Right, firstly i'm a newbie here so if this has been asked before feel free to tell me to shut the hell up.
I've been a horror fan for as long as i can remember, but i have a problem. Horror is meant to be scary and i have yet to find a film that actually does that for me. So come on people help me out. can anyone suggest a film that might actually be scary? (suggestions of watching any Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan rom coms will be met with a beating with a stout stick) ;-)

Don't worry grimly, I've never actually seen a movie that has scared me either, but as long as you love the genre and appreciate it then it shouldn't matter, a lot of movies arent terrifying but if u think about if u were in that position you wuld probably crap your pants. Night of the Living Dead wasalways a creepy one, but that was when I was little, now it's just a great movie.

well lets see if I can help...

I've never been really scared by a movie since I was younger, and like you, it's something I crave...

okay, here's my suggestion...

try Requiem for a Dream. It's not what you would think of as a "conventional" scary movie. But especially if you've experimented with mind expanding drugs it can be a freaky ass movie. It scared the shit out of me...I'd recommend it

Horror movies are really only scary when you are a kid.

As an adult horror fan, I find them to be more intense and sometimes disturbing.

There comes a time in every horror-fan's life where movies just don't scare him/her anymore. The only movies that creep me out are the "Living Dead" trilogy and Evil Dead. Movies like Halloween just don't scare me anymore.

btw ( I despise Halloween )

Requiem For A Dream was the most whacked out film I have ever seen, but it was an incredible film especially the ending. May not be the type of movie for you though if you're into the typical Hollywood films.

Grimly, horror movies aren't just about the scares. The majority of people who posted here, and me, find it nearly impossible for a film to scare us, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy horror just because you feel its "meant to be scary". Horror works on many levels, and if you have yet to find a movie in your entire life that scared you, then perhaps such a movie doesn't exist. And I've tried the whole lights-off thing, I watched Halloween 4 over Thanksgiving vacation alone, in the dark, in my rural residence with no light or sound from outside and I still wasn't scared, but I still enjoyed the movie.

Creepy films to watch all alone in the dark are "The Spiral Staircase" (Original), The Haunting (Orig), JCs The Thing, The Long Weekend (creepy Aussie film), Ghostwatch (UK TV movie).
I rarely get scared by a film but the ones I've just mentioned are some good 'uns. When watching ensure that the door behind you is left open and maybe open the hatch to the loft. This'll make you feel more vulnerable. Also make sure it's a film you haven't seen before. The uncertainty heightens the fear - at least for me anyway. Good luck.

I was going to suggest the original The Haunting (1963), and malaria beat me to the punch. I find as I get older that it's the cerebral scares - the horror that makes you think - that's better than any FX-fest.

You could also check out The Changeling starring George C. Scott. It's got a sad storyline but it's frightening as all get-out.

The Exorcist also frightened me, but more in a gross-out kind of way. But the story does seem to get under your skin and make you think that this might actually happen.

Grimly I would suggest The Ring.

Do you want a real thrill or just something that will "scare" you? It'd be a tough go to find such a horror movie that would do the trick as far as making you genuinely frightened for your losing your life, as opposed to being startled momentarily. What kind of scary are you looking for? Silent solitude in the awareness/presence of ghosts/spirits? Profound coup de grace experiences? Encounters with re-animated corpses? Being watched by a single eye through your wall, who, if you notice it, they will immediately come after you? Guess for your lifelong quest, it's just that. You might have to wait for the moment you die for it.****SPOILERS**** Try some acid!

For creepy ghost movies my ultimate favorites are BLACK SABBATH and GHOST STORY (even though it's loaded with more plot holes than any other ghost movie I've seen)

cheers for the sugestions guys and gals. In answer to some of your questions or comments;
I have seen requiem for a dream, reminded me a lot of other slacker type movies such as doom patrol and their ilk. not disturbing just wacked out.
Havent seen the ring yet, its on my list of films to watch, just havent had the time recently.
As for what im looking for? Not out and out scares or creeps or shivers or heebie jeebies as they are proven not to work, just something that gets under my skin and hangs out laying little memes into my life i guess.
I have to agree with the suggestions of older movies, althogh stil not scary per-se they manage to do a lot more with a few tricks of lighting and sound effects than any modern day gore fest puls off.
This doesnt mean that i appreciate horror any less. i still love it and will continue to. but with the recent spate of second rate slasher flicks all trying to be clever (was ther a need for screams 2 and 3?) i am begining to despair, and hope that things will improve.
