ORIGINAL CASTING CHOICES FOR FAMOUS HORROR MOVIE ROLES
Sally Field as Alice in FRIDAY THE 13TH
Gene Hackman as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
Michelle Pfeiffer as Clarice Starling in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
Charles S. Dutton as Ronnie in H20
Meryl Streep as Lt. Ellen Ripley in ALIEN
Debra Winger as Alex Forrest in FATAL ATTRACTION
Leonardo DiCaprio as Patrick Bateman in AMERICAN PSYCHO
Sissy Spacek as Chris Hargensen in CARRIE
Christopher Lee as Dr. Sam Loomis in HALLOWEEN
Joan Crawford as Miriam Deering in HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE
Lana Turner as Marion Crane in PSYCHO
Piper Laurie as Marion Crane in PSYCHO
Shirley MacLaine as Chris MacNeil in THE EXORCIST
Robert Redford as Guy Woodhouse in ROSEMARY'S BABY
Jane Fonda as Rosemary Woodhouse in ROSEMARY'S BABY
Helen Hayes as Mrs. Bates in PSYCHO
Judith Anderson as Mrs. Bates in PSYCHO
Of all the afore-mentioned actors and actresses, I think that Field would have done the best job as Alice in FRIDAY THE 13TH (although I loved Adrienne King in the role). Too bad the role would probably have killed her career since the movie was poorly received by critics. Shirley MacLaine would have been excellent in THE EXORCIST, although we all love Ellen Burstyn. Ditto Christopher Lee in HALLOWEEN. Although he is one of the greats, no one can fill Donald Pleasence's shoes! Also, the role of Mrs. Bates in PSYCHO was never cast (since it was a publicity stunt concocted by Hitchcock to "throw off" the press concerning the film's final twist). The two casting choices that would have spelled major T-R-O-U-B-L-E were "DiCrapio" in AMERICAN PSYCHO and Streep (a glorified soap actress) in ALIEN. Thank God for misleading first impressions!
