A Walk To Remember (spoilers... kinda)

I have a question for any of the movie lords who know more about this movie than me.

I just read the book 'A Walk To Remember' which the movie is obviously based on because of the picture of Shane and Mandy on the cover.
Now, before I read it, I thought that this movie would be just a cute little teenage love story about a misunderstood girls falling for a bad boy.

This is where the spoilers may come in...

The book is about a love story which ends VERY sadly with the girl (Mandy Moore) getting Lukimia and dying at the end.
So I'm just wondering about how much the movie follows the book because even from the trailor I can see a lot of differences.

I don't know about how faithful the film is, but the girl gets a disease and dies at the end? That seems like every other non-comedy romantic movie ever made! It must be effective though, and not too sappy.
