Well to answer your question theres been speculation that Jason never really drowned in the lake. Instead he sort of just escaped and grew up to be a hermit in the woods. He stayed away from people and hunted animals to survive. However later in life he witnessed his mothers beheading and went on to clear the area of anyone who inhabited it as a means for extracting revenge. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I have never thought of it that way, Teenkiller. It really makes sense to think that Jason didn't drown in the first place..
and some sort of humiliation that he suffered as a boy could probably explain why Feldman was the only one who could actually kill him. somehow the shock of seeing a lookalike of him, or as best as the kid could do, put ol' Jason into shock, and let him kill him.
WOW! I'm going to rent the friday movies right now!!!

I think Jason has a psychic link with his mother, and influenced her to kill, in order to exact revenge for his near-drowning!

I never really thought it was intended for him to DIE in the lake. I think he was just under-water long enough to suffer severe brain damage. (Lack of oxygen to the brain and all that.)
Remember when the psych student referred to him as a "frightened retard" in Part 2? I think she was right on the money.

the sequels seem to be built on the premise of him drowning, because certain things just wouldn't make sense otherwise. for instance, him being killed and brought back to life from the bottom of the lake by a bolt of lightning. also, the increasing deformity of his features throughout the series. if you notice in the dream sequence in the first movie when he rises from the lake, he is somewhat deformed but not that much. then as the series progresses his features become more deformed, his skin becomes more discolored and all his hair is gone. physiologically, it makes sense that after being submerged underwater for long periods of time your flesh would warp and expand and your hair would fall out, just like jason. i would assume that the sequels were based on the original premise, but i guess only the people originally involved in making the film know for sure.

my take on it is this: he drowned, and by some inexplicable force was struck by lightning and brought back as some sort of zombie. but originally he didn't go around killing people. he probably didn't have the mental capacity and maturity to feel resentment and hatred for not being rescued or maybe didn't even remember it at all. he just sort of lived as a harmless recluse. it was his mother who was taking revenge for his drowning. then when his mother was killed he found her body and realized what happened and he began killing people simply to avenge his mother.

ok, heres my take, he did not drown, but lived off like a recluse, AND was getting water in time to see Mom get her head chopped off, he then felt hatred toward the human race in general or all that hurt him
