Ever seen a movie that scared the crap out of you, but someone else said it was boring and dumb and there was another movie scared the crap out of them but you found totally unscary.

I'll give an example: my friend told me Jeepers Creepers was the scariest thing he saw in years. I found myself laughing at how unscary it was.
I let him see the Legend of the Hell house which scared the crap out of me. But by the midway point he was asleep.

I believe scares depend on personal phobias and not on how it is done.
Any comments?

I agree. I have been saying the same thing myself for many years. All people are different and have different tastes. We're all different. Which is why there are so many different movies and types of music out there.
And no one is better than anyone else.
I know that sounds corny, but it's the truth.

I somewhat agree. Personal taste probably, but some people are just very stupid when it comes to watching movies. During a viewing of The Blair Witch Project, a guy my age, was in front of me and was covering his eyes and screaming for the whole duration. To me, I was glad I saw the movie, but I didn't like it very much because not one scene scared me or startled me. I'll watch anything, but it takes really ghostly, psychologically disturbing movies to frighten me. Although I must admit that I get a little uncomfortable while watching those scenes from Jaws 1-4, where all they show is water, skin, blood and teeth.

I found The Woman In Black really frightening and quickly recommended it to my parents, who like ghost stories but don't like gore. They sat through it with glazed eyes. Then my mum said "Is it going to end anytime soon?" But then, the movie that scared her the most was I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I think it all comes down to personal preferences and what's scared you in the past (when you were young). I can sit through the bloodiest gore-fest and munch popcorn while my friends are hiding their eyes and asking me to tell them when it's over.

Yet, psychological scares such as the original The Haunting, The Shining and to a certain extent Blair Witch Project give me the chills while friends of mine (my older brother in particular) can sit through them and not bad an eye-lid.

I think it points to what scares you personally.

I agree that the scare-factor is a personal thing and as Feyd said probably ingrained in us at young age. For instance, while I`m not afraid of water and can swim. I am afraid of things I can`t see in the water and that would like to have me for lunch. The reason for this is seeing Jaws at an early age. Since we all have different childhood experiences it`s going to vary with each of us.
