View Full Version : Friday the 13th: What's the Big Deal?

My main life question (in the horror movie field) is why everyone enjoys the FRIDAY THE 13TH movies.
I mean, they're obvious ripoffs of HALLOWEEN, yet nowhere near as good. They're too goofy to be a good as HALLOWEEN, and they're not as much fantasy (read: Not goofy enough) to compete with NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.
While the films have the lowest box-office average of the big 3 ($25M per film), I still marvel at their popularity.
Could someone please explain this to me?

I'm as baffled as you are. The only one I found the least bit enjoyable was part six, but even then, it was pretty bad!
The only thing I can think of is that the slasher genre was really popular back in the eighties, though that still doesn't explain why EVERY F13th movie made so much money.

The thing that Friday the 13th had going was its anti-sex approach. It established the rule that if you had sex, you were dead, if you didn't, you had a chance depending on what character you are.

I agree they really do suck!!! They are boring, predictable, and just plain stupid. Halloween is a good example of 70's/80's horror, Friday the 13th is an example of the very bad!!! This what scream was makeinf fun of!

I'll tell you why I love the Friday The 13th...it's because of Jason. Jason in part 6 became a relentless zombie and got bigger and badder with every movie.
When you watch a Halloween flick you're not suppose to cheer for Michael, but Friday The 13th you're supposed to cheer for Jason. You want him to kill those stupid teens.
I for one enjoyed all the Friday films and I think the lasts ones tried to be more than slasher flicks.
part 6 was solid, had good characters
part 7 had Jason battling a "Carrie" like girl and had great effects.
part 8 had jason on a cruise boat and in New York
Part 9 (I didnt like it) did have a whole new approach to the series.
At least Jason gets around and to me he'll always be one of my favs.
looking forward to seeing Jason in space...Jason X baby!

Well Arrow, I'll agree Part 6 was decent (I enjoyed Part 4 a bit), but the rest are horrible. I'm still baffled you gave the original 4 "Arrow In the Heads". As for Jason X, it does look fun, but shouldn't that be a spoof? You know the makers know Fridays aren' that good when they don't even put the name on a sequel.
As for Part 7, it was Carrie 2 before the Rage came out. In fact, the only thing that saved it from behind an extremely horrible film compared to the stellar Halloween 4 that was released the same year is that Kane Hodder is the man as Jason Voorhees.
Part 8 was discraceful. It was campy as hell, boring as hell (Jason Takes Manhattan? More like Jason Takes Manhattan Sewers), and I never knew Jason could fly (Look at the Asian girl's death; she spots Jason, runs up 4 stories, and he's already in the dance room. Look at the rocker's death. Jason's on the ladder above her, she runs down, and boom! Jason's there and nails her with her own guitar). I thought Jason Goes to Hell was decent...for about 15 minutes. The 15 minutes of screen time the true Jason Voorhees gets.
As for being more than slashers, Halloween did that, and we got The Revenge of Michael Myers. And what's the point of having characters if you don't cheer for them? I WANTED Laurie Strode to survive. I cheered for Jamie Lloyd. I thought Tina and Rennie were so damned annoying I kept hoping Jason would just show up and put me out of my misery for a year until the NEXT sequel comes out.
MY Friday the 13th Film Ratings:
Friday the 13th - 3/10
Friday the 13th Part 2 - 2/10
Friday the 13th 3-D - 2.5/10
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - 6/10
Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Beginning - 1.5/10
Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives - 6.5/10
Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood - 3/10
Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan (Sewers) - 0.5/10
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - 4/10 (at least they tried something new....)
Jason X (script) - 6/10

Two kinds of people exist in this world: Friday The 13th lovers and Friday The 13th haters. I love them.
And I didn't think Tina was annjoying I actually dug her a lot.
And the original is a slasher classic.

Well, Arrow, the former is definately in the minority. The original is a slasher classic? You know its not when the film's writer bashes his own work. There's a reason the Friday the 13th is considered the ass-end of the horror genre. You honestly believe Friday the 13th is in the same league as The Exorcist, Halloween, Psycho, and A Nightmare on Elm Street? Ha! I have not found one area, internet or otherwise, that considers it a slasher classic. Its boring, convulted, idiotic, and the biggest Halloween rip-off this side of...well, its the biggest Halloween rip-off on the face of the earth. I kept expecting peopple to refer to Mrs. Voorhees as the "boogeywoman" just to complete the plagerism. Hell, I'm surprised Compass International didn't sue.

