I loved THE CELL which was sort of a rip off to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

The terrifying opening sequences of both WHEN A STRANGER CALLS and SCREAM were "inspired" (I'm trying to be nice here) by the excellent BLACK CHRISTMAS, which predated these slashers as the first horror film to feature an obscene phone-caller terrorizing young women. The twist, in which the killer is revealed to be inside the house (or in SCREAM's case, on the premises) was based upon a real-life urban legend. You can check it out at this awesome urban legend website: http://www.snopes.com

The Psycho remake was definatly a rip-off. Why did they have to mess with perfection?

Arrow already called it in his review, but I agree that Resurrection is a great rip off of Seven.
Bloodybitch - Can you call a remake a rip off?

I'm with ya on WHAT LIES BENEATH, JGJavi. While I enjoyed the film on a mindless level, it was derivative of almost every horror and suspense film in recent (or distant memory), including PSYCHO, REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO, HALLOWEEN, FATAL ATTRACTION, GHOST STORY, JAGGED EDGE and THE LADY IN WHITE.
Although I have enjoyed some of Robert Zemeckis' films in the past (his best being the underrated CONTACT), he seems to have spiraled downward into Spielberg-Lucas sell-out territory.

When it is done frame-by-frame line-by-line scene-by-scene with the only difference are the actors and that it was shot in color than yes I'd call it a rip-off. The original was taken from the novel of the same name Hitchcock changed it to fit the image in his mind. They could have followed the plot closer to the one in the book but they didn't.

Ive said it in many other posts, but "Offerings" is the worst rip-off. I t rips off Halloween in every way, same story, same music(no kidding, only difference is original Halloween theme was in 5/4 time and the Offerings theme is in 4/4.) Same basic setting. It rips off everything.

Silent Night, Deadly Night was a cool rip-off of Terror in Toyland. It may have been even better.

No offense, but how is Jaws a rip-off of Duel?

i'm not saying jaws is a bad movie, jaws was a great movie, but the similartities are there:
man vs truck, man vs shark
jaws almost seems possesed with killing those 3 men on the boat and in the it is detroyed
the truck almost seems possesed with killing the 1 man in the car and in the it is detroyed
spielberg made duel right before jaws and there are obvious similar storylines - he even used the sound in the final death scene of the truck in the death scene of jaws

I read in another chat forum that the misfits in THE FACULTY were "inspired" by the characters in THE BREAKFAST CLUB. Kevin Williamson is obviously a fan of that quintessential 80's teen flick, since his "Dawson's Creek" characters spent one whole episode bantering in detention.
Case in point:
Elijah Wood's Casey character: Anthony Michael Hall, the Geek.
Clea Duvall's Stokely character: Ally Sheedy, the Basket Case.
Josh Hartnett's Zeke character: Judd Nelson, the Rebel.
Jordanna Brewster's Delilah character: Molly Ringwald, the Princess.
Shawn Hatosy's Stan character: Emilio Estevez, the Jock.
After you eliminate these five characters by matching them with their BREAKFAST CLUB counterpart, you can figure out which odd man out (of the six leads) is the alien.
I personally think that Brewster's character was modeled after another Williamson creation: Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers character in the SCREAM series. Delilah was just a younger version.

Awesome little tidbit about the Faculty Antonio. After seeing the comparisons it has to be related somewhat to The Breakfast Club. Anyways back to the topic, my favorite ripoff is The Burning (blatantly ripping off the Friday movies).

HOW ABOUT THE PREY FROM JUST BEFORE DAWN, and DON'T GO IN THE WOODS. The Prey uses elements from both films, but even though it may be sad I like all three, they are good slashers (DGITW is just abit worse then the other two).
Now onto my favourite rip-offs eva-
FROM HALLOWEEN- FINAL EXAM (v. good), HE KNOWS YOUR ALONE (great) and PROM NIGHT(great, and does use a few elemnts from HALLOWEEN and BLACK CHRISTMAS).
FROM DELIVERANCE- RITUALS (my best horror/slasher eva), FINAL TERROR (v. good)
and JUST BEFORE DAWN (even better).
THERE ARE MANY MORE BUT I'LL LET OTHERS LIST
THEM.

