I read this in a recent science fiction magazine(I forget the name).
First, the bad news:
The guns which authorities hold at the film's climax will be CGI'ed out & replaced with walkie talkies.

Now, the good news:
When the E.T. DVD is released later this year, it'll have both the special & original versions of the film. Cameron did something similar with Terminator 2 on that DVD.
So, even if we dislike the changes Spielberg makes to his 1982 masterpiece, at least he won't be forcing them down our throats like Lucas did when he tampered with the Star Wars Trilogy.

We can only hope that Lucas will take a lesson from Cameron & Spielberg in this regard when the original trilogy comes to DVD.

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HAPPY I AM ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOO HOOOOO! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Spielberg has done something right by agreeing to have both versions on the dvd. I have seen it more than 20 times, probably more than 30 I don't know. And it is my favorite film of all time. I'm ecstatic, I need some water...

I personally do not see the big deal about the walkie talkie/gun conspiracy. On the 20 year VHS tape, the detail of the gun is too pixilated to determine (slight exaggeration). My main concern is that tge special edition DVD has the full remastering and the THX certification. If it can give DVD quality video and a good audio track, then I will be more than ecstatic.

there's another change on the movie that i think noone has mentioned...
there's a part were the kid's mom calls some kids "danm terrorists" in halloween, and it is going to be changed to "hippies."
Oh! and there's a new scene with ET on the bathtub! kinki!lOL!

I've heard about those other changes as well.
However, since Spielberg was smart enough to keep the original version around, he could CGI-out the Reese's Pieces & replace them with carrots & I wouldn't care.

That's a good idea to have both versions on the DVD. Good move.

I agree with you... but I have no problem with the chages though.
Oh! and I heard that they will correct ET's mouth with CGI, so the movements of the mouth make sense with what he's saying! I like that idea!

the only debateable choice I can think of is the removed line of "Penis Breathe!" it's true that's it's been takin' out, but that's what the original is for. a tidbit that is surprising is that the terrorist line was dubbed over for TV prints about 10 years ago after some event, but hasn't been noticed much
