H.P. Lovecraft was, without a doubt, one of the best Horrorwriters ever. Even if his stories are somewhat repetitive, you can't ignore how good they are. Thing is, they are pretty unfilmable and everyone who tried to make a movie out of them failed horribly. Think of LURKING FEAR, CUTHULLU MANISON ( Howard's gotta be spinning in his grave ), even IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS couldn't live up to Lovecraft.

Now that the Teen-Slash-O-Rama is over, I think it's time for someone to try again. I know it's impossible to put Lovecraft onscreen but I would like to see someone trying. What do you think?

Damn now your talkin; H.P. is one of my favorite authors. I think a couple of reasons his story to book fails:

1) HP's books are very wordy - writers use to be paid per word back then.

2) He didn't get hung up describing the monster. The reader could conjure it up with their own imagination

3) His story's are sometimes a little slow and modem movies just can't have that......(well ones fomr the US)

4) Many of his stories were short and there is just not enough material to make a movie from.

Movies to check out:

1) The Resurrected - This is probbaly one of the best book to movies from Howard. It is based on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. They took a few liberties with the story but all in all probably the closest to a book

2) Re-Animator & Bride of Re-Animator - If you have read the story Herbert West Reanimator, it is loosely covered in both of these movies. This was one of Howard's more off the wall stories. I believe he is/was criticised for this story but it one of my favorites. And hey Barbara Crampton is nekkid in this movie.

3) From Beyond - Another production of Yunza/Gordon (same as Reanimator) this was actually a very short story so once again a lot of creative license was used but at least we get Jeffrey Combs and Barabara Crampton again (Barbara again baring her assets)

4) In The Mouth of Maddness - I hate when movies try to use Howard's name in a lame attempt to draw tickets. The movie itself wasn't any particular Lovecraft story but had some references. Personally I liked the movie but I would not have made any mention to Lovecraft in credits or on the video box. Lovecraft fans could have fond the influence.

5) The Haunted Palace - Roger Coreman directed this one starring Vincent Price, the title is actually an Edgar Allen Poe story, more people know who he is, but the story itself is based on the Case of Charles Dexter Ward.

6) Castle Freak - Stuart Gordon once again teams up with Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. The story is very loosely based on The Outsider

Borderline Movies:

1) Bleeders - Released back in 97 starring Rutger Hauer is loosley based on the Lurking Fear It's an ok movie if you have nothing else to watch

2) The Necronomicon - A trilogy of storeis based on or inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Again not a bad flick, if you are a Brian Yunza fan he is responsible for the third story.

3) The Unnameable 2 - The Statement of Randolf Carter - This is a continuation of The Unnamable with the title of a different Lovecraft story which had nothing to do with the Unnamable and was a far better story. The only worth while items in this flick are Maria Ford nekkid the whole movie and Julie Strain and the Unnameable Creature.

Aviod the following like the Plague

1) The Unnamable - Stupid movie

2) The Curse - which is based on The Colour out of Space

3) Die Monster Die - Another movie based on The Colour out of Space

4) Cthulhu Mansion - Stupid Stupid movie save your money

These are the only ones I have seen here are a couple of good links to check out:

My fav Lovecraft flick is definitely Castle Freak. Bleeders was pretty cool. The creatures looked unique and the film had a nice little ending.

I've never read Lovecraft, but I really want to start soon. For the same reason I've stayed away from the movies, except Castle Freak, which I saw last week.

Actually, the box cover is what made me pick it up at Media Play. It just looked so fucking cool. I had never even heard of it before when I bought it.