At a friends house stayed up all night started at like 4pm and ended when after number 9 we all fell asleep I hated all of them, and it was almost as bad as the time at a birthday party of a friend we watched and Adam Sandler and Pauly Shore marathon....but that's another horror story.

Arrow, why did I watch them all? Besides the fact I want to see every film in the main franchises, I hoped they would actually improve with each entry. Unfortunately, the series got dumber and dumber. Jason was an idiotic killer, and all of his killing techniques were so far-fetched it isn't funny (God; I wish I could through someone in a sleeping bag against a tree and have them blow up!). Voorhees is a Michael Myers wannabe to the extreme. At least Halloween has some class.

Hey Arrow, i loved all the Friday the 13th movies cause they had good characters and they were real scary. But my favorite Friday the 13th of all time was part 6. Cause i liked when the kid tried to convince the sherrif that Jason was still alive, and he didn't believe him to it was to late. My mother's favorite Friday the 13th movie was the very first one she didn't like any of the sequels at all.

You keep on mentionning how Friday the 13th is a Halloween rip off, ignoring the fact that Halloween is a Black Christmas rip off. They're slasher movies man, I won't ignore the fact that Halloween is a staple in the genre (check my review) and has more meat than Friday The 13th but in my book Friday The 13th is a staple in it's own way. I enjoyed them both and don't see why you have to compare them all the time. They're not the same...try to enjoy them on that level. If not...c'est la vie.
And yes without Friday The 13th or HALLOWEEN Scream would be about puppy dogs and ice cream...

I see y'all been havin' a really intense debate over Jason and Michael Myers and which is the best series, well I personally think it's the Friday series for the simple fact that I'd be more afraid if that nut Jason was after me in a dark alley(or the woods) than if that mildly psycho M. Myers was; all he does is spy on his victims half the time while Jason wants BLOOD! Also more nudity in Jason movies.
Then again I thought Blair Witch was lame.

F13 films aren't supposed to be "good" or "logical", they're just supposed to be fun. That's why I love Jason Goes to Hell. It's full of sex and gore. That's all it needs to be full of. Who cares about the originality of the plot?

The main reason Friday the 13th became popular is because the killer appealed to everyone. Jason has became an icon for the slasher genre, if you mention slashers, most people will think of Jason. Yes Michael Myers and Freddy have also become icons, just Jason is more so. I do not know why, but it's why F13 is so popular.

Hmmm....Friday the 13th...
I actually like it better than Halloween. They only place they are similar is in the openning scenes. They both have a killer POV shot and a young couple who are currently getting it on.
The rest is pretty original and pretty far off from Halloween. C'mon, one is set in the suburbs and the other in the woods. How similar can they be? The gore scenes were handled well, the suspense was there, and the pouring rain was used to great effect. Then when good ol' Mrs. Voorhees was revealed as the killer in the end...well, she turned out to be really FUCKING NUTS! SHE FREAKED ME OUT. Instead of the strong silent type (like Michael), we got an out of control psychopath who beat the shit out of her victims and ranted insanely to herself. F13 is a benchmark as far as slashers go and a personal fav of mine. Don't mess wit' it.
Everybody has their own opinion on the sequels. In my opinion, the Friday the 13th series reigns over the Halloween and Nightmare series. Sure, they don't work as one big coherent storyline, but they're all great individual films. I'd even vouch for parts 2-4 as being some of the best slasher films made in the early 80s. Jason Lives was also excellent in it's horror/comedy way. I like them all except Part VIII and JGTH...even JGTH is redeemable for all it's great violence. Jason X looks promising...
As far as the others go Michael Myers died at the end of Part 2 in my humble opinion. The following sequels were either terrible (Part 3), painfully average (Halloween 4, H20) or medicore (Halloween 5, Halloween 6). I'm not really a big Elm Street fan, but I did enjoy them and found them all to be good with the exception of Dream Child and Freddy's Dead.

I love Jason. Arrow is right over there, no love for voorhees at all. They have original killings, T&A, and one bad-ass killer. What else could you want? I thought part 2 was creepy because the sack made it a lot more realistic. I thought shelly should'nt have died. I liked the sleeping bag & speargun out of all. Jason X will be very good, I've read an early draft of the script. Guess me & Arrow will see u at the premiere!!!

