Just one question. Do you think him or Argento were better film makers?
I personally thought Bava was better.

I'm a Mario Bava fan. He is much more talented than shock-n-gore meister Dario Argento. I've only seen Black Sunday and Black Sabbath, but many of his other films are on my "list": The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Hatchet For A Honeymoon, Kill Baby Kill!, Lisa and The Devil, Planet Of The Vampires, Twitch Of The Death Nerve, Baron Blood, Bay Of Blood and Blood and Black Lace.

BLACK SABBATH is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm trying to get my hands on KILL BABY KILL on e-bay right now, although this has the dumbest german title I've ever heard ( THE DEAD EYES OF DR.DRACULA ). Otherwise I've only seen VAMPIRES AGAINST HERAKLES which is an unbelieveable hiliarous swords and sandals movie. Bava's gorgorous directing style is there but man, did I laugh! LISA AND THE DEVIL reportedly has a lesbian scene in it.

I really like Bava... He did some of the greatest innovations in horror in the 60's. He pretty much invented the "body count" types of movies. But, unlike Argento witch have directed pretty much only masterpieces of the genre(with the exception of some works he done in the USA), Bava made some really crappy movies. Ever heard of Diabolik? I truly love him, but I prefer Argento way more.

Not a fan, but wanted to interject that Bay Of Blood is the same movie as Twitch Of The Death Nerve. That's the only Bava film I've seen, and its historical value as far as its influence on horror (esp. slashers) was pretty much the only thing it did for me.

I think Bava and Argento are apples and oranges, each has his own talents though both are great cinematographers. My favorite Bava movie is The Whip and the Body and I totally recommend it to all Bava fans. It is thought-provoking, beautiful to look at and boasts a great cast, including Christopher Lee as the deliciously cruel sadist Kurt.

saw most of the films mentioned except: The Girl who knew too much, Planet of The Vampires, & Baron Blood. I even enjoyed Shock which most of his fan despise because he did it with his son and his son did more directing on that than he did. But realistically it was like what Speilberg & Hooper did on Poltergiest. The best of both Bava's. His most underrated movie also.
As for Argento I think his movies are good as long as they are R rated.
By the way Lisa and the devil does not has a lesbian scene in it but it does have on hell of a sex scene.
Black Sabbath's "The Telephone" was the closest he had gotten to a lesbian scene that I saw.