Speaking of Jordanna Brewster of THE FACULTY, am I seeing things or does she sport a light moustache? Not the babe that most guys think she is, nor were the other two leading ladies in this flick (Clea Duvall and Laura Harris).

could sleepaway camp be considered a rip off to friday the 13th?

I thought Deep Blue Sea copied off of Jaws, because someone told me how the 3 sharks died (fire, electricution, explosion) was the same way Jaws died in the three different movies. I have only seen Jaws and in no rush to see the other 2.

Sleepaway Camp could be considered a rip-off of Friday the 13th, but then again so could a ton of other movies.
AntonioDelLago

DEEP BLUE SEA was the love child spawned by JAWS and THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE.
Every film that followed FRIDAY THE 13TH and featured a campground or summer camp setting could be considered derivative, including fan faves SLEEPAWAY CAMP and THE BURNING (the latter which was actually inspired by an urban legend titled "The Summer Of Cropsy").
The underrated gem JUST BEFORE DAWN also premiered during 1980, so it cannot be deemed a FRIDAY clone.
If you think about it, FRIDAY THE 13TH itself is a "ripoff" of several films that came before it (PSYCHO, HALLOWEEN and DELIVERANCE to name a few).

I guess you could say that all works of art are inspired in someway by all other works of art that preceded it.

You could also say there's a big difference between being "inspired" by something and flagrantly ripping it off...

BLAKE, when I use the term "inspired" with quotation marks, that's my way of being nice, although most of those clones don't deserve my pity and/or good will. Being a movie-lover is unequivalent to loving ALL movies!

Antonio, I was actually responding more to countchocula's post (and I agree that to continue to love horror films, you have to be nice (aka forgiving) to a lot of these mostly flawed gems, or you'll go mad when you recognise how rare TRULY GREAT horror films are; I myself am VERY forgiving, and have learned to find solace in a single frightening scene, even if the rest of the movie in question is an otherwise forgettable washout); to clarify, yes, just about every example of modern art is influenced by something which came before it, but for me to even consider something a piece of art in the first place requires that it offer a fresh spin on the familiar subject matter. FRIDAY THE 13th merely combined the recipes that made HALLOWEEN and DAWN OF THE DEAD (Savini's splatter effects) so successful, without anything really new being offered up in the process. Sure, the basic story of HALLOWEEN is an old one, but the film has a definitive style and visual aesthetic that raises it high above similar previous efforts (though BLACK CHRISTMAS is great in it's own right). FRIDAY THE 13th has no discernible style. It's an effective horror film (in parts), but it ain't "art". And that ain't necessarily a bad thing; the world needs fun, rip-off popcorn movies. They serve to accentuate and flatter the classic originals, and they're much cooler than boring rip-off popcorn movies. Don't want to come across as another critic/snob, just calling it like I see it.

Every horror movie of the past 25 years has ripped off TCM!!!!!
What are you guys talking about? Jaws is not a ripoff of Duel, SNDN is not a Terror in Toyland ripoff, Sleepaway Camp is not a ripoff of F13, and F13 is not a ripoff of Bloodbath. No offense, but lighten up man. The coolest SHARK ripoff is Great White, which was a Jaws ripoff.

Thats what the makers of the Last Broadcast claimed, but that is a crock!
They were crying that there were similarities...Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez didnt RIP-OFF anyone, they were inspired by the film " The Legend of Boggy Creek"!
The only similarities between TLB & TBWP is that they both were filmed as mock documentaries...
It was painfully obvious that the makers of TLB, were trying to get the same recognition as BW!
Every artist, no matter what field they work in are always inspired by another.
Everything is a derivative of something!
Even Sam Raimi has claimed that his film "Evil Dead" was paying homage to Romero. Check out the NOTLD documentary video by Tempe, Raimi is one of many filmmakers who claimed to be inspired by Romero's work!
There is a difference between Inspiration and Rip-offs.

Can you technically consider I Know What You Did Last Summer a rip off of Prom Night when technically it's based on a book from the mid-70's?
