I like to feel an atmosphere and this film is full of it !! great music from Isham, outstanding scores, superb photo work, too.
It stars Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Leigh and anothter actor, who plays the teenager but I forgot his name.
Great scenes in this flick, especially the truck scene, god !!
A must - see thriller but not for everyone.

It was a decent movie, but a bit overdone on the action. (And what was the point?)

I thought that the movie was amazing especially on DVD the picture looks amazing and the movie's general atmosphere was dark and sombre. This is one of the best thrillers I have ever scene.

This was the first VHS tape I ever purchased. Excellent movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh getting bisected by a rig sucked though. You'll never eat french fries the same again!!!

I've always heard great stuff about this film and when I saw it at my local pawn shop at two dollars I decided to buy it. I wasted two dollars. I never liked the movie, it didn't keep me in suspence, the chase scenes were boring and even though the acting was good the plot sucked. I'd rate it 1 out of 4.

A masterpiece !!!
Hauer is great in his psycho part , the action is intense, the atmosphere really disturbing and the Jennifer Jason Leigh scene scary.
give an 9 out of 10 !
PS: for Jason13thh, the hero of "The Hitcher, Jim Halsey, was played by C Thomas Howell

THE HITCHER (8.5/10)- I remember back in the 80's, when I was about 14 or 15. All my friends were getting fake IDs so they could alcohol. Not me, I did it to get into R rated movies (back then it was a lot harder)...anyways long story short the first R rated movie I ever snuck into on the bigscreen was THE HITCHER.

Man it blew my mind, "2 guys a girl and a massive fuckin truck", holy moly.
Rutger Hauer immediately became my favourite actor.C Thomas Howell had made his mark as Pony Boy in THE OUTSIDERS and this film made me think he was destined for true greatness. I was wrong.

There is no doubt the whole cast puts in a solid performance. The film has superb direction and Eric Reid's killer script is the iicing on the cake.

Ive seen a lot of thrillers since. Seen Rutger Hauer and C Thomas Howell drift into virtual oblivion. But this film still ranks right up there as a personal fave.....and a profound personal experience.

I loved this movie. Es muy excellente! Maybe it's just all the testosterone, but I loved all the gunshots, and explosions and things of that nature. I'm going to show it to one of my friends the next time they say 'hey, wouldn't it be cool to pick up that hitchiker?'

Of course I could show them Texas Chainsaw Massacre for that......buuuuut this is a Bar-B-Q town! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I remember liking his movie a lot, when I watched it late at night on Cinemax a long ass time ago. I'm gonna have to rent this and see if it's as good as I remeber it.

Rutger Hauer was creepy as hell, that much is unforgetable.

I originally bought The Hitcher when it came out on video to flesh out my Rutger Hauer collection (I'll watch him in anything), and found myself a tad disappointed. Jennifer Jason Leigh was good (finally found her niche, here and in Single White Female), but I've never liked C. Thomas Howell. A bit too "Brat-Packer-without-the-talent" for me.

The finger-french-fry scene though...that was a classic. Very well shot, and very unexpected.

THE HITCHER (1986) Directed by Robert Harmon, from a screenplay by Eric Red. Former Brat-Packer C. Thomas Howell grows up in his first adult role as a young man driving cross country who picks up a psychotic hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer), who is responsible for a series of brutal highway slayings. Hauer’s menacing title character then proceeds to frame Howell for his crimes. Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars as a waitress who comes to Howell’s rescue, and Jeffrey DeMunn shines in a small role as a lawman who is sympathetic towards Howell’s plight. Very suspenseful and atmospheric. My grade: B

The Hitcher is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time! When I first saw it, I was blown away and knew that I had just seen an instant classic! Hauer is excellent, and this is his best role ever! The scene where the police dog is sadly licking his dead master is eerie and disturbing as hell! The film's music score is downright wonderful! I love absolutely EVERYTHING about this film! This is a solid masterpiece of the horror genre! On a scale of 1 to 10, The Hitcher gets a solid 10 all the way!
