View Full Version : DEATH TO SMOOCHY will die at the box-office!

Just as I suspected from the trailers featuring the overacting and overbearing Robin Williams, DEATH TO SMOOCHY is going to suck big time. The Hollywood Reporter calls it "loud, ugly, irritating movie without any of its satirical salvos hitting a discernible target." Film Threat says that "outside of watching Michos' career-making performance as a cinematographer, the only other reason to see this would be to witness the difference between 'funny' and 'trying to be funny'." According to Variety, "Death to Smmochy is simply not very likeable or enjoyable." So there.

I looked forward to this, but I really did notice Robin Williams' going overboard in the trailers. I hate it when actors do that (Jack Nicholson in both the Shining and Batman comes to mind).

And when has the american public ever listened to reviewers?????

I think this movie looks great, and if it does bomb, it will be because it's a movie starring Robin Williams rated R for language and "a sexual reference", something that most people just won't be ready for. Plus, you know, black comedy is a black hole, box office wise.

The trailer reminds me of that other loud, ugly and irritating movie called TOYS, also starring Robin williams.

Agreed! Smoochy looks like plain trash. I would rather watch an episode of Barney then sit through this flick. I'm pretty sure that an episode of Barney would be more enjoyable.

I think the flick looks genuinely amusing, but dark comedies don't tend to do well with the american audience, so a low box office is pretty much a guarantee.

The War Of The Roses and Throw Momma From The Train weren't big hits?

The cast is fantastic, the premise is hysterical, and I love DeVito's brand of black comedy. You can't deter me from seeing this opening weekend, no matter how hard you try, Max.

I think I'll see it, because I'm a fan of Devito as a director (Throw momma from the train, War of the Roses).

I love black comedy

I love dark comedies and the cast involved, but from what i've seen, i'm not impressed.I'm a huge fan of Robin Williams, but it appears he is going wayyyy over-the-top in this one.Edward Norton just seems lost and unfunny to me from what i've seen in the trailers and i've never been a fan of Danny Devito "the director".I'm sure i'll probably rent it one day, but shoveling out 7 bucks in another question.

I was quite unimpressed by the trailer, but I when I went to the website,
www.welovesmoochy.com (http://www.welovesmoochy.com)
I quickly changed my mind. I'm a big fan of this sort of sick comedy. (i.e. I'm also an avid southpark fan)
I'll definitely be there opening weekend.

Who's stopping you? It's your time and money. All I'm saying is that the trailer looked bad and the reviews so far have supported my impression.

You do know that this show isn't like Barney? I'm just wondering and making sure you saw the trailer, because before I did that was the assumption I kind of made...

I think the trailer looks great. Robin Williams is hilarious, and Edward Norton, of course, kicks serious ass. It looks funny, and I'll be seeing it.

I hope it's not like Toys, though. That movie sucked so much!

Yeah, I've seen the trailer about 3 or 4 times already and it still has yet to impress me. I don't know if I wanna see this yet or not, I mean I like Edward Norton (I don't love him like most people here do), and I Williams and DeVito, but the one problem is the fact that the premise looks lame as hell. I am undesided, but more then likely I won't be seeing this sorry attemp at comedy.

Well, I think the premise is extremely originally and witty.

Much as I want to see this movie myself, I don't think it is going to appeal to most moviegoers. Oh well.

I'm gonna see this for free 4 days early. I'm at the University of Louisville, and we're having an advance screening next tuesday. If any other Louisville schmoes are going, I'll be wearing a green TooL shirt, so say hi or something http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't agree with you at all I think the movie will be funny, and the movie wont die at the office, but Smoochy will! Hey don't judge a book by its cover or a movie by it's previews!

dota - Since you haven't seen the movie either, aren't you just as guilty of what you're accusing me?

Even though the trailer hasn't done a whole lot for me, just the originality of the script is intreging me enough to go see it. I love "fresh" scripts that aren't a sequel or that are not the usual action/comedy movies. I just like the premise of the movie

hrm i dont know why but the wacky-ness of the movie sort of reminds me of the strictly ballroom or something like that. i wonder how it will all turn out.

Originality for originality's sake is overrated. I can film someone scratching his butt for two hours and that would be considered original.

First, filming yourself scratching your butt for two hours wouldn't be original because I think Tom Green has already done that. Second, do you not want people to try to do film or write differently and creatively? Do you want everyone to use the same blueprint in hollywood. Good guy-bad guy-good guy kills bad guy and gets the girl.

He's playing the Joker and in a movie based on a comic book.

Why not go overboard??????

The Shining I agree with.

As for the Smooch......I'll wait for DVD and rent it.

for once, I actually think overacting would benefit Robin Williams instead of hindering it. it would suit the Rainbow Randolph character well IMO.

Since we already have a DEATH TO SMOOCHY topic open here ( http://www.joblo.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001336.html ), I'm gonna close this topic down and suggest you head over there to discuss how great or terrible the film will be. Thanks...