The only one I found really good was the original. I liked and stomached (but didn't love) part 2, 3, and 4. After those 4 movies, I hated the others. And Part 2, 3, and 4 had some bad actions by the characters as well. FT13th part 1 is the only one I really loved. Oh yeah, anyone play the Friday the 13th video game? Count me as one of the Friday the 13th haters. But, believe it or not, they are not the worst slasher series. Though, they are from the 70's/80's. Nope, the worst of all time is Leprachaun and Leprachaun 2(I didn't bother seeing the direct to video sequals after that). Anyway, I can't believe many people say the first is the best. That is the worst one. I mean, the girl who played Jason's mom? Talk about bad acting! I have said this elsewhere, but the only noteworthy thing about the first Friday the 13th film is to see Kevin Bacon in his first movie. #'s 2,3,4 and 7 didn't have anything that really distinguished them at all. Parts 5 and 6 showed some potential and promise but still delivered them horridly. Part 8 was a lot better quality wise. But there was so much missed opportunities. The number one being the fact the film was mistitled. It could have been fun seeing Jason tear the streets out in Manhattan and slaughter the people there, and I was actually hoping it would be fun. Certainly, the title, Jason Takes Manhattan, made it sound promising. It was heartfelt to see the movie waste the bulk of its time in the cruise ship and with its feeble attempts of characterization. They don't even get to New York until the last twenty minutes and when they do, all Jason does is hunt for the survivors. It totally blew. The movie still managed some amusing scenes such as Jason staring at a billboard with a hockey mask in it. But for the most part the movie was, at best mediocre, which I suppose is good compared to most of the others. Now somebody said that the Friday the 13th films are just about having fun and not about characterization, good writing or even acting, I can accept that(although, in my opinion, the audience has to have some kind of rappor with the characters and I don't mean they have to be fully dimensional, just enough for us to like them, which sometimes the actors can even do that themselves) if they were fun. But atleast the first 8, they are not. I mean, I just got done finishing saying how letdown I was at how much they squandered it. I also agree that just because a movie is a rip-off doens't mean its not entertaining. Look at Jason Goes To Hell for an example. It is a blantant rip-off on The Hidden(which happens to be one of my all time favorite sci-fi horror films) and yet is still lots of fun. I mean, it's not great but as slam bang in your face slasher entertainment, it's not half bad. The series I enjoyed the most are the nightmare on elm street series and Chucky. I also have a confession to make. Even I pan the first 8 Friday's I will still be there to see part 10. And I will definately be there to see Freddy vs. Jason.

I can't believe the love being shown to F13:3 by some of the schmoes. This film does not follow logically after Part 2 and I'll go over a few reasons.
First off, Part 3 follows 2 the same night after Jason attacks Ginny and Paul. After doing that, he seemingly takes the time to shave his head, perfectly heal his shoulder wound and grow 6" and put on about 40 lbs. That's pretty good for a few hours in between the end of part 2 and the beginning of part 3.
The characters are so generic. I could care less about any of them. I was hoping that the van would crash or the cops had hauled them all to the pokey for having their bag of blunts.
The flashback sequences are a joke as Jason looks like he does in Part 3, but in actuality, he should at least look like he did in Part 2. And the ending was just bad. How the hell did Pamela sew her head back on?? I know, it was just a dream, but that was the original end to the film. They made it into a dream sequence after that ending tested poorly.
I really enjoyed F13:1,2,4,and 6 but the rest just didn't do it for me and since there are 9 and I like 4, I can't give the series a passing grade. But I don't hate it as much as some of the other schmoes.

Jesus Christ. I agree with The Arrow. All of the "Friday" films rule and are really cool and important to the Genre. I love them all. The original Friday the 13th is slow at times, but it is a classic, has great performances, a great climax, a decent storyline, and the characters are more memorable in this one. These films dont try to be masterpeices, just some fun for their fans.

The original Friday the 13th is slow at times, but it is a classic, has great performances, a great climax, a decent storyline, and the characters are more memorable in this one. These films dont try to be masterpeices, just some fun for their fans. </font>

I really enjoyed part 2 a huge deal, but apparently it isn't that popular here...I do however agree with The Rob on his point that as a sequel, Jason goes to Hell sucked...but if it were a TOTALLY different movie, it would have been awesome...I can't believe that the creator of the first one wrote that, though!!!!Part 6 was also a strange approach to Jason....Not much gore, and, for the records, it is SO FAR the only Friday without nudity.

Oops, I entered to soon...part 6 does however, have a strong sex scene with strong sexual talk, but no nudity...Friday the 13th also had a great video game, even though it was voted worst game of the year, that game was FUN...same with the Nightmare on Elm Street game, but Friday's game was MUCH better.

