Fuck you e-bay! Whenever I actually can afford buying a movie I like, all you have to offer in the Horror section is fuckin' Witchcraft 1-whenever and "How to get laid by everyone" (isn't that insulting??). Now that I'm broke you force me to buy PHENOMENA & BAD TASTE immediatly before your crappy ass censors throw them out and now, 5 short days later, this!
I remember this being one of the movies that scared me silly as a kid, and it's a long time since I've seen this. I never even saw the ending due to some taping problems on my dad's old VCR so keep that in mind when I'm about to praise this one. It's apperantly based on a Book by Peter Straub and according to the imdb comments, everybody who has read the book hates this movie. As you can tell, I haven't read the book so I don't feel guilted to say that I love this movie.
The plot concerns a few old man, not on welfare like most old men I know, they meet from time to time to tell each other ghost stories. When some of them die for inexplicable reasons they have to admit that even retired people have a past and that it all comes back. Literally.
Now that I think of it, this movie makes Kevin Williamson look even more like a rip-off writer than PROM NIGHT did. This movie is IKWYDLS for grumpy old men. If you're retired and worry about you not really fitting into a horror movie target audience anymore, just watch this. One certain scene is nearly identical.
Acting wise, it's all good with the occasional hint at way more than good. I'm talking about Alice Krige, her performance kicks serious ass, one way or the other. Fred Astaire is pretty likeable too, but guessed who of the old men would turn out to be a complete ass soon enough. That doesn't make Melvyn Douglas bad, not at all, I just don't like it when people have their first scene, all is supposed to be nice and friendly and yet you can tell who's gonna turn out to be unlikeable. Anyway, back to Alice Krige, what the hell is she doing now?
The makeup in this one is one of the most frightening I've ever seen and it's barely there for 10 seconds. When it hits, it hits hard, I didn't see any of it coming but I think that's the point. The scenes with makeup in this one have a similar effect as the discovery of Norman Bate's Mum in Psycho only way more....creepy.
I recommend this to every fan of classic horror, if you like stuff like THE CHANGELING and don't mind slow moving movies, check this one out, it's very rewarding. 8/10
