Pardon me, but Craven is a genius! Look at all the great movies to his credit: Scream 1, 2, and 3, Nightmare on Elm Street 1 & 7, Last House On The Left, The People Under The Stairs, the list goes on...

My favorite right now is probably Tobe Hooper.

For me the most consistantly innovative and original director in the horror field is David Cronenberg. While he's hasn't done straight horror for awhile, he's never completely left the genre.

I'd pick Hitchcock, but he only directed two films that can actually be considered horror movies. I just think the ratio should be a little greater if someone is to be considered a "horror director."