After seeing Jason Goes to Hell recently I have come to a conclusion. Jason apperence changes from 2 to 3 because he goes into Paul's body. This would explain Paul's disappereance and Jason's shoulder healing but not his head getting shaved.

Actually, you must live in the understanding that all movies are ripoffs...Life imitates art, art imitates life...Friday imitated Halloween...Halloween imitated Friday....Who cares...The movies are great and entertaining, can't you live on that and not try to be intelligent when you watch...Forget
the flaws, forget the copycatting, watch the movie and enjoy or hate...It's that simple.

excatly. there not well acted or good but for entertainment factor you cant go wrong with them. theres three kinds of movies in this world, good ones, bad ones, and bad yet entertaining ones, most of the friday the 13th movies fall into the last pile. at least to me they do(i probably already posted inthis topic and i dont know why im bumping it but i am. meh) I still find them to be entertaining and thats all a movie should be(again, imo). blah.

Ok so consider this, pretend you are in the year 1980, think of what options you have horror movie wise in this year and what horror had to offer in this year and then ask yourself this threads question once again.
Now I can not speak for those who's generation was not the 80's or they were too young to truly appreciate the 80's but as someone who's coming of age time was the 80's I must tell you that these movies stick with you because even though it may seem like a rip of Halloween you did not have the slasher overkill that we have today.
Back then there was genuine excitement over new horror movies, people got into the movies, still jumped, still got scared, still appreciated instead of mock as most people in theaters do now, and clapped at the appropriate time.
The series did go down hill as the sequels numbered but when they first came out they were a new concept, an original idea and not an obvious rip off like you have today.
Next time a question like this comes up, consider the time period it may give you an answer.:p

I never knew there were so many Friday 13th haters in here, well I aint seen any of the Friday films at all. I'm more of a NOES fan than a Friday person. I aint a lover and I aint a hater, I'm more or less in a dark corner hiding in the shadows watching people argue on what is good and what is not. Well, someday I'm gonna watch these Friday films and see if they are what the lovers on this board say they are. I want to watch Jason X because it looks like good pop-corn entertainment.
I saw Halloween 5 last night and I must say it was boring, I hated it. The only good thing I thought was where Myers impaled that teen with the garden fork in the barn. But other than that I didn't really enjoy it.

This serie is my favorite that's for sure.
I love cheese and it is never boring.
My favorite - one is the spoof - oriented : F13th 6
It is really great, very entertaining and sometimes stylish.
This serie has sometimes really cool characters : Crispin Glover, Tom Matthews, Corey Haim, Jennifer " V " Cook, ...
I love the camp factor,too.

Wow, and here I thought everyone liked at least one Friday the 13th. Some are better than others but I thought everyone had a favorite. I think the appeal of the films has always been how many new ways can we find to kill a group of idiots in this movie. I mean these high school/college students are being outsmarted by a deformed mongoloid with probably a 3rd grade education. An UNSTOPPAPBLE deformed mongoloid with a 3rd grade education but c'mon. I guess you get it or you don't. I think these films really stick with folks who had their coming of age in the 80's. The Halloween flicks are awesome as well but how many different ways did Michael Meyers dispose of the cast? He sure didn't slam any folks in to a tree while they were in a sleeping bag. I saw a post on here that said that opposed to the Halloween films you root for the killer in Friday and you do. More power to the Friday fans and to the rest of you……keep on trying. They will grow on you. I promise.

FRIDAY THE 13TH SERIES RULE!!
YAY!!
**Notices the killing eyes everyone in the room toss at him**
Er...buu!
No, really...Friday the 13th series are so loved becasue of a simle thing: Part 1, part 1 is a slasher classic and a movie lots of people enjoy! Thats whenn they decided to keep on!!
The series became what I like to call "Party Flicks" a movie you ONLY see because they are FUN to watch.
Don't tell me you don't enjoy seeing one cool ass killer going around with a bigg ass machete, killing dumb ass teens who are ussually having sex?! If you don't...What are you doing here? This is what the horror genre is all about! pure FUN.
You don't sit and watch these horror movies and expect them to be good, you just wanna have fun, either by yourself or with a buncha friends, you can always have a good time with ANY of these movies.
And what I like the most is the cheese they put on the movies (Specially from part 6 and ahead), they turn the killer into a zombie, send him to hell and even to space in the future! They know these are not GOOD movies, but they are sure as hell they are bound to make people amuse themselves.
So in conclusion, there is ABSOLUTELY no point in hating Friday The 13th's for not beiing GOOD, they are bound to be fun. If they are popular is becuase they are FUN (And so I will be repeating my FUN statement)...I hope you got my point...IMO...:D
PS: A movie you should hate for being popular is "XXX" (Vin Diesel)...I think there is no movie I will ever hate more that that useless, worthless piece of ass pluncking penguin shit.
VIVA JASON!

