Brain Candy (1996)
Boy oh boy, what happened here, folks?! I used to LOVE the "Kids in the Hall" TV show and always thought that each of the "kids" were funny in their own right, but this movie was JUST NOT FUNNY!
And you can't really blame anyone other than the kids themselves since it's their names on the screenplay. Sure the direction was a little over-the-top and the production looked more like a TV show than an actual movie, but in the end, none of that would really have mattered if the script had been funny, but alas, no laughs came.
Actually, I won't lie. There was ONE very funny scene featuring an ungrateful son coming home from X-Mas and walking around the living room for about 30 seconds and then leaving, but other than the odd funny one-liner, the rest of the movie tanked.
If anybody knows what happened with this film, I would love some insight. There ain't much more I can say about this film. It was supposed to be a comedy, but it just wasn't funny. End of story. I did enjoy the "kids" playing dress-up as usual though.
Stars Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson

I, sadly, was also very disappointed with the Kids in the Hall movie. Unlike their SNL counterparts, the Kids always stayed funny and knew when to leave the show before things started going downhill.
Brain Candy had its moments and there was one which stood out in particular. Scott Thompson plays the "overworked" business man father who's also a closet homosexual. At one point in the movie, they break out into this big musical production number where he sings" "I'm gay! I'm gay!" or something along those lines. That's probably the funniest scene in the movie. Overall, probably a 5/10

This film fits in with my not-able-to-rate list, which includes Chris Farley films, Norm McDonald films and John Belushi Films to list a few...
This film was definitely bad, but I also am very fond of the Kids In The Hall show and its many oddball characters and anyone who says different, well..."Did your mommy dress you for work today Mr. Business man? Your head looks too big...I will have to crush it!...I am crushing your head!...you flathead...!"
I mean, the worst moment of the film was the whole rock star thing, and the best was when the mom comes home and asks the kids where their father is..."oh, he's up in the attic masturbating to gay porn..." & the whole handcuff thing...
I wish they would have used some more of the classic TV skits or maybe just shown a bunch of episodes on the big screen...funniest skit ever...Kevin McDonald as a young, shy geeky suitor & Mark McKinney as the awkward tinsel-toothed (braces) teenage girl...they decide to have sex since her parents are gone and Kevin gets really nervous...Mark goes to "slip into something more comfortable" and when she comes back in "her" nightie, her big pet dog is humping Kevin in the rear while Kevin lays on the ground in shock...it is fan-fucking-tastic...I almost pissed myself the first time I saw it on my Kids In The HAll video of classic shows...The best part is that they hold the shot for a long time and I think the dog finished while Kevin layed there and let him...

Well, this movie was disappointing, and I'll admit I didn't laugh nearly as much as I thought I would, being a pretty big "Kids in the Hall" fan myself. But I did enjoy the movie quite a bit, even when the laughs didn't come. I enjoyed it for its weirdness and its absurd characters. It reminded me, just slightly, of some Monty Python's Flying Circus episodes which are no so much funny as just plain weird; so much so that you can't pull your eyes away.
Overall, "Brain Candy" is not the laugh riot I was hoping for or expecting, but a very entertaining movie nonetheless. I give it 7/10.
I guess we all kind of agree here then. Those crazy Canadians just couldn't pull this one off. One or two out-loud laughs and some chucks, but by the end I was disapointed. I almost never say I was disapointed with a film because I hardly ever go in with expectations. With this however, I love "Kids In The Hall," it's just that I've never seen these guys be un-funny until just recently when I watched this movie. It's really a waste of time. 3/10

I didn't think it was THAT godawful...I've definitely seen worse. Yeah, compared to the show, this movie wasn't that great, but hey, at least they tried. I have a feeling that studio intervention tamed a lot of what they had planned originally for this movie.
