THE BEST CLIFFHANGERS IN HORROR

CLASSIC ENDINGS: Michael Myers' vanishing act in HALLOWEEN; Jason jumping out of the murky waters of Camp Crystal Lake and attacking Alice (Adrienne King) in FRIDAY THE 13TH.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: The spider web trap in KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS; the cop wrongly suspecting Melissa Sue Anderson of murder in HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME; Donald Sutherland screaming at Veronica Cartwright in INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS; Billy Wirth and Gabrielle Anwar landing their helicopter in the midst of danger in BODY SNATCHERS.

HYSTERICAL HAPPENINGS: How did Michelle Pfeiffer become a WOLF?; How did Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) return from hell at the end of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and attack Marge Thompson (Ronee Blakley)?; How did The Vampire LeStat (Tom Cruise) regain his youth (and strength) to attack Christian Slater in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE?

ALTERED PERSONALITIES: Paula Sheppard "takes over" in ALICE, SWEET ALICE; Helen Shaver "does the right thing" in THE BELIEVERS; THE BIRDS "allow" Tippi Hedren and Co. to escape; Dee Wallace catches werewolf fever in THE HOWLING; Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) reverts to his "old ways" in PSYCHO II.

BEST SET-UP FOR A SEQUEL: The Paris catastrophe in FINAL DESTINATION; the apocalyptic preacher and his BLOB on ice in the 1988 version; little Jake's ability to hear the whispers of "those who have gone before us" in STIR OF ECHOES.

THE DEAD DON'T REALLY DIE: The killers in BLACK CHRISTMAS and THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW.

WHAT THE FUCK?: Mike standing in the corner like a good little boy in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT; Jason jumping through the window and attacking Ginny (Amy Steel) in the finale of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, when Paul (John Furey) ended up M.I.A. instead; Ann-Margaret doesn't "catch on" to Anthony Hopkins' crazy ways in MAGIC; BABY JANE Hudson (Bette Davis) dancing on the beach while her sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) seemingly dies in the sand.

Ok,
I really love the cliffhanger in Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, I thought it was great. But it's to bad the third one won't have anything to do with part 2. In a way that's cool, but I guess we'll never know what happened to them in the second one and that kinda sucks. I kinda wouldn't mind knowing.
As for best set up for a sequel, I would have to go with MAN'S BEST FRIEND. Ok, I know I'll probably get shit for that because I don't know how many people liked it. I haven't seen it for a long time and I was pretty young when I saw it, I haven't seen it for a long time. But instead of wanting to see cartoons all the time I would have to get this whenever I went to the video store. It's the one with Ally Sheedy. Anyway, I remember I used to love it. I should rent it sometime soon because I wonder if I'd still like it, I probably would. Anyway, the ending set this one up for a sequel, with one of the puppies looking like Max (the killer dog). I always hoped they would make one, but I think I know what happened. I think the creators of the movie left it open for a sequel in case it made a lot of money, then they could hurry and make a sequel. Well, I'm guessing it must not have made much money, does anyone know how much it made? Otherwise we would've already seen a sequel. Too bad, I loved this movie... I'm sure most of you guys probably think it's stupid and corney, and you're probably right, but I enjoyed it. Am I the only one?

Anyway Antonio,
I think that the reason why Michelle Pfeiffer was a werewolf in the end of WOLF was because Jack Nicholson was in love with her and he was one. I haven't seen it for a while but I always thought that was why. I thought that if he loved her enough she would turn into one too, didn't they mention that somewhere in the movie. If they didn't then it must've happened the good old fashioned way, she must have been bit but we didn't see it happen. Who knows I'm probably wrong.
Anyway, there's other but I can't think of them now. Oh wait, the first I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER movie, that was a pretty good set up for a sequel...

PEACE

CLASSIC ENDINGS:
Yeah baby! I'll never forget when i first saw HALLOWEEN. I was so creeped out by that ending - it is one of, if not THE best ending of the genre.

BEST SET UP FOR A SEQUEL:
You are SO right. I've read on these pages that a lot of people thought the ending to FINAL DESTINATION was crap/a cop out. I thought it rocked! I can't see where they would take the sequel though. Apart from a few decent deaths i'm sure they could dream up, the story will probably suck! STIR OF ECHOES - good point!

HYSTERICAL HAPPENINGS:
Have you ever seen INTRUDER (1988) It's got SAM RAIMI in? The ending to that is fucking funny!!!!!

The BLAIR WITCH PROJECT ending was a 'what the fuck?' that scared the shit out of me!!! I wasn't impressed with the film, but i love that ending - freaky shit!

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2:
Yeah man, i was so confused by that ending for years, until i found out that JOHN FUREY quit on the last day of filming - that cleared a few things up. I just find it funny now! "Paul, where are you?"

P.S. I STILL can't find BLACK CHRISTMAS - I am dying to see that movie!

MIKE - If you watch MAN'S BETS FRIEND now you'll probably be disapointed to see that it BITES - ha, get it?!

ANTONIO -
I actually thought that CLOWNHOUSE had a neat little ending. That whole 'man can never run from his fear, as it is part of him, it will always know where he is hiding' is really cool!

no question halloweenI has the best cliffhanger. when michael dissapeared i couldn't wait till i saw the next one in fact i was so excited to see what was gonna happen until it finally came out.

