I dont' consider LOTR horror, but Arrow reviewed it so I guess it's alright

Like Arrow, I'm not into the whole "Wizards and Elves" thing, but I am curious about one thing regarding this flick

I've heard that this story somehow ties into "The Hobbit", that wacked out Disney cartoon. So can anyone explain the connection? is there one?

Thanks for the help guys...

Like LOTR, The Hobbit was also a book by JRR Tolkien, long before it became a whacked out cartoon. Basically, LOTR is like a very extended sequel to The Hobbit, detailing the exploits of Bilbo's nephew Frodo and that ring Bilbo found (which turns out to be a hell of a lot more than the first book let on).

You can think of The Hobbit as a Lord of the Rings prequel, if you like, even though that's not technically accurate, since The Hobbit was written first.

But splitting hairs just confuses the matter.

Hope that helps.

No, Ender, you were technically accurate: The Hobbit was written first, it's a prequel, and LOTR followed.

Tolkien originally thought up The Hobbit as a bedtime story for his children, and that got fleshed out into a children's/adults' novel. He later took the material that created the Hobbit - the Middle Earth setting, the Ring mystique - and wrote the Ring Trilogy.

This in turn spawned The Silmarillion, a collection of pre-Hobbit/LOTR tales, of which I seem to be the only genre fan on the planet that's read them...

Feyd, I`ve read the LOTR books in my classroom several times and I`m ashamed to say I`ve never heard of The Silmarillion. Any good? I`ll definetly give them a look. Thanks for the heads up...

Skywarp, I'm no Tolkien expert, but I think you're referring to "The Book of Lost Tales". Tolkien did indeed write "The Silmarillion" in its entirety. He also wrote "The Shaping of Middle Earth". His son Christopher worked on maps and indices and edited several of his father's Middle Earth novels, as well as fleshing out and completing the Book of Lost Tales after Tolkien's death.

Irish: If you really got into LOTR, you might enjoy The Silmarillion. It clears up a lot of legends that are referred to by some characters in LOTR. I found it a very dry read, not gripping like the Ring Trilogy. But some fans I know really got into it. Look for it in your local library.

Tolkien also wrote some other stories before he died like:

Farmer Giles of Ham
The Lays of Beleriand
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses From the Red Book.
Smith of Wooton Major
