Has anybody seen the 9th Gate with Johnny Depp? I have nothing against him at all, as a matter of fact he did an excellent job in Sleepy Hollow-- But this movie SUCKED... I rented it this weekend, what kind of ending was that? I didn't even understand it..... (even though that sucked too...) Can anybody please explain the ending to me? (I feel the need to punish myself... but I have to know!)
Since we have been discussing this, I have changed my mind, maybe the ending wasn't so bad... It has had me thinking ever since..

I thought the ending was very simple. In the end Depp's character finally has all the nine pages, the keys to the ninth gate. In the final picture of the film we see him going to the castle. Why? To summon the devil, of course! To get all the wealth and power he thinks he will get. After all Depp's character in the film was never a clean-cut hero. He was a fucked up, selfish person. What he went to do in the end was perfectly logical in the context of the film.

But in the end... is he going to resurrect the devil... The woman in the picture is the harlot in the Book of Revelations... so was his getting the 9th gate open in fact the beginging of Armageddon?

I don't know. I think that the Depp's character simply thought he would get wealth and power from the Satan. That's what all the others in the film thought as well.

I think the ending was fascinating. I kept on thinking about it after I had seen the film. What happened to the main character and to the world in general afterwards? It might well have been the beginning of the armageddon, but then again, maybe not.

I don't even know who the woman was. She was brobably a witch of some sort. A real witch with supernatural powers (there are two short shots in the film where we see her flying through the air in the background). I got the feeling that she was a servant of Satan and she felt that Depp was the right person to open the gate. Maybe she knew that the devil would like him...

In the Book of Revelations, it talks about a harlot who would come on a 6 or was it 9 headed monster, and I know I saw her sitting on one on the 9th page... But I guess in this aspect the movie wasn't totally sucky, because it is making me think.

The Ninth Gate is based on the novel El Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte. You know the book is always better than the movie.

I rented this movie this past weekend ass well. However, it didn't hold my attention so I stopped it. I was going to finish it today, but my mother returned it. Oh well! I wasn't too impressed anyway.
