View Full Version : HELP ME: I'm SLOWLY drifting away from the HORROR GENRE!

I hate to say this, but I'm slowly losing all interest in the horror genre. I haven't seen a horror film in about 2 months, and have no interest in doing so. I saw THE CONVENT sitting on the shelf at Hollywood Video, and I just didn't want it. And I've been eagerly anticipating this film for so long. I planned on renting it the first day it came out, but now I don't plan on seeing it at all. Weird. Not only that, but I haven't even walked down the horror isle since Halloween. What's happening to me!
Now don't get me wrong, I still love the genre, just not nearly as much as I used to. Never before would I have rented THE SCORE over THE CONVENT, and never before would I not walk down the horror isle. Lately, I have been renting classic films. I have also rented some foreign flicks. I've rented new releases that got good word of mouth. But I have not rented horror. Now, maybe I just need a break because I overdosed on horror in October. Or maybe it's just the time of year.
More later...

Yeah, you're just going through a dry spell. Soon you'll be renting 'em again in no time at all! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hmm maybe you should give it all a break, you know. I lost my interest in IRON MAIDEN with 15 and entered my 18th birthday as one of the most die-hard fans. If you're overdosing, you're getting sick of it. That's like eating Spaghetti 4 weeks all day. I love Spaghetti but not 4 weeks in a row, if you know what I mean. I say, check out every non-horrormovie you want. Time will pass and soon you will find that somethings missing. And you will reckognize that something as your love to horror movies. And then you will ask yourself "Should I rent some horror?" and either you love it or you find it silly.
(I can't believe how much self-refering crap I can write within one post. Shit, I got an Ego-problem...)

This happens to me too. I'll get on this major horror kick and ride it out for all its worth, but then my interest will wane and my passion for the genre will lie dormant temporarily. The key word there is temporarily. It's like wolfing down on cake and then feeling like you're going to vomit. You take a break from it and then you'll naturally regain that craving.

I have a differing take on this, even though I can't relate to the feelings you and the people who replied talk about, its good to just keep some kind of balance. Balance, as in, not just horror, I average 1-2 a day, but at the same time, I'm checking out other movies and other genres, its a balance.

I went through a period during the late 80's and early 90's when I was drifting away from the horror genre. It didn't last long, though. 2001 has been a pretty good year for quality, classy horror filmmaking: HANNIBAL, THE OTHERS, JOY RIDE, JEEPERS CREEPERS and FROM HELL to name a few. There's hope for the genre yet.

I agree, Antonio. 2001 has rocked for horror fans.

Once a horror fan, always a horror fan. I've been a fan of horror flicks for as long as I can remember. Still, that doesn't mean I watch horror movies all the time. Sometimes i don't watch a single scary movie in months. For example this summer I really felt like watching some George Romero, next came Halloween and finally Jason. So I invited a few friends and we had a couple of very enjoyable horror movie nights at my place. I haven't watched any horror movie since then, but that doesn't mean I'm no longer a fan. Hell no. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Forgot to mention, we also saw the Evil Dead trilogy. Man, Bruce Campbell rocks. Will there ever be a 4th installment?

I love horror. Could never ever get sick of it. Not even the bad shit that comes my way. *Cough cough* CRAZY FAT ETHEL *cough*
As for Evil Dead 4. both Sam Raimi (writer.director) and Bruce Campbell (actor.producer) want to do it, their just not sure of the money situation.
In Bill warren's 'Evil Dead Companion' which I strongly strongly reccomend for any Evil Dead fan, Sam Raimi says that he has written several scripts for Evil Dead 4, in which our hero, Ash, would be stuck at a gas station, fighting off the eonce again released demons. God i hope it happens.
I'd rather have Evil Dead 4 then Urban Legends 3 or I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.

No shit dude!!! I do not have the respect or the admiration or the excitement of seeing a horror movie now than when I did in the 80's and the first half of the 90's. Sorry dudes I dissagree 2001 did not fucking rock my goddamned socks off!!!! 2001 sucked shit!!! The only thing I got a decent thrill from was Jeepers Creepers the rest of the shit blows and I do not consider Hannibal a Horror Movie. I did like it despite my hatred for Julianne Moore. I consider that one more of a suspense thriller instead of Horror. Anyway this teenage horseshit remake rehash asshole son of a bitch crap making the screens as of late can blow a diseased wang as far as I am concerned!!! Horror is not what it used to be and that sucks my left tit!!! I still watch and rent horror movies but only the older ones!!!!!! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Hey Michael How was Crazy Fat Ethel?? I have only seen Criminally Insane and I would watch that any day over SCREAM!!!!!!

FUCK THAT, DUDE! Go get you some Jason Vorhees pills and some Freddy Krueger capsules, you freaky fuck! I say this in the best possible way, of course! Try some Bava or Argento or Fulci or Romero as the recommended dosage of terror Try some Craven or Barker to get rid of the duldrums. Swallow some poison baby! Yeah! Get with it my friend! Horror movies are where it's at! And no. I'm not going to put on a cheerleader's outfit for you! Here's my recommendation. Go watch Argento's OPERA then pop in Bava's BLACK SUNDAY, then for dessert watch LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. PROBLEM SOLVED! Call me in the morning! The doctor is in!

Do what I did: Watch some of the old classics. Or simply don't watch any horror for a while. Even of good things you can get too much.

Steve Syk, try the extra film by the director of RUN LOLA RUN [which rocks]. It's called WINTER SLEEPERS.

You think you got it bad? I'm literally shaking, partly because I NEED my HORROR! I will be fine in ten minutes, but I need to watch the beginning of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE first. I'm back from the dark side! And I feel all tingly! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Not watching one horror movie since the summer? Not in 3-4 months? This is very strange to me. Forget "drifting", that equates to relocation IMO. The only thing I have ever been like that with is a video game, where I won't play it for months, and then get back into it, but I can't see that ever happening with horror. I've been bitten by the horror bug, its in my blood. I forsee it being a part of my life and never ceasing. I respect and admire Tyrone's passion and infatuation, I really do. At times, I wish horror was personified, so I could embrace it physically. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hey SteveSzyk I wouldn't worry about it, there are other movies out there besides horror, in fact there are many other movies I would rather watch than some of crap horror coming out today. There is nothing wrong with rounding out you movie genres
Although I figured 'When Harry Met Sally' would have given you the need for a fix......
When you are feeling better go rent The Convent, do not watch it if you are not in the mood for horror, you'll be doing yourself a dis-service.

GOOD NEWS: I'm slowly drifting back into the horror genre! For Christmas I got the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET box set, and as I was reading teh booklet, and watching osme of the special features, I had an urge for horror. I didn't watch anyhing, but now I'm watching FATAL ATTRACTION which I'm enjoying.

Well, thank you for asking, and I'm doing just fine! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif I just recently completed theHalloween series, all except the third, whihc I decided to save for later that way I could judge it as it's own film, and not hate it just for not including Michael. Anyway, I've recently bought The Evil Dead, and Joy Ride, plus I'm really looking forward to the Re Animator ME edition coming out late this month. I also want to get the new ME of Night of the Living Dead. However recently I've been seeing a wider variety of genres, which is great. I've seen classics, I've seen comedies, I've seen dramas, thrillers, etc.. Since I'm not ODing on horror like I was when I posted this message. Oh shit, this is really starting to sound like one of those "Where are they now" specials about those wasted, and washed out used-t-be stars.
