If you haven't seen HANNIBAL, and don't want the ending ruined for you (and you really shouldn't, because it's quite good), PLEASE DON'T READ ON!!!
**** SPOILERS BELOW ****
For whoever has seen the movie, and according to the $58 million gross of the film, I suspect a lot of you did, what did you think of the film's final 15 minutes??
Were you completely DISGUSTED by it or did you think it was FUNNY?
I personally was MAJORLY grossed out, but in a "good" way. I really thought it showed us how really, really SICK Hannibal was. I kept looking back at the screen and wondering how the hell that was being shown! Incredible.
BTW, any reason why the MPAA doesn't think that showing a man picking the brains of another man is worthy of an NC-17 rating? Sheesh!
This scene will UNDOUBTEDLY cause some nightmares for people.

That scene was great!
Ray Liotta perfectly played it out. On a side note, I also love the way Julianne Moore and Anthony Hopkins played off each other in their final "showdown."
"This is really going to hurt!"
As for the MPAA, well....South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut got away with an R. There wasn't really anything bad about Hannibal, save for the final scene and Pazzi's death.
By the way, great movie. 9/10 is my rating. /ubb/smile.gif

Disgusting. A celebration and minimalization of violence. Gratuitous. Just plain gross and pointless. Foster was right to drop out.

I thought the final 15 minutes of the movie was terrific, but the ending in the book would have been better, IMHO. The brain thing didn't really bother me all that much; in fact, I think I burst out laughing when Liotta chirped "Tastes great!"
(Although I was strangely moved when I saw the tears on Clarice's cheeks while the whole thing was going on. Hmm, maybe I need to go to a therapist. /ubb/smile.gif) I also thought that final conversation at the fridge was quite revealing. (I am still trying to be discreet here, on account of the many posters who have not seen the movie.)
Ah, the airplane scene with the little boy -- at first, I thought that was beyond the pale, but now, I am beginning to reconsider. It is so Lecter. "A new experience," indeed!

According to the man himself, Ray Liotta was doubled at the end by a 70,000 dollar lookalike type robot.

Terrific!!! I need to re-read the book, but I know that it would have been pushing the boundaries as well. It really did capture the essence of Hannibal Lecter...especially when he just throws that dish-towel over Liotta's character.
The scene on the airplane, IMHO, was the perfect way to end it. A tad revolting yet sinisterly funny.
Anyone catch the title of the cookbook on the fridge behind Clarice during the kitchen confrontation? /ubb/wink.gif

i read the book and really liked it. people talking about how they should have done this with the movie and should have done that should pay attention. if they changed it to make it more psycological and less gross it would be nothing like the book. i feel the movie stayed very true tot he book with only a couple things out of place. once again veryone should read the book who were mad at how it wasn't enough like silence. the book wasn't like silence of the lambs! i found the ending very funny. yes it was gross but i think ray liottas humour ahd me forgetting how gross it really was.
PS i don't think they should make a remake of man hunter. the original was great just not recognized enough.

Yeah, it was gross, but I didn't really think it was that bad. Actually, while the rest of the audience was gagging, I was laughing my ass off.

The conclusion to Hanibal was in my opinion hilarious, the script seemed to border on black comedy from beginning to end, with a thousand & one digestive jokes, puns & innuendos.
The ending struck me as almost like a homage to gorefest classics like Reanimator or Bloodsucking Freaks(truly the goriest film ever). So much so infact Ive just put Reanimator in the VCR & hit play.
Ridley Scott as usual makes yet another stunning looking film with a solid Scott stamp for cinematography & style.
I too prefer Julianne Moore, never liked Jodie Foster in the role. Hopkins as Hanibal let me down yet again. In his own word`s when asked about his charecter he said "Playing Hanibal was a matter of speaking in monotones & not blinking". & his lack of effort shows.
Still the film is saved by the red head, an expensive Ray Liotta Robot & ofcourse the movie as a whole looks great. Thumbs up.
P.S
Thanks for the cool trivia "ak"
HANIBAL: 7/10
SOTL: 5/10
MANHUNTER: 8/10

