I don't know if this counts as a film, since it is only a part of a film collection, but the "Silent Night" part of the original "Tales From The Crypt" film is fuckin' great...I also really dig the update that Robert Zemeckis did for the TV series as well...It always fascinates me, because you have this warm, cozy home decked out in Christmas paraphenelia, and the seemingly warm, cozy wife who sticks a fire-poker into her husband's skull before being stalked by an escaped lunatic with an ax who is dressed like Santa Claus...and who finally gets in from the chilly, snowy outdoors because her child thinks he's Santa...It's such a classic story, that I watch it over and over again, while sitting in front of the fireplace, wearing my light blue cardigan, smoking my oakwood pipe, on the bearskin rug and sippin' warm Brandy from a hand-warmed snifter...

BLACK CHRISTMAS (1975) Directed by Bob Clark of "Porky's" fame. Predating both "Halloween" and "When A Stranger Calls", BLACK CHRISTMAS was one of the first horror flicks to feature a holiday-themed murder spree. The plot centers around a group of sorority sisters menaced by an obscene phone-caller, who subsequently murders them in stylishly gruesome manners. The top-notch, all-star cast includes: Olivia Hussey (a major babe) as the not-so-innocent heroine; Keir Dullea as her disturbed boyfriend; the great John Saxon as the detective on the case; Lynne Griffin and Andrea Martin as two of the sorority sisters; Art Hindle as Griffin's clueless boyfriend; and last, but certainly not least...Margot Kidder, who steals the show as the boozy, foul-mouthed Barb. This atmospheric fright fest contains excellent characterizations, and really packs a wallop in the suspense department. Scariest scene: the deranged killer staring at Hussey through a slightly ajar door! Also, the phone calls are genuinely creepy. John Carpenter originally planned to make "Halloween" as a sequel to this film, but obviously ventured out on his own. Simply the best "holiday horror" ever! My grade: A
