"Hollywood Had It Coming"
Synopsis: Offbeat road comedy follows two New Jersey stoners who travel cross-country to foil the Hollywood production of a film version of a comic book (based on them). Along the way, they stop in Kansas, meet some sultry jewel thieves, pick up a goofy orangutan, and infiltrate the Miramax studio lot.
Review: I finally got to see "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" today and I have to say that I was suprised. I was suprised because it wasn't as good as I thought it would have been. I think the reason was because the plot wasn't enough to keep me interested. They could have put some more thinking into it.
However, there were a few laughs and Shannon Elizabeth, Eliza Duskhu and Ali Larter wearing tight leather outfits and shaking their ass on the screen got my attention. It didn't feel like a Kevin Smith film though. The script wasn't as good as it usually is in his other films mostly because the dialogue isn't up to par. I very much enjoyed all the cameos and the piss-takes of the movies. "Planet of the Apes" and "Scream" had me chuckling.
Because I haven't seen all the View Askew films, I thought I would get some of the jokes, but I actually got a few of them. The problem is, if you haven't seen any of Kevin Smith's earlier films then you'll miss some of the jokes. Another thing is, there was too much swearing in the film. I don't mind bad language, but there was no need for some of it.
Overall, the film didn't have me laughing as much as I hoped and the story didn't get much of my attention. It's fun enough to watch though.

Does a mall eatery constitute as part of the food court?
Hmmm, being a huge Kevin Smith fan, I was (for once) disappointed with this dull and lifeless entry. Sure, Smith is a great mugger (gotta love those facial expressions), but this turned into a live action cartoon, and not a very funny one at that. The film derives most of its humor from the stars poking fun at themselves. There are barbs at Phantoms, Legend of Bagger Vance, and Armageddon, but none this really hits the bullseye. It's all very scattershot.
The humor is much like that of Mallrats' (which, slap me, I liked a LOT more), but most of the time it is too self referential. There are some clever barbs at Hollywood and Mirimax, but c'mon, was the View Askewniverse ever about satirizing celebrities? Put it like this, Jay and Bob doesn't do to Hollywood what Dogma did to the Catholic church.
On the bright side, there are many funny cameos, but they are the plot's only driving force.
I give this a 5 out of 10

Schmoes: Listen up and listen up closely. Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back is not a mainstream film. It is not a film meant to stand on its own merits. It is actually less a film, and more a Pay-off, or big Thank You, from Kevin Smith to all his fans for supporting his last four films.
This film is supposed to be self-referential, cameo filled; this movie is one big inside joke. For me, being a huge Kevin Smith fan, I love Jay and Silent Bob. I love their small roles and cameos in all his previous films. And I fucking love it that now Smith has created a film where they are front-and-center main characters! Without the build-up of the previous four films there is no way this film could make it on its own, however, the previous four films have, very nicely, set up for this movie-- the pay-off -- the cherry atop the viewaskew universe sundae.
To have viewed all the previous films, and enjoyed them, and to then give this movie a bad rating is abso-fucking-lutely mind-boggling too me.

Bud Fox's review is probably one of the best I've ever seen in regards to this movie.
I never really thought of it as a payoff movie...but when viewing it in contrast to the earlier KS flicks, it makes sense.
To be honest, I'm surprised that Jay and Silent Bob could carry an entire movie by themselves. Good job View Askew.
And Affleck ROCKED in Phantoms yo!

I think the video capsule board is suffering a sloooow, tortuous death.

I just watched JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK for the first time today and I really enjoyed it. I loved the way it took the piss out of Hollywood. The cameos are terrific. The movie is very, very funny! I remember laughing so hard at one point (Shannon Elizabeth entering the restuarant!) that it hurt. The movie is very enjoyable, I've watched it twice today. What lets it down is the poor climax, I didn't find the Star Wars thing funny. And the whole Morris Day thing was kinda stupid. Still, on the whole, a smart and enjoyable movie.

Since my last post I've watched this movie a couple of times over again and I'd now grade it an 8/10. Those who didn't like it first time around I recommend a second (or third, as it might end up http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif) viewing.

As a fan of the ViewAskewniverse I totally agree. In Smith's dvd commentary he acknowledges that while they sold it as a movie even the non "fan-boy" would appreciate, in fact it isn't. If you liked Smith's previous stuff, you'll enjoy this -- otherwise you just won't get most of the in-jokes.
