View Full Version : Have you ever really felt sorry for a horror movie victim?
I mean just felt really bad for 'em cuz they're just in a totally helpless situation and you know they're going to die.
If Scream had been a more serious film I probably would have really felt bad for Rose McGowan's character. Being stuck in that garage door like that, seeing death coming, legs kicking to no avail. That's gotta ruin your day.
And the chick who gets the drawn & quartered treatment in The Hitcher. She must've been pissing her pants! I was a kid when I saw that the first time, felt bad for her too.
Anyone else...

No modern day horror films have inspired sympathy for the victim in me. The only one that stands out always is:
Janet Leigh In Psycho, that was a horror movie death I love, but Hitchcock made me feel sympathetic for one of the biggest stars of her time.

I know it's pretty much a comedy, but when REGGIE'S GRANDAD is thrown through that window with his eyes gouged out in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 5, i wasn't laughing! I felt so sorry for him - and seeing as thought JASON wasn't the killer, it was a 'real' person, that made it worse. Why did he have to do that?!
!MorganOnyx!

Oh, and BECKY (TANYA ROBERTS) in TOURIST TRAP. That was one cold, cold death. She so didn't have to die - she was 1 million times hotter than the other hoes and not annoying!

...no..... i dont feel bad for any victims in HORROR films... they r supposed to die... thats the fun of them, i think
Although it's not horror, in Sudden Impact
where that girl and her father had no place
to go and they had their last embrace before
that 999,999,900,000,000 gallon tidal wave
wiped them into oblivion. And this one IS a
horror film,(dealt with a rabid fox infecting
lots of pets)they had to put down a lot of
these animals for rabies. One was a black dog
and was a good effect for a head shot, looked
real, BUT the one was a whining shepard that
got a side shot. It wasn't the whining, just
the dog's look. I dunno, it's just something
about those shepards that have that sad look
in their eyes. A movie PERSON was from the
movie Volcano, where what's his name threw
that subway conductor to save him by jumping
into the lava as he threw him. Doesn't hit me
like a ton of bricks, but sad nonetheless.

Spoilers( highlight) Movies spoiled- Dawn of the Dead original, Night of the Living Dead 90, Dawn of the Dead 04, Quarantine, King Kong 70s version
Roger in DOTD- broke me up something fierce when i saw that the first time, and still does.
Steven from DOTD- totally unexpected, heart wrenching, probably even more depressing than Roger's fate.
Ben from Night 90- One of the greatest horror movie protagonists ever. You were on his side from the moment he rolled onto the scene and wanted him to survive.
CJ from DOTD 04- the guy was a prick but turned out to be one badass zombie killing lovable "good o'l boy" that you could easily identify with and root for. He risked his life for the greater good. I was in a deep dark depression after i witnessed his fate.
Kenneth from DOTD 04- this was a case of loving a character from the moment he appears. He kept the group grounded and stable and risked his life when necessary. He was the compassionate core to the group. Hated to see his fate.
Jake from Quarantine- he did all he could to protect the innocent even in a situation that appeared hopeless and he tore some shiite up something fierce before succumbing to the outbreak in shocking fashion. I wanted to see this guy survive, he deserved it.
King Kong in the 70s version- I don't care what anyone says, there is something about someone in a suit that makes you identify with a character more than cgi or stop motion. When that big fella was getting riddled with machine gun fire on the top of the Twin Towers, i was simultaneously enraged, saddened and heartbroken. It's still probably the most shocking demises of a character i was rooting for in any film i have ever seen. It's the height of tragedy.

You know, as much as I thought that movie was crud, I agree. Darn.
Also:
While the film itself wasn't strictly horror, I felt quite depressed that Newt and Hicks died in the shuttle pod crash in 'Alien 3' despite getting to know them so well in 'Aliens'. Fuck you David Fincher. :(

You know I agree with you about Alien 3. That REALLY sucked, becuase it totally subverted the ending of the previous film. The survivor didn't really survive! often in movies, if they want to write someone out of the show, they kill them off, and that is so stupid, because there are so many other ways they could do it. They could I would think, bring those characters back if they wanted--they HAD to with Ripley, remember?

Me too. I hated that scene in American Psycho and I am Legend always brings tears to my eyes, I sometimes fast foward that part.
Also like to add Shaun from SotD because of his mom. Same goes for the father and daughter in Dawn of the Dead remake. And of course, the end of The Mist......now what that man endured........damn!

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Nancy (Heather Langenkamp)
This is the first one to come to mind. When Patrica Arquette's character held her after and said "I'll dream you a beautiful dream" I got moisty eyed :(
Usually I don't feel that bad for them because in most horror movies, you know what to expect so you don't get attached to the characters. In the case of Nancy, we got to know her in two films before she met her death so there was much more of an impact.

I know, I know, this character is not from a movie, but even as a videogame character, I felt sorry for Lisa Trevor. If any of you RE fans have read her file, she really does have a quite a tragic back story, and given what she looks like in the game as a result really does make you feel for her.
Despite the fact she is perhaps one of the toughest bosses in the game who just... won't... DIE.:p

I remember being younger and seeing Day Of The Dead (I think that was the movie) on, and this guy who was probably some nothing horrible character, being cornered in a room with a huge line of zombies coming towards him. All the death scenes were pretty brutal, so I knew what was going to happen to him, and I just kept cheering for him to shoot himself in the head.
Oh, and Randy dying in Scream 2. It pissed me off.

Yep. There's actually been several films in the last few years that just made me want to walk in front of a bus after watching them. I don't want to completely spoil them since they're still newish, but those that have seen them will know which characters I'm talking about in Eden Lake, Ils, Strangers, Frontieres, and Funny Games if you want to count that.

For that gormless twit, Kevin (played by Chris Pitt) the boy scout in "Lair of the White Worm." You knew he was overmatched as soon as he got into Lady Sylvia Marsh's (Amanda Donohoe's) Jaq XKE, but still, he deserved a better fate than what happened to him in the film.
