Was Texas Chainsaw Massacre cannibal themed?

I definitely think Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cannibal themed, and handled the best. Whereas Silence of the Lambs flirted with the idea of cannibalism, it didn't show too much - the memories were strong enough on their own. But the scene in TCM where it is a closeup of the frying meat, after the girl has escaped from the house; now THAT was cannibalism-themed without smacking you over the head with it. Very suggestive. Very creepy. Very effective.

Just checking, so here's my list:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
(This movie literally grossed me out!!!!!!!)

I was pretty young when I watched Friday the 13th, so I believed the rumor that Jason's mom used the dead bodies for food in her shop/restaurant (it's been a long, long time since I have seen it) I wanted to know if there was any truth to it?

Interesting tidbit, DRAGON, concerning FRIDAY THE 13TH, although those themes of cannibalism weren't featured in the original film. The only two people who Mrs. Voohrees murdered besides the counselors during that fateful Friday the 13th were two counselors making love in the hayloft the year after Jason drowned (in 1958). She must have been a young woman back then, and if she did indeed run a gift shop/cafe, then those are the only two victims she could have fed to her patrons. The murder spree featured in the first FRIDAY was confined to a 24-hour period, which ended with her death. Don't think she served up Bill, Marcie and the others to the residents and tourists of Camp Crystal Lake. Interesting bit of trivia, though. Maybe that story was featured in the original screenplay.

ANTONIO, what did you see in GRANDMOTHERS HOUSE? I bought the DVD recently after reading some positive comments here about the movie being atmospheric and spooky, but after watching it I was thinking it couldn't be the same movie...The movie I saw was poorly acted, goofy, and not spooky in the least. Are we talking the Brinke Stevens movie here, or what?

Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.

BLAKE, yeah it was the same movie. I just saw something "extra" in it...be it style and interesting locations. Definitely no PSYCHO or HALLOWEEN, but it had its moments. Not on my purchase list, though.

Thought I'd mention a little oddity called TERROR AT THE RED WOLF INN. I wouldn't be surprised if most of you missed out on this minor gem, mainly 'cause the art on the packaging was so horrible...But take a chance on this cannibal flick if you run across it, and you might be pleasantly surprised. It's an original mish-mash of horror, black comedy, and gross out shocks, with some very strange romantic elements thrown in for spice. Somehow, with all these uneven elements, the movie is still nail bitingly suspenseful in parts, something I wasn't counting on at all after seeing that horrid video box...Very, very strange, the kind of movie that could've only been produced in the seventies. You want a grade, I'll give it a solid B.

Ive only seen a couple of cannibal movies (films about people eating other people really dont appeal to me!!!!) But the ones I have seen are really quite good-

Silence of the Lambs- I love this film, even though I can never sleep after I have watched it- not because it scares me, just because it makes me think...

Hannibal- I really liked this film when I first saw it, then I watched it again and Im not so sure- you surely have to brace yourself while watching certain bits of it, but the scenery is gorgeous, and I think Julianne Moore is incredible!! (i know im the only one who thinks that!)

Cannibal Ferox- I could only stomach this film because a) it was heavily cut and b) I was very drunk at the time!!! Its no masterpiece, the version I have seen (which allegedy has 10 minutes cut out of it) was pretty tame, but implied a lot. The charecters are quite effective, and the story is not boring, but in the end you just dont care!!!!!!

Texas Chainsaw Massacre- I got told last week: 'your the only girl Ive ever met who likes this film' I was quite proud of that!!!! Marilyn Burns is excellent, and Im suprised she didnt do more acting...

Anyone got any recommendations that I have just got to see??

Anyone want to suggest some more to me???

Not strictly horror but we must not forget Peter Brook's 1963 version of Lord of the Flies which is a classic.

If you are fond of this genre, definitely check out "Doctor Butcher, M.D."
I've seen it a few times, and I am always amazed at how authentic they made the flesh eating and vivisection scenes appear.Great gory stuff.
It centers around an archeological expedition from the big city travelling to a remote jungle community to investigate 'The Mark of Kito'.Well, once there, the hapless explorers are subject to any number of grotesque demises at the hands of cannibals and mutants. Some gruesome fucking death scenes ensue. For good measure, there is a little T&A thrown in, of the 'full frontal' variety.
All in all a bizarre, disgusting little flick that I happen to enjoy very much.

GREEN, it has been awhile since I've seen the original LORD OF THE FLIES. Were the kids in that film reduced to cannibalism to survive? I remember them killing and cooking the wild boar, but maybe I'm blocking out their flesh-feast.

You are probably right Antonio, I need a refresher on that movie as well. It has been a while. I know the boar was killed and roasted and two boys were killed, weather they were eaten or implied to be eaten I can't remember. Although I saw the 1990 version a while back which is laughable.

did anybody see Ravenous? I really don't know if I like it or not...

I had mixed, but generally positive feelings about RAVENOUS when I saw it in its initial release. I liked it enough to buy the DVD incarnation, and after watching it a couple more times I came to the conclusion that this is one of the best horror films the 90's gave us, and one of the ballsiest major studio productions since the glory days of the 70's. Marvelously idiosyncratic. One of those movies that gets more interesting with each subsequent viewing. B+.

Of the Italian Cannibal subgenre of the late 70s, the best one is easily CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. Don't get suckered in by the reputation of its main rival, CANNIBAL FEROX (a.k.a. MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY). FEROX is a piece of crap. HOLOCAUST is much more disturbing, thanks in part to Riz Ortolani's amazing score.
Ruggero Deodato, who made C.H., also made another pretty decent cannibal flick simply titled CANNIBAL (a.k.a.THE LAST SURVIVOR). It's not nearly as graphic or unsettling as C.H., but it's not bad in its own right.

"THE COOK, THE THIEF..." cannibal-themed? It's a hilariously entertaining movie, but, aside from the very last scene, and, one could argue, the metaphorical undertones, I don't see the connection.

hmmm
only couple people mentioned Italian Cannibal films. THey had a whole sub-genre devoted to these.

My Favorite Pure Cannibal Movie is:
-Dr. Butcher M.D. (Zombie Holocaust) Bonus being it features both natives doing their cannibal thing but zombies also
Honourable mention:
-Anthropophagus - eww fetus eating
-Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals - Although not too much cannibal action the numerous sex scenes in this soft core porno make up for it
-The only others I've seen Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox
_I also have a copy of The Untold Story which I haven't seen yet but hear is very very good

Has anyone seen the unrated version of Cannibal Ferox? I need to know if it's good and gory.

CAPTAIN BLAKE

Yeah, I just watched the uncut CANNIBAL FEROX on DVD, and it's still one of the most revolting movies ever made. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is a much better film in this vein, though. Not as chock full of gore scenes maybe, but when they do come around...uggghhh!
