This is a pretty obscure little movie that fans of classic horror will enjoy, even though there isn't much horror. I never heard of this movie before but it was on TV last night and I thought it was worth making a post about it.
As I said, there isn't much horror to it but there is some seriously creepy atmosphere if you consider what it is about:
An English Landlord ( who is also interested in Parapsyology ) finds out that everytime he takes a picture of someone who is dying right at the moment of Death, there is a black point on the photo, near the soon-to-be-dead. Could it be the soul of that person, trying to break free? Or is it the Asphyx, kind of a greek Angel of Death? Soon, his girlfriend and his son are dying in an accident. As the movie goes on he keeps searching ways to trick the Asphyx and gain immortality which, needless to say, goes terribly wrong.
This movie is slow, really slow, sometimes terribly slow. Suspense is rather low but somehow there's a lot to this movie. The actors are all fine and the ending is seriously fucked. There are nearly no special effects but for me, that adds to the movie's charm. It isn't all good stuff though ( there is an unbelieveable awful scene involving a guillotine, you know when you get there, it's like the filmmakers thought : Hey, we've got a Guillotine over here, can we put it in the movie? ).
A lot of people will be bored by this movie but if you like "classic" horror and it comes your way, watch it, you're likely to not regret it. My rating is 7/10 and a place of honour among my videotapes of unknown horror movies.
