Okay, when I first heard about this movie, I was totally pumped mostly because Jack Black was going to be in it. Then when I figured out that Steve Zahn (Happy, Texas, great movie, go see it if you haven't) was in it, I figured it couldn't go wrong. Since it was from the makers of Big Daddy (not Sandler's best, but at least more respectable than Little Nicky), I figured I'd be totally set for a good ride.

Well, after the opening weekend reviews, even with that of the Dude himself, JoBlo, the reviews turned out to be...less than perfect...a lot less.

"The movie drags down everyone involved, regardless of their apparent talent."
-- Mark Caro, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"The kind of comedy that takes the fun out of stupidity."
-- Jay Carr, BOSTON GLOBE

"Really stinks. No, really. It's bad. Awful."
-- Desson Howe, WASHINGTON POST

"'Saving Silverman' is so bad in so many different ways that perhaps you should see it, as an example of the lowest slopes of the bell-shaped curve. This is the kind of movie that gives even its defenders fits of desperation."
-- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

I'll also have you note that the last critic gave a rating of 1/2 *.

Can someone please save this movie's dignity for me? Or at least give me something to look forward to since I know I'm going to see it anyway?

Do that voodoo that you do so well.

First of all...great topic title!

Second of all, I think that you should read a couple of the posts on the Schmoes Board under my review of SAVING SILVERMAN, where most people seemed to have enjoyed the flick.
/savingsilverman.htm

They aren't necessarily MAJOR champions of the film, but they certainly seemed to have frivolously enjoyed it some.

Also, I think that if you don't go in with any expectations of it being a great film or anything, it could easily offer you some decent laughs. Especially if you dig on Jack Black and Steve Zahn, who've got some might sweet moments in the movie.

I can't really say that it's a good movie, but it certainly ain't a big ol' mess like many of the other so-called "comedies" that've been coming out early this year.

Oh yeah, and one Net critic that I generally do agree with (but not much in this case), also dug it quite some:

Brother gave it three stars!!!

Just go see it, not all critics have hated it and I know a few people that have seen it and they said it was really good and funny. I want to see it too but haven't gotten to it yet. Plus, Amanda Peets in it, and she has the power to turn any bad movie good, except Body Shots, that was just plain bad. Anyway, I think you should see it, I normally will see a movie no matter what the critics say, we all have our own opinions...

Oh, like I said, I'll go see it just because of Jack Black and Steve Zahn. But alas, I haven't gotten around to it yet either. I was just surprised at the reviews and starting to get a tad discouraged. Thanks for the hope!

I say who cares what the critics say about it because it boils down to if you like it or not. I had a hard time understanding this at one time myself. I mean no matter how bad there judgment is some people liked "battlefield Earth". Poor, poor people.
