I would say suspense thriller. The horror genre (as we know it) had not really been reincarnated at that point. Horror itself had more or less died by 1960 and been replaced by shlock films about aligator men and other Sci-Fi inspired nonsense.

All of Hitchcock's films were meant to be suspense thrillers.

Although I DO credit Psycho as being the stepping stone to the modern day slasher flicks.

Like The Silence of the Lambs, some consider Psycho horror & others don't.
I, for one, classify both films as horror.

Psycho has some horror elements, and it did influence Halloween, but it's still not a "horror movie."

I agree. Although it did influence horror movies i dont think its horror. I would classify it as a suspense psychological thriller. Thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I thought Norman Bates was very creepy.
he did a few of the sequals to the movie..but he really sucked in them.
and I should mention(if you have seen the remake of psycho)thatwhatsisname's
performance really really blew....the man could not hold an F'ing candle to Perkins'.

Thats Vince Vaughn that your talkin bout Romero. And your right Anthony Perkins is the only one who can play Norman Bates. He MADE that character. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

OH THANK GOD! Vince Vaughn yankin the chain has given me nightmares 4 the last 4 days (I just bought it, since I luv horror, i had not seen it) And Arburgast's death was it the same or less gory in the original?

Even though by today's standards PSYCHO is not really horror, generally Hitchcock's masterpiece is categorized within that genre, along with his next movie: THE BIRDS. Those are the only two movies of his (out of over 50) that film buffs classify as horror. Although I think SHADOW OF A DOUBT comes close as well as FRENZY. Sure, they're not the splatterific kills we see nowadays, but for my money I'll take the 'Neck-tie Killer' in FRENZY anyday.

In later years, however, I think Psycho has become retroactively included in the Horror genre. Since Psycho's II-IV are obviously horror/slasher flicks, they kind of drag their big brother into the genre with them.

it was OK, I think they could have done better, this film had three major faults

1: The scene with Norman Bates yanking the chain, uggh, that was unnecessary
2: Vincer Vaughn is nor Norman Bates, lets face it
3; THE BLOODY CANDY!!!

PS: Did anyone else find Norman's constant candy addiction annoying???
