Evil Dead 2 is not a real sequel (meaning direct events that come after the first) but a remake. Raimi wanted to remake the Evil Dead with a bigger budget, but also wanted it to be different enough from the first some fans can watch both.

Not as much wanted, more like was forced to, since he couldn't get the rights to the original, so he had to remake the first movie, which is basically the first 15 minutes of the movie.

People people...

Evil Dead II is not a remake. Raimi couldn't get the rights to use footage from the original film so he had to shoot a quick recap to bring those who hadn't seen the original (most everyone at the time) up to speed.

He cut out all the characters, for the short recap, besides Linda because they weren't absolutely vital to continuing Ash's story.

Evil Dead II officially begins when Ash is struck from behind by the unseen force in the woods. He is slammed into the tree, knocked unconscious, and sleeps all day. He awakes at dusk...

and so begins night two.

Yes, but because of those reasons(omitting charcters and making the beginning part if the story and not just a flashback) it can't really be considered a sequel, but more of a remake. Though the terms are inncidental because both movies are great!

I guess I just get so adamant about it being a sequel, as opposed to a remake, because Raimi only added the first 10 minutes to catch up those who hadn't seen the first.

To me the sequel begins when, as I said earlier, Ash is struck from behind by the unseen force.

But you are right... both movies rock.
