Oh Femme Fatale, David Cronenberg is one of my favourite horror/sci Fi Directors. Much like John Carpenter he has consistently made the films he wants too with his unique style stamped all over it.
From The Brood & Scanners all the way to The Fly & Existenz, I love em all. To choose one is so hard when everyone film is so unique & different.

I have to say I have watched Existenz way to many times since it was released, also tend to watch The Fly & Scanners a fair bit.

I cant choose a fave but I will say great topic Femme Fatale. Cronenberg Rules.

I loved Dead Ringers. I think that's Cronenberg's very best. It is also Jeremy Iron's best performance to date. I think the Academy gave him the Oscar for Reversal of Fortune more because of his acting in this film.

I love Cronenberg, I think Rabid, Dead Ringers, Videodrome, Scanners and Crash are my favorites. I still love everything else the man has done. I even own a copy of M. Butterfly, I think it is excellent.

Deckard said it all. Cronenberg is my favorite horror director. The only movies he's made that have disappointed were "Crash" (the first hour was intriguing, but it just sort of seems to peter out afterward) and "Naked Lunch" (only because this movie needed CGI).

I'm with you, Femme, I think "The Brood" is one of his greatest. My favorite Cronenberg is "The Fly."

THE BEST OF DIRECTOR DAVID CRONENBERG
1. Crash (1996) My grade: A (NC-17 version only!)
2. The Dead Zone (1983) B+
3. Dead Ringers (1988) B
4. The Fly (1986) B

Much like David Lynch, Cronenberg is an acquired taste. His movies are intended to amuse only himself, although at least when you're watching one of his flicks, you KNOW you're gonna see something interesting and/or different.

I have yet to locate THE BROOD at any of my local video stores. The horror website TERROR TRAP rates it as one of the scariest films ever. I've seen clips from it on TERROR IN THE AISLES, and it looks pretty freaky. Anyone know where I can purchase it via the Internet?

I found my copy of "The Brood" on eBay. It's been out of print in the US for years.

By the way Antonio, what did you like so much about "Crash"? As I said, the first hour is riveting, but after that, it seemed to just transform into a soft-core porn movie for wound fetishists. In other words, it just seemed like all story and character development ceased. (I did, by the way, see the unrated version). Did I miss something?

I just thought it was a sexy, bold, daring movie from the usually off-kilter Cronenberg. Yeah, it might have appealed to my pornographic and voyeuristic needs, but I have NEVER seen anything like it. From James Spader having sex with Rosanna Arquette's wounds to the re-creations of the accidents that killed Jayne Mansfield and James Dean. Highly original. The R-rated version cut out some of the sex scenes, not the gore. Sex is what this flick was about (or sexual fetishes), and the more, the merrier!

Plus, I thought it was daring for Oscar-winner Holly Hunter to follow up her role in THE PIANO with another sexually dysfunctional character.

"Dead Ringers" & "The Dead Zone" are the best of the best... in the horror genre that is. I mean nothing beats drug-abusing, gynecologist twins who invent new gynecological devices for mutant vaginas and it's tough to top an aspecially spaced-out Christopher Walken as a teacher gone sniper... /ubb/wink.gif Good points about "The Brood"...

I'm a pretty stalwart cinephile, but "Dead Ringers" is one of those rare movies that is actually able to make me nauseous. Don't get me wrong, it's one of C's strongest works. But all the blood and guts in the world are nothing compared to the sense of despair and awfulness this movie delivers.

And thanks for the low-down, Antonio. I'll most definitely give "Crash" another look. (I'll end up getting it if for no other reason than to complete my Cronenberg collection.) Maybe I'll have a change of heart. [crosses fingers]

I'm amazed no one has mentioned Shivers yet. You wanna talk about weird sexual fetishes and obsession and violence and an intelligent meaning - this film has it all. Fantastic movie, even if it's a little amatuerish. Incidentally, this was the only Cronenberg film a horror documentary on the IFC went over. I wish I could remember the title, because it was a really good documentary.
