at the beginning, it is hilarious!

Overall this film gets an 8/10 from me, better than Chasing Amy but not as good as Clerks. And for once I have to say I liked Affleck better than Damon in this movie. And who would have ever thought Alanis Morisette was God (no wonder her whiny bitchy album sold so many copies)! Definitely a good film if you are looking for something which is off the beaten path.
