What do y'all think is the most effective opening death scene (the first death you see on screen)and why? For example, DREW BARRYMORE getting killed at the start of SCREAM - it was handled with such style, was extremely scary, and the film makers tricked us by making us think she would live by promoting her as one of the main characters - so the shock value was high as well. It really set the tone for the rest of the movie - the actual stabbing sequence was so savage because it seemed so very real. As soon as i saw this i knew the movie was gonna rock!
What do y'all think?

I'd say the beginning of WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, Although the main character doesn't die, the children do. The whole first 15 or so minutes are set up perfectly. Very suspenseful. If only the rest of the movie didn't suck /ubb/frown.gif . "Have you checked the children..."

I persoanlly dont think that you can beat the DREW BARRYMORE death in scream simply because she was the expected star and she was dead after 15 minutes! The way it is parodied in SCARY MOVIE is also great!!!!
This is so easy. Hands down Drew Barrymore in SCREAM, it was handled with such class and the first time you see it you can't help but have an uneasy stomach, I know I did. I was glued to the screen. I doubt any movie will beat this, it's classic...

Does anybody remember Chrissie's death at the beginning of JAWS?
Creepy stuff....
NO WAY, guys! The opening scene in the "B"
film, Suspiria! The scenes that led up to the
murder were VERY suspensful, very effective,
not to mention CREEPY background music, and
that girl was visually ripped to shreds. I'm
surprised the film didn't have more murders
that graphic in the film, but the film itself
had a strong character devolopment, which is
unusual for "B" slasher films. Indeed, a very
well thought out production but the ending is
a little cheesy, but overall, it was a very
good film.

Definitely Drew Barrymore's murder in SCREAM. Borrowing from such classics as BLACK CHRISTMAS and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, screenwriter Kevin Williamson set the tone for the rest of the film with this classic opening, which, like its excellent predecessors PSYCHO and HALLOWEEN, spawned a countless number of imitators.

Jaws, without a doubt...that would be a HORRIBLE way to go. I don't think I will ever swim in the ocean.

Good call guys! Thinking about it, the opening death in JAWS was great. I'd say it gave the movie the perfect atmosphere. It was handled really well and scared the shit out of me. That movie could make you scared in the theater/living room even though you are nowhere near any water. That must mean it's seriously suspenseful - i think you put yourself in the characters position and realise, that shark attacks do happen, and how awful it must be if it happened to you!!!

i think "manhunter"with the whole hotel scene in the dark and when the girl gets up from bed because of the flashlight you knew something bad was gonna happen.

The opening to Scream made me laugh out loud (I hate Drew), but I did not really care for the scene in general.
I think the opening in Jaws is by far the best opening scene deaths and maybe one of the best death scenes of all-time. It is just so frickin awful. Very nasty.
I also liked when Barbara's bro got killed in the beginning of NOTLD. That was classic.
I know everyone has their own opinion but how could you hate Drew Barrymore. I love her, I think she rocks and was perfect in the beginning of SCREAM... But that's just my opinion...

No doubt it would be Drew in Scream
but i like the opening scene in THE FACULTY when that guy from Xfiles turns into that Alien chasing Bebe Newworth. Then she thinks she's all safe with that sweet lady, when she really isn't.
