View Full Version : Is it just me or have Tim Burton films lost their magic?

When i was a kid I used to be able to watch those Tim Burton movies over and over again. Recently i tried watching a couple again but the "magic" wasn;t really there. Yet there are plenty of other movies out there that still suck me in like when I was a kid. Are there any movies out there that dissapointed you when you watched them again as an adult?

I wouldn't say that Burton has lost his touch. I consider Sleepy Hollow to be one of his finer efforts. It's got his distinctive style all over it. I didn't really care for his remake of Planet of the Apes, but I didn't like the original that much either, so I don't blame him for my discontent there.

I won,t talk about the fact you put that in upcoming horror movies. But to me Tim Burton movies still really suck me in. I mean, I can watch Beetlejuice with as much fun now as I did as a pre-teen. Same for Batman, Batman Returns, Edward Scizorhand... and never forget that Mars Attack is one of his masterpieces as well. Sleepy Hollow was really great and well, Planet of the Apes was my only dissapointment from him. Me and my best friend are great fan of his work and we were there the friday it went to theatre. But oh well, we didn't have such a great time. But I do like all his other movies. Even Pee Wee is good. I can watch them today with as much fun.

What movie made you say that. I hope it was not Batman. Cause I can't ever get ennought of that Joker myself.

Tim Burton kicks ass! I love his movies. The only one I didn't like thus far has to be the remake of PLANET OF THE APES.

Tru dat! Planet of the Apes was his only bad effort. Now that I think about it; two of his films got 9/10 from me - Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. wowzers,.....

I`d say that he`s kinda-sorta lost the 'magic'.
"Sleepy Hollow" was visually magnificent, but the story was pretty weak IMO (but maybe that has to do with Andrew Kevin Walker`s screenplay).
I actually liked "Planet Of the Apes", but it didn`t seem like Burton at all. And I`d rather not even mention "Mars Attacks!", I thought that was just awful.
So while "Sleepy Hollow" and "POTA" weren`t BAD movies, they didn`t have the Tim Burton 'magic' that, say, "Beetlejuice", "Edward Scissorhands", or even "Pee-Wee`s Big Adventure" had.
I think the last really good movies he made were "Ed Wood" and "Nightmare Before Christmas".

Mars Attacks is my favourite of his. I thought it was hilarious with a wicked sense of humour. It's great fun seeing all these A/B list actors getting snuffed.

Sleepy Hollow had a pretty terrible script agreed and despite the good beheadings I personally didn't like it all that much.

Batman is my main gripe. I'm a bit of a Batman purist being an avid collector of the graphic novels and I can't stand the Batman films 'cause they're too sickeningly colourful and childish and more concerned with gadgets and disjointed set-pieces than anything psychologically rousing. The Frank Miller stuff or the definitive Batman story "The Killing Joke" piss all over those films and that includes the 1st one with Jack Nicholson fucking badly casted and way too fat and old and unfunny to play the Joker. John Glover (Saperstein from In the Mouth of Madness) would have been the PERFECT choice for the laughing psychopath.

I'm sure Aronofski and Miller will do much better. Fingers crossed. 'Bout time they take the franchise outta the hands of those amateurs.

John Glover is indeed a cool actor. Pity he doesn`t seem to be in very many movies these days. And he was wasted in a small role in "Batman & Robin"!
Also, I always thought "Batman" was pretty overrated. Never understood what was so great about it. Yeah, it LOOKED fantastic, but the story was pretty boring IMO.
As for "Mars Attacks!", I guess we`ll just have to agree to disagree!

I had just finished watching Mars Attacks when I posted this topic. i used to love that film. Now I just found it sort of boring. I put on Edward Scissorhands today and really enjoyed though. Maybe it was just that one film that made me think over if I liked his movies or not. One movie will always be a classic to me through all time is Pee Wees Big Adventure.

I saw Mars Attacks ages ago and I remember thinking it was hilarious how all the aliens were so jumpy and loved shooting things and the humans were so trusting all the time.
My brother who was watching it with me also detested it though, as seems to be the case with Burton's films. He doesn't seem to ever make a universally liked or disliked film. Strange that.
Having said that I've never heard of anyone disliking Ed Wood. Anyone?
Can't wait to see Planet/Apes which I heard in one review has an ending that "makes no bleedin' sense whatsoever".

I agree 100%! I sure wish Pee-Wee would make a new movie or something. I mean, what he "did" that ended his career wasn`t even that bad. Come on, they charged him with 'public indecency' or something. HELLO, he was in a friggin` *porno theater*! What do they THINK people do there??!?
It`s not like he killed somebody, or molested kids or something.
P.S. - Sorry mods, this isn`t really 'horror related'.

I haven't seen all his movies yet, but I'll be worried if he makes anothe POTA! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif Thank God he turned down the sequel.

I thought that was funny too.... for the first fifteen minutes or so. But after two hours, the joke wore pretty thin IMO.
P.S. - "Planet Of the Apes" got lots of nasty reviews, but I actually thought it was pretty good as an action/adventure flick. Like I said earlier though, it doesn`t really seem like a Tim Burton movie. As for the ending, it`s pretty goofy, it`s not totally serious like the ending to the '60s movie.

Supposedly there are 2 pee wee movies in the works. That was coming from Paul Reuben when he was intervied on the tonight show for his role in blow. I dont know if they are production or not but at least theres a chance we'll see pee wee again

He hasnt lost his touch. I can still see Nightmare before christmas and love every single minute and beatiful detail about it.
Same with Sleepy Hollow. Same with bettlejuice and pee wees big adventure.
Dont judge Tim for his latest effort. I know it sucked balls. But lets not forget his other cool films. Even Mars Attacks is decent even though it is misunderstood. I think I was the only one in the movie theater who actually loved this film. It looked to me like no one else got it. Any how lets just hope he redeems himself with his next project, dont give up on him just yet...

"Pee Wee's Big Adventure" is another favourite of mine. Who caught the sequel "Big Top Pee Wee" unfortunately not done by Tim Burton. I thought it was awful.

I heard that awhile ago too. But I haven`t heard anything since, which kinda has me worried.

malaria - yes, I remember "Big Top Pee-Wee". I was little when it came out in theaters - I was so excited cause I thought it`d be as good as "Big Adventure".
Boy oh boy, was I wrong. But hey, at least it had another great Danny Elfman score!
