View Full Version : George Lucas kicks fans in the nuts yet again.

George Lucas has lost his flippin mind. I am one of many old school SW fans that felt that TPM was a flip of the bird to Lucas' long time fans (ya know the gripes, Bad acting, bad dialog, jake lloyd, Jar Jar Binks, Poop and fart jokes, The two headed announcer et al.)
And now another Kick in the nuts to Star Wars fans....
Owen Lars (who raised Luke from infancy on Tatooine) is not the brother of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Theyre not even related at all (WTF)?? According to the Novelization of ROTJ and the (ahem) "Official" Guide to the star wars Universe Owen and Ben are supposed to be brothers, that is why Obi-Wan trusted him with the guardianship of Luke. Not only is it clear to me now that Lucas does not care about his fans, he doesnt care about decent storytelling. I could go on and on but no one wants to read a rant (fat necked bastard putting his fat daughter in the movie as a twi'lek dancer!! arrrgh) okay now I quit. But I am saving 9.00 and NOT seeing this piece of celluloid (oh, im sorry...digital) shite.

Ok, seriously, what kind of worthless non-sense is this?
I consider myself a STAR WARS fan. I love the movies greatly, even TPM, and I'm eagerly awaiting AOTC.
I didn't consider NSYNC's cameo anything truly bad, to be honest. Sure, it screamed SELLOUT and all, but whatever.
But this... I mean, Owen and Obi-Wan are not related. WHOOPDEEFUCKINGDOO. Were they supposed to be related or something? Because seriously, I consider the fact that they're brothers or friends to be completely fucking worthless to the actual story. These are the kind of worthless STAR WARS details that really don't add that much to the story. So what if they aren't brothers? The movies never implied they were brothers. Obi-Wan isn't even sad when Owen is killed, for god's sake.
I mean, seriously... You're not gonna watch the movie because of THIS? Because this is seriously the most idiotic thing related to Star Wars that I have EVER heard.
I mean, for fuck's sake, people. IT'S A MOVIE.

Yes I have a good reason for not seeing the movie, IMO, it is going to be Hackneyed and Disconnected from a Trilogy that I loved and grew up with. I can understand that George Lucas is ALSO writing for a NEW generation but he has really thrown hard-core fans to the curbside (continuity changes, stating that he doesnt consider the books a part of "his" story etc) What I dont understand is why people are giving me shit for stating my opinion. Thats what these boards are for. I dont post on here often because , to be honest, I work and go to school and dont have alot of time on my hands. It seems to me that these boards are turning exceedingly Nazi-istic. Joblo is asking for money peridically to save the sight but its coming to the point that I dont feel welcome here. Its sad and pathetic...please explain to me why its wrong to be unhappy with something, should i be a "pop culture zombie" and except whatever crap hollywood hands to me?

First it was all the bitching, crying, and moaning over George Lucas giving N'Sync a VERY short cameo in Episode 2 as extras.
Then, two fans lined up and camped outside a theatre in Seattle, 5 months before Episode 2 opens up.
And now, you people are bitching because George Lucas decides to leave out a worthless sub-plot that probably wouldn't contribute to the story in any way.
I think it's safe to say that you Star Wars fans seriously need to get a life.
I agree.
This chaos is unnecessary.
If Lucas says that Jar Jar will become center stage in this film & Episode III, then we should push the panic button.

again, why the attacks? Im just stating MY opinion, I speak for no one else but myself. If other people are unhappy with the movies fine. If some people like it fine. I do not. And I dont consider it a "minor plot point" it was a driving force behind the original trilogy.... why am I arguing this? Or maybe its just that you need to realize there is more to life than Star Wars. If Episode 2 just so happens to be a good movie, I don't think a worthless plot point that only DIE-HARD fans knew about will affect the overall quality of the movie.

Yo!
Hey no one is attacking you they are just stating there opinion as well, so do not fret.
We all have differing views on what Lucas is up to.
Personally I think it is strange that he pays soo much attention to detail going as far as to tell people whick books are the Bible of SW so to speak then ignoring his own work.
Is is a major plot point, not really, does it show he may have early onset Alzhiemers, maybe.
Don't be so thin skinned we all get a little vocal around here but we try to keep it clean and impresonal which I think we have all done.
Happy posting.

Okay, this is enough. You guys really need to stop acting like your the ones making the movies ok. If you hate it so much make your own god damn film and stop crying over the ones that he makes. What you failed to understand is that George is the guy whose busting ass 24/7/365 just to make people like you happy. I mean, he's spent half of his life making you happy by making movie after movie after movie, not to mention comicbooks, guidebooks, history step by step books, and so on.
If you Can't respect that then I'm sorry, but you don't have the right to call your selves FANS.

I do agree that people nitpick a little too much at times, but you make it sound like he would be working at 7-11 if not for the fans demanding he make movies.
Lucas is a driven man and I think he will always make films, hey I would if I had created SW!
Overall I think Ol' George is still a great flick maker and he has done many wonderous things and been involved in many fantastic projects.
But I think the mystique slipped a bit with EPI and as far as EPII goes we shall just have to wait and see.
I'll be there, maybe not on opening day but soon after.

I'm not talking about directing, I'm talking about writing. He's the one who comes up with all of these great stories for us to enjoy. Yeah of course he's also got one hell of a steady bank income, but even with all the cash he has now, he still goes and writes more and more of the Star Wars Saga... For Us!
Does he do it for us though? All he seems to be doing of late is pissing the fans off.

