View Full Version : Serious Exorcist Issues

Hullo board I'm new - and I have a confession to make. I have some serious issues with one horror movie - The Exorcist. I love horror movies over any other genre and I usually get scared pretty easily, actually, even at really dumb things (an episode of First Wave had me squirming the other day). With the Exorcist though, it's totally different - that movie PROFOUNDLY disturbed me. I think it's the only film that's actually given me nightmares. The one thing in particular that scared me was the subliminal image of that white face that was flashed throughout the film. Can anyone else relate to this??

Hey Gretchen,welcome to the boards girl! I thought The Exorcist was boring. Yeah,it bored the hell out of me. There were a couple of scenes that were good (The green puke scene),but it just got too boring for me.

Now back to you,you said it disturbed you. Did you like the film or not?

I like the Exorcist, and it definetly creeped me out. It isn't as scary as hyped out to be, though.

It gets pretty creepy, but the buildup is wayyy too slow.

I thought the movie itself was brilliantly made - probably one of the most effective psychological thrillers I've ever seen. I think what scared me so much was how horrific the movie was, and how the events portrayed in it so realistically affected the characters. I saw the re-released version in theatres last year and almost had to leave - people in the audience were screaming, leaving, etc. Brutal!

Hey whatsup Gretchen, welcome to the board...

I won't argue with you, those damn demon faces are very creepy, they had me freaked out. I've got to say that if you haven't seen "the version you've never seen" on DVD then you're missing out. I've got a kick ass sound system and that movie really came alive, I've never seen anything like it.

Hi Gretchen! ( I already posted at your Unnameable topic butnevermind...)

Well, I like the Exorcist but I find it's themes ( mocking catholics ) hopelessly dated. I might be able to relate to your feelings towards this movie if you hypnotize me to think it's still 1974 or whenever the sight of a girl masturbating with a cross actually shocked people. I mean, the movie is good and all but it's hopelessly overhyped and I would recommend it only for historical reasons.

wow, I dont' know about you guys, but I don't care how much shit you've supposedly seen, if a little girl masturbating with a cross (violently I might add) doesn't disturb you that's just seriously fucked up...

Hey Gretchen! Welcome to the Boards!
What really helped me get into the movie......and it still does creep me out after watching it several times.......is Ellen Burstyn's acting......that woman is one of the greatest actresses ever, and was TOTALLY believeable....

The Exorcist is spectacular filmaking, from start to finish it never bores me, and i've seen it about 100 some times.

I can totaly understand how it disturbes people, it disturbs me alot! The first time my sister saw it, she seriously freaked out and follwed my mom everywere, she could not be left alone for days (and she was 17).

I do not see how it is boring! I NEVER WILL UNDERSTAND!! Im gonna cry http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

This is the best, the scariest, the most disturbing horror flick ever made. I also just cannot see how this film is boring, and not scary. The first time I saw it, I was shaking, scared out of my mind the whole day. incredible I N C R E D I B L E film that never gets old no matter how many times I watch it. The re-issue in 2000 was even better, adding the one of the best deleted scenes from the film back, the spider-walk. Plus it kicked ass to see it in theatres again. 10/10

Boring... Hah! That's funny and pretty damn expected. The "slow build-up" is extremely interesting and quite needed. Without it, the movie would be less effective. Can't you understand THAT!!?? GOD!###@@!!!!!!! Fuc$ing idiots! *grumble* *groan* That's why it's called "intelligent filmaking." I'll just say that it's just not your umm...cup of tea.

teenkiller, I think indy has some "serious Exorcist issues" of his own.....I didn't even get that reaction from anybody when I said that I hated ROTLD!!!!
Indyjjjj--cool 'er down, eh? We're all alowed to think whatever we want about these "classic" movies.
~~~and as for "intelligent filmaking" being ones "cup of tea".....we're talking about horror movies(!!!)....NOT adaptations of Lillian Hellman's plays!! (no offense or anything, man) I, personally, love to watch a mindless B-movie, and NOT have to worry about silly pretense....but the Exorcist....well that, I guess, is an exception.....
Hey I enjoy B-Movies too. Killer Klownz, Hell Night, they're all good. The Exorcist seems to be just a case of people not willing to take the journey. It's the opposite of Resident Evil. I guess Exorcist is missing flashy editing, jump kicks, and some advanced government crack team. Exorcist isn't my favorite horror, but that movie just breathes and broods to me, enhanced with the slow buildup.
You want to really have nightmares, do a frame by frame until you get to that shot then freeze it!
YIKES!!
And believe me, it takes a lot to scare me!
I'm a make up artist & I want to recreate this on someone but I can't look at it long enough to get details.
Yeah this movie gets to me. But Gretchen consider yourself lucky you did not have my sister. One night after I watched this movie as a seven year old I went to bed scared but no my sister couldnt let it go so she took her big barbie beauty head ( the ones you can put makeup on and do their hair) She ratted the hair and put on some hideous makeup and put it in the center of my room as I slept. Thunder awakened me, I sat up in bed, lightning hit and lit up my room and sure enough I ran screaming to my mama, ahhhhhh Reagan is going to kill me. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif Funny now but back then I was tramatized and almost pissed my Smurf PJ's.
I watched this movie on TV, not expecting to like it. In the beginning, I was bored, but I kept watching. When, it showed that white face that Gretchen was talking about, I freaked. That was one of the scariest(unexpected)images that I can remember ever seeing in horror movie. The movie was ok(7/10), but I'll never forget it.
this film is absolutly brilliant. it is brilliant due to the extreme talent of everyone involved. we see a Real character suffer, and a REAL family nearly torn apart by an equally REAL evil (at least in the mind of some). terrifying, disturbing and thought-provoking. A+
I also found Exorcist pretty boring. And I thought Exorcist 3 was a lot creepier. And a lot more effective on me.
