I have put off seeing this movie for years now. I read the book and really enjoyed it at the time. Was wondering if I should add to it omy holiday viewing menu?
Thanks for the input!

Interview with a Vampire is a pretty good, if often a bit too "hollywood" vampire movie. Cruise is way better than I expected an Lestards character is the most interesting in the whole movie. Pitt comes across as a whiny, lamenting wuss a bit too often ( that somehow minored my sympathies towards him ) but in the end, the movie is a good adaption. I wouldn't quite call it a must-see but it's worthwile. I guess if you liked the book, you'll dig the movie. 7/10

I read the first novel of 'The Vampire Chronicles' before watching the movie and I was extremely disappointed. At first.

But then I read 'The Vampire Lestat' (part 2, which is better than the first novel imo), and I decided to give the movie another try. And this time it worked! The movie is actually very close to Anne Rice's vision. This movie may well be the best Hollywood vampire movie ever.

!!WARNING!!

In case you plan to read the novles (which I highly recommed), STOP after 'Queen of the Damned' (part 3)!

Even though part 4 was really bad, I continued reading because I couldn't believe that Rice had suddenly lost all of her talent. Then came 'Memnoch the Devil', not only proving that she had in fact lost all talent but also that she seemingly had undergone extensive brain surgery, and/or possibly brainwashing. I will never read another novel by Anne Rice. And I still hate her for ruining the Vampire Chronicles. Sometimes an author falls too much in love with their own characters. And sometimes they milk the cow until it is dead. Both happened here.

I love "Interview with the Vampire"! It's My favorite vampire movie (Well, it seems like only "Queen of the Damned" may change that in February). The books? I like them. I haven't read "Memnoch: The Devil" yet. But the first four books are really cool. I highly recommend Interview with the Vampire.

Yes Memnoch is much more philosophical than the other books and you actually have to think about it so I can see why some have trouble with it.

I thought all her vamp books where fantastic, and to say you will not read another of her books because she wrote one you did not like is weak.

If that was the case we would never see any movies because almost every Director makes a bad one along the way.

I thought Interview was okay but nothing compared to the novel.

I would say see the movie first that way you will not be disappointed.

As much as I admire Tom Cruise for his performances in MAGNOLIA, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY and (now) VANILLA SKY...he was miscast (perhaps the worst in cinema history) as the vampire LeStat. Antonio Banderas was equally inept as Armand (the most unsympathetic Anne Rice creation)...BUT Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst were superb as Louis and Claudia, the story was faithful to the novel, the visuals were stunning and some scenes were WAY scary! Overall, I'd give this first installment of the Vampire Chronicles a B-.

I most certainly recommend it. It's a very beautiful and well-made film....and well-acted.

I haven't read the book (It's on the 'To read' list) but I enjoyed the movie. It is certainly one of the better vampire movies out there, don't be put of by the whole overdene gothic tragic vampire thing either. I thought Cruise did quite well as Lestat, but I guess I didn't have any preconceived notions of the character going into the movie. The best performance in the movie is probably from the young Kirsten Dunst, normally I can't stand child actors.

Great book - gorgeous film. I thought Banderas was terrific and Cruise was a great suprise. I loved it.
Found the book of The Vampire Lestat a little too self-indulgent and long winded although pretty good. Lacked the tightness, narrative cohesion and emotional involvement of Interview. I think I'll read Queen of the Damned which I've heard is also good and give the rest a miss 'cause I don't really fancy them.
It's a shame Cruise isn't back 'cause I'd love to see The Vampire Lestat with cruise, why did they skip it?
Does anyone have any ideas for who could play his mother?

Thanks for all the input!
I rented it tonite...will watch it within the next few days!
I'm glad it has been years since I read the book, so I'll be able to judge it more on its own merits.
I'll let you know what I think...

SPOILER WARNING!

What I hated most about the movie was that they omitted it was Lestat who had Claudia killed in Paris.

i reckon jamie lee curtis, basing on rusty memory though, its been several years since i read the book.

i think memnoch is one of the best books in the series. i deals with very sensitive ideas, but covers the whole philosophical question of god and the devil very well. a different opinion offered, and one that i find very interesting. granted, the vampire armand was a piece of shit, but vittorio was very good also, imo.

Interview is an excellent movie. While it's a less than thorough adapatation of Rice's modern classic, it's still quite a little project on it's own, carries mainly on the shockingly good performances of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise (Lestat is the fucking man, oh yes he is!). Definitely worth at least a rental, if not a purchase.

On the subject of Rice's books, I loved Interview and Lestat, but thought that Queen was too large and ambitious of a story, with a too large of a cast and an irritating amount of loose ends. Body Thief was a refreshing change of pace after the epic Queen, and possesed the same charm as the first two novels. I've as yet to read Memnoch (hangs head in shame), but I will say that I'm very dissapointed with her latest books. Everything from Pandora on has been crap.