Its quite amazing I've only just realised George Lucas must be the King geek of them all.
He wrote and made and continues to make the films
any good films he thinks of such as Indiana Jones series .. he realises that they won't increase his geek rating so he gives them to spielberg instead.
He is just happily living off Star Wars money, not bothering to release DVDs etc because its just too much work to actually put the whole thing together and speak on a commentary. Why bother meanwhile he sees his income is dropping bit so he thinks write .. I'll quickly whizz together Episode 1 2 and 3 get me so more money ..doesn't have be good, its got a massive fan base and the others sucked and they still made me a millionaire. Meanwhile he sits back on the hardwork of Spielberg and makes himself executive productor of all young indiana spin-offs
and just admires his huge sci-fi geek following and is proud of himself cause he is king of it all. All the star wars fans are like the sexual conquests of Sebastian Valmont in Cruel Intentions.

If you were thinking of more along the lines of Liberal arts there is Bowling Green State University just 30 miles south of here. A lot of people are just watching the prequels very closely looking for ANYTHING that could be wrong with it. I'm sure if there were so many people watching this closely when the original movies were made, they'd haven given the same kind of shit to Lucas even then.
James Logan
02-06-2002, 09:35 AM
Actually at the time a lot of critics did give Lucas a bad time for this kind of shit, or so I hear. But in that time, people didn't think a movie was bad just because other people say it is. Today...well, EPISODE ONE came out, people said it sucked, so everybody found it cool to say it sucked. I mean, it's a great honour to criticize George Lucas, after all. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
And I didn't know Owen and Obi-Wan were brothers. I mean, I thought they mentioned they were close LIKE brothers I think but that's all. Anyway, who gives a fuck? As long as they're close enough for Obi to trust Owie with keeping Luke, that's ok with me.
C'mon, folks, I'm a big SW fan too, but hey! N'Sync in a cameo? No need to make a fuss, if they hadn't told ya you would probably never have noticed. And this? Who gives a shit? It's not important, people. Really not.

Well, even though it may not be the best Star Wars movie ever made, I think it's still better than some of the other Sci-Fi movies that have come out lately (i.e. Battlefield Earth, Red Planet, Mission to Mars, Supernova, etc.).
But on the topic of Owen and Obi-Wan being brothers, the only thing that is canon in Star Wars is the movies, so I wouldn't put too much stock into anything said outside the movies. Plus, I have to agree with most other people here, I don't think many people are really going to care. If something as minor as this is enough to stop you from seeing the movie (which I doubt, you'll be seeing it http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif), that's fine, leaves more room for me http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Start with the Timothy Zahn novels. I ain't sure about their titles in English though. But if it's like here in France, at the beginning of the book there should be a chronology including all novels and movies.

Thanks James. Have you read the books yourself?
Common Sense Man
02-13-2002, 06:03 AM
Yes the Timothy Zahn books are good but you must realize that some of the books Lucas does not acknowledge as official.
There are only a few things that Lucas takes as gospel.
Here they are:
CANONICAL
It *MUST* be noted that NOT everything with a STARWARS logo has the same status.
According to LucasFilm's own published criterion (StarWars Insider #1) *ONLY* the FILMS, the FILM NOVELS and the RADIOPLAYS can be considered "canonical" (the article actually also uses the word "gospel"). AND IN THAT ORDER - which means that the films over-ride the novels which in turn, over-ride the radioplays.
EVERYTHING ELSE is *not* canon. At best it can only be "official". Most of the STARWARS materials released in recent years are of a very poor standard, with regard to actual research and attention to detail. Sadly the marketing wing of Lucasfilm rigidly enforced a 'continuity policy" which meant that no one product should contradict another, so if a licensee, such as WestEndGames got in first with an "official" opinion, then EVERY other licensee was OBLIGED to follow along with it, REGARDLESS of potential error!
So you see any other book besides the official novels written by George can later be thrown out if George decides to change the story.
So read what you like but know that it may have nothing in common with any future project that George does.
Out...............

This has already been answered, but I'd like to throw my recommendation over to the original Timothy Zahn trilogy. It starts with Heir to the Empire, then Dark Force Rising, then The Last Command. They feature the best non-movie Star Wars characters (Talon Karrade, Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn), and they are definitely the best SW novels ever written. And they were the first ones written after the Star Wars revival (actually, they caused the SW Book revival).
They were the first ones I read and I loved them. I'm sure you will too.
Common Sense Man
02-14-2002, 01:55 AM
Yes the Zahn books are the only SW books I have ever read and they melded well into the exsisting lore, plus they where very good reads.
I have shied away from all the others as there are just too many of them, where do you start.
Plus they seem too serialized, like all those cheesy star trek novellas.

AND shoot me now as I think I’m the only person in the WORLD that LOVED...Jar-Jar! This George needed money that’s why he did the next three…BULLSHIT! Can you say THX or ILM or Lucas Film or Lucas Arts and so on!!!! HE did them because HE (George) WANTED TO!!!!!!!!! George wanted to go HOME! Listen (or read) what he has ALWAYS said about HIS Star Wars (yes it is his not the fans) experiences. HE is doing what HE wants & thinks is best for HIS story!!! HE is having fun, I for one love it! Episode II, I’m counting down the days!!! </font>
