Why in the HELL did they make this movie??
werent they aware of Halloween 3?? what were they thinking by taking it to the level that they did?? they had a good story going with Tommy's charecter and they waste it with this mindless idea.

The reason why they made this sequel is the reason why they make most sequels: MONEY.

This was one of their biggest mistakes. It had absolutely nothing to do with Jason voorhees except for the mask, and it sucked horribly.

Is A New Beginning traditionally regarded as the worst of the series, the Halloween III of the bunch, like what Haddenfield said?

Yeah, pretty much. Part 8 is another movie that many say is the worst.
Personally, I kinda like Part 5. It`s the peak of 80`s slasher cheese. Just friggin` pretend it`s Jason.
If you ask me, "Jason Goes To Hell" is the worst.

Elgyn..i agree 100%..part 9 is the worst of the bunch. forget the appaling story, it had ZERO feel of a Friday movie. You wouldnt know you were watching a Jason flick if someone didnt tell you...
My beef with part 5 ****SPOILER****

Is the fact that, as we know, it aint good old Jason...i liked the story...i liked the fact where it took place. I liked them continuing the Tommy plot. I cant pretend its Jason because, well it isnt. Even the idea of this guy taking revenge over his son was an alright idea..it isnt too far fetched and even worked just fine in Part 1...but after 4 movies and a knowing of what Halloween 3 did, they had to have known that by not putting Jason in there was pretty stupid.
and some do say part 8 was a disaster. It sure wasnt a fine piece of high art. they tried to add elements of past Fridays but it just didnt work..ie, having the dog come up to the girl in the end almost like part 2.. again the feel was a bit off..not being in the woods but on a boat will do that...i will say, like everyone since part 5, it was cut to shreads and its tough to get around 5 minutes of a stalk scene with no pay off...i liked jason without the mask..i even like the fact he bacame a kid again even tho it make no sence and was pointless...but it did take a while to get to that point!

I rather enjoyed part 5, it was campy and cheesy. BUT I wanted it to be at a camp site not a mental hospital.
It has good gore, good nudity, and some fun scenes.

I really didn't mind part 5. I think that part 8 was definitely the worst of the series.
I can understand where people who hate it are coming from, but does it really matter that much if it's not Jason? I mean, he wore a hockey mask just like Jason, he killed plenty of people, what's the big deal? Why does it matter that much that it wasn't Jason? I only watch the Friday the 13th movies for one thing, to see stupid people get murdered, and that's what I got. I honestly didn't care at all that it wasn't Jason. And after all, at least they tried to do something different.

**********Possible Spoilers******************
I liked Part 5 as well, I enjoyed the road they toyed with taking (having Tommy become the "next" Jason). Along with some good gore and some damn good T&A.

Jason Goes to Hell is actually one of my fav. in the series. It has an Evil Dead feel to it. (actually I think the Necronomicon is in the film) 5 sucked gorilla balls!

Well it seems that at the end of part 4 little corey feldman put a machete through jasons eye and "killed" our good buddy jason. Remember that at this point in the series jason was still somewhat human and not zombie jason. However the final chapter grossed the most money out of the friday franchise so the studio execs decided that they needed another sequel. But with jason dead for good this time they decided that they should just try to continue the series without him. However this idea flopped so they decided that they needed jason back and brought him back as an undead for part 6. At this point he becomes zombie jason and shows no signs of humanity. He no longer runs or even backs away like he did in the early days. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

It's not even really the fact that i'ts not Jason that bothers me. The movie is just not exciting. For starters, horrible characters. Reggie, the stuttering kid...i mean for crying out loud you can't get more annoying if you tried. Also, the action was pretty lackluster, and the ending felt limp to me
More importantly however, we have to look at this film with some historical perspective. Most of us agree that part 4 was pretty kickass. And I'd venture to say that we also feel that Part 6 is possibly the best in the series. So, my point is that now, in 2002 we are looking at a mediocre movie with a wierd premise sandwiched in between two of the films that are considered top notch in this series. Do you see what I'm saying? It's impossible for us to look at the film without some sort of bias to either the Jason character himself or the other movies in the series. Our historical perspective makes that impossible...lol...only a horror fan could make a discussion on the Friday the 13th films sound like an intellectual lecture...

Of course! The insanely stupid characters is one of the things that makes this movie a cheese classic!

not for me, I like cheesy characters, but not annoying ones. For instance, I loved the crazy 80's guy Cort with the ripped jeans in Jason Lives. He's cheesy as hell, but never annoying...he's just funny.
