View Full Version : When did you know Freddy had sold out?

-When I first saw Fred Krueger standing on a sandy beach, wearing sunglasses in Dream Master that's when I knew he had sold out.
-When I saw him riding a broom and cackling like a witch in the opening of Freddy's Dead, that's when I knew that he went beyond selling out and just made a TOTAL ass of himself. I remember thinking to myself during that scene: "Freddy, what the fuck are you doing?"

yes Arrow you are correct, and sometime inbetween those two points he rode a skateboard...that was the moment when I realized it.

I couldn't have said it any better myself... I try to forget Freddy's Dead, I have the DVD but it's hidden in my closet...

With Part 4 - The Dream Master which sucked, sucks and will always suck. I think he sold out with Part 3, but in an okay way. Part 4 was the time when this series went to shit. Freddy's Dead is a logical resault from Part 4 but it doesn't suck as hard imo.

When he did that comercial, "this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs", that was selling out, but it was damn funny!

Um, I like The Dream Master. It's got imaginative direction and creative kills (and a decent 80's soundtrack). I'd say it's better than Dream Warriors, which moves kinda slow and has the worst acting in the series (which is saying something). Yeah, the nurse is hot, but {SPOILER} killing Nancy at the end was just cruel - who thought it was a good idea to kill off the heroine in a successful franchise? (Remember the outrage when Alien 3 was released?)
Anyway, let's not rag on NOES4 too much, when there's Freddy's Dead to kick around, eh?

Memorable scene, but during the "Welcome to Prime Time, bitch!" bit in ANOES 3, I knew that Freddy would never be the same again. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

As a child of the 80's I really like the sold out freddy as much as the early dark freddy. His one liners are part of his appeal to me. Part 6 was over the edge though. I liked the whole oz reference with the witch but the power glove thing was just silly. What would kill it for me is if they do freddy versus jason. I know they wont' be able to pull it off with out freddy looking like an idiot.

Hey! You don't like us ragging on part 4, do you? Then don't rag on part 3. Part 3 was the best sequel to the series (before New Nightmare, that is) and who cares if Nancy died? Big damn deal! I love it when a horror movie likes to actually get the balls to do something like that to catch me offguard. Also, Alien 3 was cool, too. Ripley finally got to end her nightmare (also, it would've been much better if 30 minutes of the film weren't butchered out which had more plot and character development). You want us to show respect for what you like? Well, show us respect for what we like. Also, part 4 and 5 were interesting and a fun watch, but had so much more potential, but they were alright overall. I liked them.

He began to sell out in part 3, then completely sold out by part 4, in part 6 he juts made a fucking ass of himself.

Well, I think that THE DREAM MASTER is by far the worst in the entire series. It's full of crap ideas, like the pizza bullcrap (for me, the worst scene in Freddy's history) or the "death by cockroach transformation". Maybe that's imaginative directing but dammit, I think it sucks arse! It's over-the-top and cheesy in a shameful way, the last thing I'd ever wish on a once cool villan like Freddy. Freddy's Dead may not be a good movie but it's way less embarrassing than The Dream Master. At this point, the series have become complete camp anyway, who expected a serious horrormovie after Part 4? Arrow is right when he says that Freddy makes a total ass of himself in Freddy's Dead but at least they didn't try to make him an "imaginative" villan again. Part 4 went that way : Let's put as many stupid ideas in a script that we can imagine and put Freddy's name on it. Part 6 worked that way : Let's make an all-out comedy, that's the only thing that can resault after Parts 4 and 5 (which I liked slightly better).
BTW, I thought it was a "balls-out" move to kill Nancy at the end of part 3. That's why I disagree with people who say this movie was Freddy's demise. It was still "horror" enough and in a different vain as THE DREAM MASTER. I don't think that many people accuse the ALIEN series of having sold out (with killing the lead in Part 3, which is the most depressing movie in a not quite lightweight series).

Well, Wes Craven did have that done to try to prevent many more sequels to be made. But unfortunately, it didn't work. Wish it did, though.

I'm with the majority here. For me, NOES4 was the "selling out" point in Freddy's career (also his lowest). The sole purpose of that film was to reap in loads of cash, and it shows. The terrible soundtrack (sorry FeverDog, but Sinead O'Connor’s “Put Your Hands on Me?” How does that song tie in with the series in any way, shape, or form?), the beachside bit, the resurrection by dog urine, the de-characterization of the remaining characters from NOES3, Freddy rapping over the end credits, and the silly kung-fu showdown practically hack this sequel to pieces. It's fairy enjoyable on a b-movie level, but taking into consideration Nightmare's dark roots, it's a big disappointment.

damn, that last photo was ugly.
Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite series. I know Freddy is a whore, but I just like the whole idea of a nightmare character that persecute you in general. I love part 1-3-4-5-6-7 in some ways cause they all follow this patern. It's also may be cause, like many movies, they are great souvenir from my youth.
Freddy sold out begining in part three and then in part 6 freddy dead he completely went over the line.....The power Glove....That was stupid as hell...