Mike

Morgan,
I agree, I probably would think Man's Best Friend was corney if I watched it now. But I liked it then, that was before I got taste. I was too young to even make fun of movies then. I wouldn't even know what corney meant. But now I do and I don't know if I'd like it as much as I did then...
Also, I too liked the ending to Final Destination, I was afraid to say that before because a lot of people didn't like the ending. But now that I realize that I'm not the only one, I may as well admit it. I don't know about the sequel, I will definately see it but I doubt it will be as good as the first one, it still might be alright though... I'll give it a try... Also, the Stir Of Echoes ending was pretty cool too, kinda creepy.
I've also been looking for Black Christmas and I haven't been able to find it at a video store, if I ever run across it I'll rent it. There's a couple movies I saw at the video store and I wanted to know if anyones seen them because I don't know if they're good or not. They are Ghosthouse and Funhouse, Ghosthouse is about a ghost and a killer doll or something like that. I don't know what Funhouse is about but it has a clown or something on the cover... Anyone seen either of them??? Are they good???

MIKE -
If i remember rightly it was you i was describing GHOSTHOUSE to. YES! It is DEFINATELY worth renting - it's seriously spooky shit! Check out the weird nursery rhyme that plays on the main dudes CB radio.

Mike - Yes, the ending to "Final Destination" was perfect, even though it set things up for a sequel. It's a lot better than the original ending, where Devon Sawa dies, Ali Larter gives birth to his kid, and that Carter a-hole lives. Thank God for re-writes...

Good cliffhangers: "Halloween", "Blair Witch" (not the still-cruddy sequel), "Black Christmas", "The Fog", "The Hitcher" (you never know, C. Thomas Howell might just take Rutger's place)

Bad: "The Ninth Gate" (talk about your WTF endings), "Hellraiser 4" (Pinhead's destroyed forever, yet there's ANOTHER "Hellraiser" with him in it), "Hellraiser 3", "Hellraiser 2", "Hellraiser" (good flick, but the ending set itself up for too many bad sequels), "Omen 4" (you've seen one, you've seen em all; "Final Conflict" should have been the last)

Morgan,
that's right you did describe Ghosthouse to me but I had forgotten, sorry. It sounds good, I think I'll have to rent it sometime... Adam, I am so glad that they ended Final Destination the way they did instead of the other ending you described. That would've been pretty bad...

Yeah, the alternate "FD" ending is on the DVD. In fact, they deleted a whole subplot about Ali Larter making out with Devon Sawa and getting pregnant from the results. James Wong took no prisoners when he edited the film; as it is, it's one of the year's best.

I remember seeing Halloween 4 in the theatres and when that ending happened, with the classic score kicking in...I got goosebumps. I also had my "WHAT THE FUCK???" face on.

I remember the ending of H4 marking me.

Another ending that rocked my world was the cap off to Seven. Holy shite! I was glued to my chair even after the credits stopped rolling. Harsh!

PASSING THE TORCH: Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) picks up where CANDYMAN (Tony Todd) left off, and slaughters her grieving husband (Xander Berkley) after he unwittingly cries out her name five times in front of his bathroom mirror; Little Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) takes the reins of the "family business"...and stabs her stepmother after being traumatized by her Uncle Michael in HALLOWEEN 4.

If you were watching Blair Witch closely, you would have remembered one of the people that were interviewed who said something about the Blair Witch standing one person in the corner and forcing them to watch the other one get slaughtered. Weirdass endings? One of my favorite endings ever was the end of Jason Goes To Hell, when Freddy's hand comes up and takes the mask. And, believe it or not, I really enjoyed JGTH more than most of the other Friday movies. F13 is probably my least favorite of all the long-running series I've seen so far...

SPOILER FOR BLACK CHRISTMAS AHEAD - THAT MEANS YOU MORGAN, DON'T READ!

Antonio - what do you mean by "The Dead Really Don't Die" in Black Christmas? The boyfriend DID die. The killer, however, did not...you don't ever get to know who the killer is. Or that's the impression that I got.

Freddy is God

Allow me to explain the Hellraiser series: The 4th one ended with Pinhead and the box being destroyed for good, but wasn't that in the future? The 5th one takes place in the present. I don't know what year the 4th one takes place, but it's obviously a time after the 5th one takes place. By the way, Hellraiser: Bloodline sucks and was definitely the worst one.

I'll agree with ya there bry bry, the Halloween ending was kool, I mean Loomis pumps him with how many... 6 bullets & capaya, the crazy SOB is back up & chasin babysitters & teens!

To be more serious, it was an excellent ending to a movie, very powerful, eerie, when I first saw it I was like, oh damn its over! then Loomis looks down, oh god!!!! where it leads to, I personally think of it as one of the freakiest & eerie movies ever, Halloween 2, if ya havent seen it, rent it! if ya have seen it, see it again!

so not my longest essay, kinda showin my duel slasher side MWUHAHAHAHAHA

Okay, I just saw GHOSTHOUSE. And I have three words for all of you who liked it...WHAT THE FUCK?

Perhaps the worst acting this side of A CLOWN AT MIDNIGHT.

I know the ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger, but...WHAT THE FUCK?

I'm glad you've seen it. The acting is piss poor but i thought it was great. It had a weird vibe and that nursery rhyme scared me. I love the ending because the 'evil' wins. Endings that aren't all happy an shit are cool in my book.

I didn't like the Ghosthouse ending, but the rest of the film IMO was awesome. MY guilty pleasure would probably be the music playing when the grim reaper thing comes near the end. It's rock/type/metal music, and I'm NOT talking about the other rock music in this movie. Just the rock music in that particular scene.

That's my full name, utilized when I was Moderator...summer of 2001. Changed it when I became a regular Schmoe again, so I suspect they added Guest to my old posts. I thought my former self was a Senior Schmoe as well....

Mike Myers vanishing in Halloween with the music picking up HIGH in the back ground.

As the music picks up u hear him breathing as the camera does scatter shots of all the places he could be. The shape could be anywhere.

Coolest ending to a horror movie ive ever seen. Truly frightning and is the exact type of thing that made me love the genre as i do.
