View Full Version : How many deaths in a movie would be too much?
I've seen a lot of horror films with a lot
of killings. How many death counts would you
think is too much?

IF THEY WERE ULTRA GOREY, LIKE NEY YORK RIPPER, THEN OVER 13 WOULD BE TO MUCH.
BUT IF THEY WEREN'T VIOLENT AT ALL, LIKE FINAL EXAM, OVER 25 WOULD BE TOO MUCH.
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 5, HAS ALOT OF DEATHS IN, ABOUT 21, AND THEY ARE A MIXTURE OF NOT GOREY AT ALL, STAB IN STOMACH, BUT ONLY SEEING VICTIMS FACE, TO QUITE GRAPHIC, SOMEONE HAVING A KNIFE SHOVED THROUGH THEM, FROM UNDER A BED.
IN THAT SORT OF FILM YOU COULD HAVE AS MANY AS YOU WANTED, AS LONG AS THEY CHANGED STYLE, WITH EACH SCENE...

id have to say like in dawn of the dead their were too many kills it was starting to get corny in my view
I just thought of it. Hellraiser 3 had almost
100 killings, and over 15 were gory. The plot
wasn't as good as the other two, but it does
NOT suck like part 5. Almost had NOTHING to
do with what the box was. I've heard there
was a "B" movie(don't know the name)out there
that had like 40 super gory, violent killings
and was banned, IN EUROPE! Must've been real
sick if EUROPE bans a film!

Tom europe bans films much more frequently then the USA or Canada. And I personally like Hellraiser 3 I thought it was the coolest (not best) of the series from 1-4

Fewer deaths in a movie usually means the better and scarier it is (Jaws, Psycho). Any REALLY scary movie shouldn't have more than four or five. I'm not saying I don't like movies with high body counts like "The Terminator". But for a HORROR movie less is really better.

If the movie is just killing people off for gore and bloodiness and has no story it might be too much. But if the movie has plot and doesnt just kill people off for gore there shouldn't be any limit......

I would pass up a high body count if it meant ultra-gory violence (Hannibal was nice enough to comply). Starship Troopers went even farther as having both a high body count and massive gore and I particulary liked that movie. Body counts don't make a good horror movie if the deaths are taken so lightly. Killings left and right can make it monotnous and not nearly as interesting as say, a killer tearing someone's throat out. That will get your attention.

Depends on how skillfully and stylishly the film can pull it off. If a film can pull off 50 murders stylishly enough to keep me from getting bored, then it hasn't exceeded the limit.
It's all in the presentation.
Rocky-You obviously didn't understand Dawn. It wasn't just zombies rippin ppl apart, it was a symbol of a lower class rebellion. The ppl in the mall were the upper class. The bikers were the middle class and they made way for the lower class (zombies) to take over.
The lower class then killed and ate the middle and upper class and could never use the things that the upper class had used. Don't just see the violence, see the meaning next time.

Very insightful answer about Dawn Skaboy18, I've been waiting to answer but couldn't think of the words...
Back to the subject of deaths...
I'd say it depends on what movie your watching, and if they're seen on screen at the time. If your watching a Halloween movie, and Myers kills 50,60 people on screen with lots of blood and gore, i doubt that will get past the censors... then again there is hannibal... but anyway, zombie films have much higher death counts, and accepted more because of the genre. Those are just my senseless drabblings thou...

I would like to say that there can never be too many deaths but I guess it really just depends on which movie I'm watching. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

It depends on how they die. If you drop a bomb on a schoolbus, you can kill 40 teens at once, but if you stab them one by one, it gets boring.

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TO MUCH DAMN IT!!!!
For a slasher movie I think you need to have at least 12 kills going for you, I tend to find movies with bodycounts such at 7 or 8 tend to drag a bit unless they are short (Yes even Scream). That's the main reason I love Sleepaway Camp 2 so much, it's just 80 minutes of people getting killed and manages to rack up an impressive 19 kills :D

There is a stage in a movie with too many killings where I start to get bored and I start saying 'Oh look, there's ANOTHER death...Woo-Hoo!'.

Too many deaths is never an issue as long as the victims are well-developed characters. We don't even hafta particularly like them as long as they have SOME sense of realism.
Im a size queen....I love a movie with a high body count. In fact I tend to get bored and dislike movies with a potentially high body count and then leaves half the cast unharmed! Also I would like to add that watching a jar of Mayo for an hour would be great as long as in the last 30 minutes its an all out bloodbath!!!

Well, I think if it's one kill after another, and no plot, or character development...then thats way too much.
I think that as long as there is plot and character development...the movie cant have too many deaths.

It all depends on how the kills are done. If each kill is somewhat different and if it adds something to the film, then there can never be too many. However, some films go way overboard, i.e. Dawn of the Dead. If you string Halloween 1 and Halloween 2 together (since it happened in the same night) he killed a shitload of people, but it fit the films very well.:D
