Since I just got into giallo, I've only seen Suspiria. And it was great.

Anything he did from 1975-1984 is a must see, however, he did do some other good one's(Trauma, Two Evil Eyes, Opera, Bird With The Crystal Plumage).

from what i've seen, Suspiria and Trauma. I think the guys pretty overated. his movies just move too slow for my impatient ass. Tramua was okay at best but it was a little too conufusing. i still have no idea what happened. oh well. i'm still willing to give him a chance and all.

Trauma and Creepers(phenomena) are the best Argento starters.. if you jump right into Suspiria and Deep Red you'll just OD on his technique and it wont be the same..
My advice would be to ease into it... try those two first (his most "american-horror" ...you'll recognize alot of faces) and ease into the more hardcore stuff..

How many Argento fans were pleased with SLEEPLESS? I thought it was fantastic to see Argento return to his roots when he made his best work. With a score by GOBLIN and those fantastic camera moves, which were reminiscent of his DEEP RED days, I was too happy. Most of his films over the past 10 years have not been great, but I think he's back where he belongs now.

Sleepless was a return to the Days of Deep Red and Tenebrae, that movie had alot of stlye to burn ,and was scary at times, even though the only problem i had with the movie was that one star was not in it long enough.I loved the Goblin score, and the Train scene was awesome.
To anyone new to dario's work, the 1st movie he/she should rent is Deep Red,then Suspiria,Tenebrae, and then work you're way up.However the only DA that truly pissed me off was Phantom of the Opera.he has a Major comeback with Stendal Syndrome and then he does that piece of shit. Why?
The most underatted has to be Trauma, that movie has it all.

Right. I watched Suspiria, and really liked it. I felt it was like The Exorcist and the orginal Haunting, in the way that, although it didn't have the special effects or resources that many modern movies have, you could still see their worth - the suspence, the plot, the idea behind the whole thing, the acting, and the direction worked *really* well.
But here's my problem: I watched Sleepless. It was utter crap. :(
(Ducks the flames heading my way) Sorry, just my opinion.
What happened???? Is Suspiria the odd one out, or is Sleepless?

Unfortunately Nonhosonno was butchered by Artisan for it's Region 1 release. I have yet to see the cut version, but i've heard scenes were cut, the music was changed, and it's not in it's original widescreen version. I've scene the original uncut italian import DVD from Medusa, and it's excellent. I would'nt make a final judgement about it until you watch this version, not the botched one called Sleepless.
This is same thing that was done to Phenomena. It was cut for an American release and retitled as Creepers, or something like that. Why do the distributors feel the need to do this, it's ridiculous.

I just watched Suspiria last night (and I posted my review of it in the review section today), and Deep Red this afternoon. I LOVED Suspiria, but thought that Deep Red was decent. I own it since it was part of the 10 movie set I bought, so I'll surely be watching it again before too long. I did not think that Deep Red was really as stylish as Suspiria, but a worthy movie nonetheless. Now I need to track down some more of his stuff.

Ok, looking at the other Argento thread on this page, I've come to believe that my copy of Deep Red must be all cut to hell. So I look on the back of the set it came in, and sure enough it's rated R. I assume the uncut version is unrated. This really pisses me off. It explains the choppiness of the kill scenes, and I imagine that it is why I didn't feel that the movie was as stylish as Suspiria.
GODDAMMIT!!!!!

Just saw Opera and was a bit disappointed with it. There were some fantastic kill scenes in it, but the overall story was just... well... stupid. Some of the stupid things I learned from Opera:
(here come the spoilers, highlight to read)
Needles taped 1/2 inch in front of your eyes will automatically cause your eyelids to bleed.
When human skin is cut with scissors, it sounds just like cardboard.
A bullet shot through a peephole and through a person's skull will then change trajectory and hit a phone lying on the floor 30 feet away.
Women being chased by killers often pause to change songs on their CD players.
Ravens make excellent eye-witnesses.
It takes police days to tell the difference between a burned human body and a mannequin.
