Do you think the super violent gory movies we watch take effect on us? The other day I got into a little discussion with an elderly man on the bus. He told me that the horror movies I like will one day, if they haven't already, cause me to act out violence. Now I'm the least intimidating guy and I'm pretty much a weak bitch so I found what this guy was sayin very hard to believe. He seemed to be making a generalization. But what do you guys think? Do you suppose its possible for our violent movies to cause us to snap one day? I say fukc no! And the people who do snap should take responsibility cause theres nobody to blame but themselves (Columbine). Just like to hear some thoughts. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Spot on hunny! Pychologists love to come up with new theories but most of the time there is no truth in them! If horror/slasher movies create violence then it would be a new trend to our society, rather then something as old as man himself.

Angela?? Is that you??
(Sorry, but I got a friend to visit this place, but she wont tell me her real name....apparently its something that I should be able to spot immediately....and that looks like it could be her..)
Well personally, I've never really been affected by horror movies...but some of the violent crap that we schmoes watch CANNOT be good for our psyches.

In my opinion, the incedents in the past few years that have been blamed on movies, i.e. Columbine(supposedly incited by the basketball diaries) and a case here in San Diego as well as one in Europe supposedly incited by the Scream trillogy, can only be blamed on the sick fucks who do it. These people are already mentally ill, and capable of these crimes, I think they just get the idea of how to carry it out from the movies. I think that in Columbines, case, those fags where already gonna kill those kids, but they decided to wear black trench coats and burst in on a prayer session, because they thought Leo looked cool doing it in the Basketball Diaries, but they where still gonna kill them even if they hadent seen the movie.

Totally agree with everyone here. It's so damn funny how critics and some main stream audiences always lump the problems of reality with the traits of horror movies when they don't even realize the double-standard themselves.
Some of these idiots love "keeping up with the Jones'" and then blame us for liking the stuff that we do because THEY don't understand it. It doesn't fit THEIR idea of wholesomeness. Yet they will fill their minds with mediocre, bland, homogenized ideals of love and romance because Oprah Winfrey fucking told them to read this book or see this movie. They don't realize the harm THEY are doing.
And they have the nerv to call our films harmful. Fuck them.

Influence from films well I haven't eaten my victims yet that's just plan bad manners.
No on a serious note in my opinion horror films only influence people when there are no other role models in their lives.
If you grow up with out decent parents or any at all or if you have a life that is absent of any influencal guardian you can look up to then that vaccum could be filled by the characters on screen.
Of course this dosen't mean it will poverty,
enviroment, lack of oppintunity and poor education are strong factors that cannot be ignored.
However as much as I hate the level of censorship in Britain I think we can all agree that it is commen sense not to let a nine year old sit in front of the video watching endless horror films.

Here's the deal. Movies get blamed for violence because the public in general require something...a scapegoat...that it can point it's finger at and blame for all the badness in the world. Newspapers and the media in general just tap into this need in order to sell more copies/push up the ratings. People need the reassurance. They need to believe that people do bad things for a reason...not because some people are just inherently bad. This becomes dangerous when some sick fuck goes out and kills a bunch of people with the reassurance that society has given him something to blame other than himself. This often results in the public focusing it's attention on that which supposedly influenced the evil act rather than the many flaws that exist in society that are more likely factors. It's a lot more complex than this...I know. But i'm getting sick of lazy tabloid journalism. It's all empty sensationalist bullshit. They don't care about what the real reasons for these incidents are...all they care about is which headline is more likely to sell papers. Soulless hack bastards the lot of them.
