Bad news. The long delayed Martin Scorsece flick "Gangs Of New York" has been postponed from a July 12th release date to sometime in the fourth quarter of 2002. This sucks! Are we ever gonna get to see this flick?

Delayed again, huh? What if it sucks? Maybe that's why they keep moving the thing around. When I first read about 'Gangs Of New York', I was expecting something like 'Once Upon A Time In America', instead, the trailer played like a spaghetti western, you didn't recognize New York. Why couldn't Scorsese set the movie in a little more of a modern era? What's with all this 19th century crap? I thought it was going to be one amazing gangster movie from the 20's or 30's. Now, it's a turn-of-the-century thing. I don't know, not my cup of tea. I didn't care too much for 'The Age Of Innocence' because, somehow, period pieces don't become Scorsese. They look like almost anyone could've directed them.
Oh well.

I knew this was going to happen. They moved so it could be closer to Oscar season and rack up some serious nominations. Right after the Miramax head man said that Gangs of New York was going to be their number 1 Oscar movie of 2002, I knew for a fact that they would move it closer to December. I think it's a good idea.

I agree with DTM- this is plain and simply for a strong Miramax Oscar campaign. Shit, by this time the film is probably finished and just sitting on the shelf. I'm curious to see if we'll be hearing about this film at any film festivals (especially Cannes, where it could be the most anticipated film of the bunch).

The reason for the setting is that it's based on a novel by Herbert Asbury that Scorsese's wanted to adapt for about 30 years.

Damn it! This sucks! I've been waiting forever to see this movie. Aw well, you can't really blame Miramax, they want some oscar nods. And I believe they'll get them.

This indeed sucks the major meat missile...

It could either mean the film is a horrible mess (I really doubt it, based on the caliber of a director like Martin Scorsese) or that Miramax is gonna release it for Oscar consideration, 2002. Having read the past reports of Harvey Weinstein not being too pleased with Scorsese's cut of the film, I'm not too sure anymore.

On what planet is 1863 the turn of the century?

Calm down everyone, GONY hasn't been delayed... yet. But I expect an announcement shortly.

The following appeared at Variety.com on February 12. The only other mention of a possible move was in today's Hollywood Reporter. Nothing is official.
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
"Gangs," whose planned Christmas bow was pushed due to length and Sept. 11 concerns, is reportedly now in a solid three-hour range. Rave reviews hit the Internet last week following a New Jersey test screening.

A Miramax rep says the company is "looking into" other release slots, with some sources close to "Gangs" suggesting it may shift to the fourth quarter to play in Oscar primetime. There is also speculation that a 20-minute reel (a la "Lord of the Rings") is in the works for screening at the Cannes film fest.

Now here's something to wet your whistle from last Friday's Entertainment Tonight (http://paxphotos.tripod.com/etgony3_15.html).

Odd. I don't recall mentioning any actual dates. The date you've just posted is of the 19th century, which is what I was referring to. Ok, maybe I was off a couple years when I said the turn-of-the-century, but my point was made.
The movie is being delayed because Mirimax and Scorsese are at odds with the running time of the movie. The Weinsteins want 20 minutes cut from the movie, Scorsese won't do it.

Well all I can say is good move!

The farther away this flick gets from me the better.

And eventhough it is not out to say it will be the number 1 Oscar contender is a stretch.

Who know what other flicks will be coming down the pipe before then.

I will reserve final judgement until it is out but anything with Leo in it is suspect from the start.

He may feel like the King of the World but that is how the Back Street Boys feel, and how many people over 13 will admit to liking them?

He has yet to prove himself to me so no matter who is dircting I am suspect.

We shall see.

Out....................

Scorsese has said that GONY is a western, albeit one that takes place in the east. JPDotCom23, if you want a "gangster movie from the 20's or 30's," don't worry. You'll be getting one of those this summer, courtesy of Sam Mendes.

But Scorsese wants to show you something you haven't seen before. There was a time when NYC didn't have skyscrapers, ya know.

How much ya wanna bet that the film will remain 3 hours long? The final cut is Scorsese's and the 3 hour version apparently worked well at the Ridgefield Park, NJ screening.

If it's moved, it'll be to better position itself for what Miramax does best: Oscar season. So there. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Common Sense Man, the film has a deep and talented cast, so why do you obsess on one actor? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