I thought it was disgusting, but I also found it hilarious also. A perfect blend. Liotta was what made it work, though. The things he says, like how he says during Grace, something along the lines of, "And Bless the white trash like Starling." I thought that Liotta was great at being comical, even though it was still disturbing to look at. BTW, I actually found the Pazzi death more disturbing than the ending. I don't know, it's just something about entrails spilling on the ground that gets me. Plus, I actually liked the Pazzi character.
P.S. One thing that confuses me. How does Clarice get her hair out of the refrigerator at te end? The handle had been broken off, and it was clearly one of the old fashined "lock" kinds. So how does she get out? Plot hole, anybody? Still a good movie, though.
My Ratings:
Silence of the Lambs: 8.5/10
Hannibal: 7.5/10

WARNING!!!
ANOTHER SPOILER BELOW
Judging from the scene on the airplane, where we see Hannibal's arm in a sling, are we to assume that he chopped off his own hand instead of Clarice's in order to get away?
PackBacker
02-15-2001, 11:43 PM
edonline- we see Clarice with both hands intact staring at the boat when the police cars arrive. I think that is the logical assumption...or that he at least cleaved the hell out of his arm. Even better would to have seen Clarice searching the lake frantically, raise her hands to run them through her hair and see Lecter's handcuffed hand hanging from her wrist /ubb/smile.gif

I suppose I was more suprised that we didn't actually see the chopping. In fact, I was expecting to see the meat cleaver come down and shatter the chain of the handcuffs, rather than Hannibal or Clarice losing a limb. I just hope they keep that scene in mind when and if they make a sequel 'cause that would make one hell of a blooper. (Hey! How did Hannibal get two hands!?!?)

Speaking about the dinner scene, I found it kind of funny. The reason being that, when I saw Hannibal removing the top of Ray Liotta's skull, the first thing I thought of was the Steve Martin film "The Man With Two Brains", where he introduces zip-lock, screwtop brain surgery. Maybe I have watched too many films.

They don't show hannibal's hand at the end of the movie so he can have a hand if they do a sequal because it could have been reattached.
Did anyone else see Hannibal opening weekend and this weekend? I want to know if anyone noticed that the ending was edited this week. *SPOILER!!!*
When I saw it for the second time they cut out the actual cutting out of the brain piece and putting it on the grill, it just cuts from Hannibal with the knife to the piece being on the grill without showing it being cut out of showing Clarice gag.

Don't Take Hannibal Lector Seriously Says Jeremy Irons
Jeremy Irons has shocked radio audiences by comparing gory movies to ancient Greek tragedies. Irons who turned down the role of cannibal DR. Hannibal Lector in The Silence Of The Lambs was speaking on Australian radio this week. He said, "I don't think we need to be too worried about gory, horrendous stories, they have been around forever. I think a bit of tongue in cheek is probably required to see [Hannibal]. But just remember it's only a movie and if it is very gory, so are some of the Greek tragedies - eating their sons baked in pies, cutting out eyes."
Hopkins Loves to Terrify - Off-Screen
Anthony Hopkins uses his terrifying Hannibal Lecter character to terrify kids he meets in elevators. The actor admits he's thrilled that people are scared of him now that he's back as Lecter in the Silence Of The Lambs sequel Hannibal - and he's using their fear to have a little fun. Hopkins first saw the movie with an audience Thursday in New York and admits he deliberately increased tension in the audience. He says, "I crept in and sat at the back and watched everyone jumping. At one point I leaned forward and whispered, `Are you enjoying the film?' in Lecter's voice. The person in front was terrified." And Hopkins is also finding he only has to stand in elevators to scare the wits out of hotel guests. He explains, "This woman and her son got in and I was standing towards the back of the lift. Her son said it reminded him of Hannibal Lecter's glass cage in Silence of The Lambs and at that point the lady turned round, saw me and screamed. The poor boy was terrified. He's probably scarred for life." /ubb/wink.gif

I really enjoyed the movie, and i really wished i hadnt laughed when i saw that bit with his scalp cut off.
Overall it was still a good movie!
Thinking about it, if they follow the book(i havent read it)-and had 2 do this scene they did the best they could at it.

