When did you really start watching horror movies? I, unfortunatly, had a mom who wouldn't let me watch horror movies as a kid. I mean, the scariest things I watched as a kid was ALIENS, POLTERGUIEST, and THE CARE BEARS MOVIE (LOL). I mainly grew up watching some of the darker kids movie like LEGENDS, LABERYNTH, and stuff like that. I mean, I got caught watching KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE once and got in trouble. I was supposed to see one movie at the theater, but snuck into CHILDS PLAY 3 and she found out about it (don't know how) and I again got into trouble. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I really started watching horror, catching up on a lot of stuff. Crap, just a few days ago I finished watching all of the HALLOWEEN movies for the first time. Did any of you have these problems or am I the only one with wacked parents?

My dad pretty much let me watch whatever I wanted to when I was younger. My mom on the other hand didn't want me near a horror film. However, she would let me watch the cheesy sci-fi/horror flicks from the old days like Godzilla and King Kong. I didn't actually start collecting and "getting into" horror films until about 3 or 4 years ago.

Ah, yes. I was going to do a big rant about this a while ago, but decided not to. Now's as good a time as any. . .

My parents never let me watch movies like the ones I watch now. They never liked horror movies when I was young, so I was never allowed to, or even given a chance to watch it to make up my own mind. They got into my head that horror movies would give me nightmares (which is true, to this day, but that's another point), etc. So I walked by the horror section, sometimes even ran by it, cause the boxes scared me. Went to birthday parties where all the kids watched a horror movie (one described as "a guy with an axe killing people") except me, where I'd stay upstairs with the guys' parents. Fun party. My parents had put the "fear" in me.

Much like Prairiedogking, I was allowed to watch stuff like Willow, Legends, Labyrinth (Jim Henson, great children entertainer), but nothing from the horror section. Though one day I was actually allowed to rent "Garbage Pail Kids:The Movie" though it was in the horror section.

A few years later, I started looking at the boxes, and read behind them. Some looked interesting (though I've seen them now, and they sucked big time). Then I started sneaking downstairs to watch porn. . I mean, horror movies late at night. No gory ones, I still had the "fear" in me, but horror-lite I suppose, mostly movies like Leprechaun and a few of the Puppet Master movies (which a friend had lent to me as well). So I gradually started working my way up. The popular ones (Friday 13th, NOES, Halloween) still scared me, so I didnt bother. I did watch Halloween on TV once, then Night of the Living Dead afterwards. Nothing much for a while afterwards though. Caught Army of Darkness late one night, thought it was the greatest movie I've ever seen. Didn't know it was part of a trilogy though, and when I found out, took me a while to rent the first two. Now, Evil Dead 2 ranks among my top 10 favorites.

Then I got so curious, I rented a bunch of the popular ones, just to say I tried. I fell in love with Halloween, then started getting into the others (Friday being the last series, but I got into it a year ago, now have the whole series, great stuff).

Now, I can't stop buying horror movies. I'd buy them, watch them, and if they were good, keep them. If they sucked, I sold em back. But now, I think it's safe to say I've conquered my fear of horror. I'm 21 years old and am desensitized now. . .dammit. I blame my parents. That wrong?

My parents let me watch whatever I want.
When I was 14 I wanted to rent Eyes Wide Shut but they wouldn't let me so my mom comes and she's like "He's renting it and that's it" and the rogers woman is like "You do know that it has lots of nudity in it right" and my mom's like "It's none of your buisness what he watches, it's his decision" and she rented it for me

Wow I totally love my mother and father but especially my mother! I saw my first horror movie when I was three. My mother dragged me to every damn horror movie out there every weekend! Her mother did the same thing so you can believe this will be a carried down trait through generation to generation. Except I think I will show my children everything else before those horrible Scream movies! Yuck! Ive seen all of the great horror movies of the 80's on the silver screen! Every Saturday mother and I would watch Creature Feature, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Dr. Who and Elvira you name it! She loves Dracula Movies and my father always takes her to see them even now that they are divorced they still are the best of friends! My dad always collected horror stuff with me and bought me my Elvira Calendars, hell I owe most of my trading cards to that great man! My sister was never really into horror but she loved to scare the crap out of me and she rented TCM for me one time and let me watch Sleepaway Camp with her one time in her wonderful room that was always off limits! Now I am married to a wonderful man who introduced me to many Italian horror films I never knew of and he has almost all the music to every horror movie possible. I am lucky, through the bad times or the bad days I still know I am lucky and I never take anything or anyone for granted!