Scream was gay, boring, stupid. Friday the 13th is a slasher classic, their fun. personaqlly, I like Jason, Freddy is too much of an idiot, and I have lost interest in Michael because of his seriousness and everything. Jason's in the middle. I hated all of the characters in The Halloween sequels and the NOES sequels. I like alot of the characters in the friday series.

Wow, didn't expect to see a lot of FT13 hostility on here.
Anyway, I don't know why I love the Friday The 13th series. It's difficult to explain. These films were on TNT and USA all the time when I was a kid, and they were always "off limits," for child viewing. Which of course, makes them all the more appealing ;)
My parents never wanted me to watch them, but I used to stay up late and scare the hell out of myself viewing them anyway. For me anyway, the Friday films are just nostalgia. Whenever I hear Henry Manfredini's chilling score from the first four films, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
So, in closing, I can't explain why I love the Friday films. They're really just a relic from my childhood, and a good reminder that horror films didn't used to feature the latest stars from Dawson's Creek, or have "witty" or "hip" inside jokes (Damn you Williamson!).

how the hell cud they be halloween rip-offs? i admitt they r similar but who cares? halloween is an amazing movie, but f13 did NOT rip it off. If u wanna talk rip off, read Arrows review ofbloody murder

Psychofreak, I do respect your opinion but Steve Miner(Director of Friday the 13th Part 2 and 3) said in a Halloween interveiw that they were obviously trying to copy the sucess of Halloween with a similar type of movie. But yes, the king of all rip-off's is Bloody Murder. I dont see how this move didnt get its ass sued off.

Sorry, but the rip-off thing is farcical. F13TH was made because of Halloween's success; they both feature unstoppable killers; they're both slasher films; the similarities end there. Halloween is one of the few slashers that aspired to truly scare the viewer. F13TH was pure exploitation, the tagline: ''Come, watch them die'' is proof of that. F13TH even started out with a female killer! And then progressed to a cannibal redneck killer, to a zombie killer; none of which bear similarity to Michael. There's a litany of differences between the two. Far more than similarities, actually.
Furthermore, Halloween began imitating F13TH. Look at the difference between Halloween's 1 and 2; the faster pace, the more violent kills, the variety of weaponry Michael employed to kill in lieu of his standard kitchen knife. Hell, there probably wouldn't have even been Halloween sequels if it wasn't for the success of F13TH.
F13TH was different enough from Halloween to be ''similar'', but not a ''rip-off''. Bloody Murder, on the other hand, is most certainly a ''rip-off''.
Of course, these are all just my opinions. I'm not attacking Halloween, I'm just defending F13TH.

Yeah, Its plain to see a big difference from Halloween 1 and 2. But not all of this is because of Friday the 13th and other slashers. One reason is prolly because the budget difference. I mean they had more money to do things they couldnt afford in the original. Maybe another reason is that people couldnt go along with the "slow"-paced Halloween. They wanted more action. I guess thats what they got. I mean I hear people complain about how Halloween sequels dont stay true to the original but you have a different audience that cant sit still for 5 minutes if someone doesnt get dismembered. But I think in every sequel, whether the atmosphere or pace changes, one thing remains the same...The Shape's pure evil, mystery and phantom-like qualities.

Personaly I do have a bad feeling towards horror films with more than one sequel.
In my experance they tend to grow into an absimal mess by the third film and beyound that they story become so twisted and unreconiseable(i.e like my spelling) that you don't know how the whole situation came about in the first place.
However I think the majority of the people on this board watch the FRIDAY films for the character.
Why not if you love him/her that much then you are going to want to see them again and again.
I have never found a horror character that justify's myself watching him for more than two films(rarley anyway).
Jason is someone that I like and I am yet to try watching more than one FRIDAY film.
I think it's not that the films are always reported to be amazing rather Jason thirlls his fans by being there much like a favaourite celeb would in the films that they star in.
I think it's much like watching a horror series with a grand budget a more time for each episode.
With soo many sequels you can't say that they films don't have at least a bit of soap oprea continuation to them but then who says that's a bad thing anyway.
