I think that in the year 2006, they should make a sequel to my all time favorite movie, "Taxi Driver."

It would be a great way for today's youth to get filmier with this classic tale.

It would be very interesting to see 2006 NYC through the eyes of a much older and wiser Travis Bickle. And they should defiantly touch all the sensitive and political issues. I.E...The WTC attack, racism, and whatever else is going on in the year 2006.
And other stuff that may stir up shit so that way it will get some spotlight.

I doubt it would be as successful as the first one, but still...I'd like to see them do it.

What about everyone else?

I admit it would be interesting to see what happened to Travis after 30 years, but it seems like blasphemy to even think of doing a sequel to this classic.

Plus it would undercut the ambiguity of whether or not the guy actually survived the original, was that last part just a dream? Some questions are best left unanswered.

I used to think the same until I actually saw an interview with Robert De Niro in which he mentioned that he'd actually thought about it himself. I thought he was nuts for saying it, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that if all of the original collaborators got back together...it might make for yet another interesting study. But who knows...generally I'm against these types of things, so I'd rather they didn't do it...in case they fucked it up and took away from the original (like those damn CROW sequels did to the first...)

Yes indeed, Bobby De Niro has talked about making a part 2 to Taxi Driver, in a modern day setting. And if you ask me, it's worth taking the risk. I doubt it would be as great as the first one, but I'd still be curious to see what a old and wise Travis Bickle would be all about.

What ifs.....remakes.....updates....it never ever works. THere have been a few FEW excellent sequels and send-ups, but the remake just doesn't fly. Great cinema is a result of a bunch of factors coming together, most often by chance, at a certain place and time. The finished product is then released in a certain place and time. New York was much different than it is now. Apart from freak terrorist attacks, the city is much much safer and cleaner (not that there isn't crime).
The original film was about a loner, a study of alienation that builds to a climax where the violence - the "something" that travis has to do - seems to tide him over for the time being. the last "stinger" where he thinks he sees something in the rear view indicates he might lash out again in time. after all, he was made into a rogue hero by the media. What would DeNiro find himself doing now? well he could 1- end up going on another vigilante spree, but that just smells like stinky sequel "he goes crazy again" and would come off like the many 2nd rate anti-hero vigilanted movies that followed in Taxi Driver's wake (although I thought "Falling Down" was decent. it owed everything to "taxi driver" though, and shraber's (sp?) script.
or 2- he could sit around drinking coffee, going off about "terrorism" or "multiculturalism" or "grunge" or "cell phones" or even poopy updates of classic hollywood cinema that are just out to make a quick fortune the first weekend. hype. of course, travis only watches dirty films, so he might not be of much help there.
so, if you want an "update" on this classic 70s cinema/the best film scorcese has made, maybe rent Falling Down? it reacts to early 90s california. it might be the closest you'll come.

Okay okay, I admit that part of me actively wants to see it happen!

Any word on what Scorsese thinks of this?