I saw the movie yesterday.
I liked it alot but of course the first part was much better.
The scene with the brain - like most people said it was gross and sick but coz' of Liotta's character it was quite funny. When he said for example "Hmmm, smells good" and then "Tastes great". Hehehe
Also some other points: The Gary Oldman character Maison Virgil was very creep and scary but in his lsat few scenes (like for exmaple) when he is talking to Liotta on the phone sitting on the balcony with his sunglasses was quite funny. Also when he said "What does he want to do? Fuck her, kill her, eat her?" pretty funny.
Excellent ending.
Overall rating:
-Hannibal 8/10
-Silence of the Lambs 9.5/10

OK, so am i the only one that was truly unimpressed with the end scene?
The effects used looked absolutely terrible, it looked totally fake and put an abismal movie out of its misery.
I think the black comedy element of the movie kept me hanging on by a thread otherwise i would have let go and given the film a mere 2/10, but now i give it 4/10.
Terrible movie, terrible ending scene, and overall should be locked away in a cupboard and re-made from scratch!!!
BAD MOVIE!!!
I say this because it had absolutely no comparison to slience of the lambs, great direction and cinematography and bit of comedy but thats it, no where near enough to win me over!!!
am i on my own here?

I didnt think the ending was disgusting. At first it's kind of 'shocking', but then Hannibal adds in some humor and it kinda lightens things up. I liked it!

Does herculeez really know what a pan seared brain is suppose to look like?
The way I see it is that people who knew the book knew the ending was coming and were prepared for the possibilities, those who didn't know the book did have a clue as to what was suppose to happen. I liked it and I knew it was coming. The movie was a good reprsentation of the book. And it changed the one flaw that everyone would have been pissed about. I liked it better than Silence of the Lambs. And I thought the ending was great. People say that it should have been this socking thing, and that the characters should have been more seriuos. But they wouldn't have bee. Ray Liota was drugged up and didn't know what was happening. Julian Moore was drugged and had a massive head wound so she isn't seeing straight. And good old Athony Hopkins was simply preparing a good meal for his guests. It was shocking in a perfectly laid back way. And yes Hannible cut his own arm off.

I saw it with my cousin, a fireman, and he was the ONLY person in our theater who was laughing. And he was laughing HARD. He was on the Downey "Spider Man" set when the guy had his head split open by the crane, and when I asked him about, he said, "Dang! I missed it!!" What a morbid sense of humor. As far as Hannibal's ending goes, I could barely watch the damned thing.

I thought the end was cheesy as!!
Silence of the Lambs is so much better!!!, i have not seen Manhunter but want to!
Also our ratings board decided to change Hannibal from a MA rating (which is restricted to 15 or over) to a R 18+ , which in my opinion it did not deserve!!

It's the funniest film I've seen in my life. Why? Because it's the type of thing Hannibal would do. It isn't there to gross out; HE'D DO IT.

I was rather, believe it or not, unimpressed by it. Here in Germany was a large cry for censorship ( as always ) and the "oh-so-bad-influence" this movie is gonna have on everybody, like we are all going to cut other people's brains so we can eat them. With that in subconcious, I walked in the theater and what I got was...well it was just there! For the rest of the movie, I LAUGHED A LOT! Call me sick but Verger was becoming Jar-Jar-Binks, once that "pigs-will-kill-slowly" thing came into play. He was an impressive character at the beginning but slided into ridicolousness in the second half of the movie. Sorry going off topic, but I think this movie should have ended with a BANG! Well, it did, but I just didn't bother it much. I know this is rather my fault than Hannibal's but it really was that way!
