Well, its not as well reviewed as Memento, but its still been pretty well received nonetheless. It has been getting rave reviews across the Internet. Sure, People magazine ignorantly tanked it (I read their review and they gave NO reason as to why it received a bad review, all they told was it was a live-action version of Myst that only geeks will like, which pissed me off), but as many bad reviews there are, there are 40 times more good reviews.
I just went over to imdb.com, and I was amazed at the 9.7/10 it receive from all the voters.
People Magazine is garbage. Myst? WTF!?
Any magazine that glorifies beauty more than personality like People are dumb and all they do is bash the morale of "ugly" girls b/c they cant be as pretty as Julia Roberts.
People Magazine is one of those magazines that want to be cool and it must be cool to bash LOTR b/c it spurred hits like D&D and Magic: The Gathering and they have a "geek" following. Please.

A little incoherent, but true nonetheless. I think People just wanted to gain some attention, and I think this because they had a lack of - wait, NO reasons (that they gave) for not liking this film. And actually, Fellowship of the Ring IS the best reviewed film of the year, in terms of number of reviews, and number of reviews that are positive.

You really can't go by that. Most of those voters are from LOTR fanboys who gave it a 10 because it's, well, LOTR. Once the general public sees it, then we will know the true LOTR average. Which will be much lower than that. The Godfather is #1 and has a solid 9.0. So until it's been released for a few weeks don't take that average seriously.

IMDB takes the amount of votes into consideration and that's why FOTR is at #53, despite the 9,7 average. It will go highger once the amount of votes grows bigger, but the average will go smaller at the same time. It's still gonna end up with at least 8.5.
Just for a note, the three reviews so far that have given FOTR a negative grade have been from little-known critics lacking in credibility. Just go and check their other reviews, they tend to be pretty incoherent.
The only "important" negative review so far has been from People Magazine, which basicly said that the film has many things to admire, but the critic considered himself too cool to openly like fantasy. The "review" didn't say even one single negative thing about the film (and noted several positive aspects), but still stated that it fails to enchant. Why? The review didn't bothered to answer, but apparently it was the fantasy aspect that turned him off.

A reviewer here in Pittsburgh gave it 3 out of 4 stars, but was also taking the stance that it was too much fantasy. He also complained that there was use of Elvish in the films because some little kids would be too young to read subtitles.
Some of these nitpicks are really quite comical.

Yes, Tukkaka, it is a little unreliable to judge the 9.7 rating now, because of those (us) Lord of the Rings fanboys, but in the same sense; look at the number of negative reviews - they are mostly ones; which leads me to believe that naysayers, and Star Wars fanboys, without actually seeing the movie, gave it a 1 so that the film would not take a spot above their precious trilogy. I think that once the film has been out a few weeks, that the average will drop, but not to 8.5 - that is too low - im thinking it will end up a little higher, or just below the Godfather, with a 8.9 or such. Just my thoughts though, I could be wrong. ....and yes, the negative comments on this film, for the most part, are fairly ridiculous.

Hey I loved Star Wars but I am not above giving a movie it's due when it rocks.
And LOTR rocked!! Much better than EPI.
I think PJ is about to wrest the mantle from Lucas and I say more power to him if he keeps pumping out movies like LOTR!!
Out.......

i can just forsee George Lucas saying he thought the movie was bad and "borrowing" several shots from LOTR for use in his upcoming SW movies

Too fantasy? This guy has heard of "The Lord of the Rings" before, right? You know, the single definitive fantasy novel of the last century, that "Lord of the Rings"?
Honestly, it's fine if you don't like the movie, but please make you criticism coherent. Otherwise, you come off like an ass.

LOTR totally kicked ass!!!!!! It was by far the best movie I've seen to date... Let's see if anyone (maybe Lucas) can top it...
