View Full Version : Do video store employees ever look at you odd?

Let's face it guys, most of the stuff that we enjoy watching is not exactly gracing the top ten list at Blockbuster Video.
Do the clowns behind the checkout counter ever give you weird looks whenever you rent films like Redneck Zombies, or Leprechaun in the Hood or Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Killer Mutant Snowman?
One day I rented Chopper Chicks in Zombietown and as the girl read the title aloud she gave me this really weird look. In return, I gave her the 'Hannibal' eyes and she pretty much averted her gaze after that. What a clown.

I used to work at Blockbuster and I never did that. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif Of course, people RARELY rented horror movies. Seems like, particularly where I worked, it is the least popular genre.

Ya, that happens to me often but not at the video store(i do most of my renting at netflix)It happens at Best Buy or where ever I buy a movie. I remember the look on the counter girl's face when I first bought The Evil Dead Trilogy all at the same time. I could tell she thought I was a freak, and not in that good way. Oh, well, she's my girlfriend now, but she still thinks I'm a freak, except for now it's in that good way.

Yeah, sometimes it does feel like I get a little bit of the ol' eye after they sneak a peek at my selection. I remember the second time I rented Bloodsucking Freaks (a friend was curious, I swear) I felt kind of funny, the first time I was oblivious to it's content, so didn't worry about it.
But remember this, they have to deal with people renting flicks like Anal Antics vol. 21 and Cherry Pickers 4. So we aren't so bad.
I used to date a girl who worked in a video store and I never remember hearing her talk about the "horror" geeks. It was always the wackos who would go jerk off in the porn department. Yeah, she actually caught a guy doing it.
At least we don't do that! Well, at least some of us.

Hannibal eyes lol.
yeah I bought zombie a couple of days ago and the girl at best buy looked at the cover and said eeeeww thats gross. Then I started laughing and I couldn't stop. Ahh a great moment. All the people at my nearest video store are pretty boys so they look at me strangely when i'm renting horror.

Think ILSA: SHE WOLF OF THE SS.
Renting Ilsa is akin to a porno film, which micght get you looks like you were the one who started the holocaust.

The video store that I've been going to lately is owned by, and I'm not kidding, THE biggest movie buffs in the entire world.
(I like to call them the movie gods.)
Its a (I'm assuming, owned by a husband and wife team..I dont like to talk personally with the mighty movie gods, but I often talk to the "wife' about horror.)
The husband, on the other hand, is VERY critical of peoples tastes. To tell you the truth, I would laugh at people at peoples tastes in movies if I were working there too. actually doing that at a record store would be a lot more fun.....
They're (he's) not suprised that i rent horror movies all the time, but when i rent the really bad ones, he laughs and says "and the oscar goes to" or some other ridiculously geeky remark that DOES kind of intimidate me simply because I know he's seen every movie in the entire world and knows exactly what he's talking about.
....and I've rented BOTH the Ilsa movies too, and I got some pretty strange looks. It always helps when you go to rent that kind of movie with several people. They were TERRIBLE movies though.

Hmm...Indeed. Perhaps I'm being irrational, but the condescending looks I get when renting horror films get under my skin. Perhaps I am angered more by the fact that these people apparently seem to be judging my entire character based on the films I rent...which is ridiculous...

I go to a nice little local place in my town (only 2 places to rent there). Anyway I get along really well with the lady who owns it, she knows my name, and she always knows I'm going to rent a ton of horror movies, but she doesn't look at me funny or anything. She usually just mentions whether she liked it or not, and if she hasn't seen it she'll ask me to tell her if it's any good.
Also since I'm really pathetic, I'll help her clean the windows every now and then when I'm in there and get free video rentals.
Sadly I've heard she's leaving soon....darn...

I'm wandering around VideoVisions, the video store near my apartment on the Upper West Side, sipping from a can of Diet Pepsi, The new Christoper Cross tape blaring from the earphones of my Sony Walkman. The video store is more crowded than usual. There are too many couples in line for me to rent "She-Male Reformatory" or "Ginger's C*nt" without some sense of awkwardness or discomfort, plus I've already bumped into an old friend or at least who I think is an old friend. He mumbled "Hello Mcdonald" as he passed me by, holding "Friday the 13th: Part 7" and a documentary on abortions in what I noticed as nicely manicured hands marred only by what looked to me like an imitation-gold Rolex.
Since pornography seems out of the question I browse through Light Comedy and, feeling ripped off, settle for a Woody Allen movie but I'm still not satisfied. I "want" something "else".
Almost by rote, as if I've been programmed, I reach for "Body Double" a movie I have rented thirty-seven times and walk up to the counter where I wait twenty minutes to be checked out by a dumpy girl.
She hands the guy behind her my empty video boxes, and I pretend to ignore his horrified reaction as he recognizes me after he looks at the "Body Double" box but he dutifully walks into some kind of vault in the back of the store to get the movies.
"I like the part in "Body Double" where the woman...gets drilled by the...power driller in the movie...the best," I say, almost gasping. It seems very hot in the video store right now all the sudden and after murmuring "oh my god" under my breath I place a gloved hand on the counter to settle it from shaking.
"And the blood starts pouring out of the ceiling." I take a deep breath and while I'm saying this my head starts nodding to its own accord.
"Sign here." She hands me the tapes without even looking at me, refusing to recognize who I am; and breathing in hard and exhaling, she motions for the next in line, a couple with a baby.
In slow motion like a movie, the sun goes down, the city gets darker and all I can see is the red Lamborghini and all I can hear is my own even, steady panting. I'm still standing, drooling, in front of the store, staring, minutes later (I dont know how many).
I have to return some videotapes....

LOL! I worked at Blockbuster for sometime and, loved it the whole time! Whenever I saw someone walking down the horror isle Id allways recommend Evil Dead II or The Shinning, ha! Its was cool cause you get 7 free movies every week! My horror movie knowledge went up for the year that I worked there.. he he and I wasnt an asshole with people in fact when I saw them pick up films like the exorcist II Id go like dont rent that crappy film Id sudgest some other horror classic that Id know they would enjoy, I actually still do that. Just the other day some one was picking up 13Ghost and I said "dont do that! I know it looks good but your gonnna be very dissapointed when you see it!" and they actually didnt rent it god bless theyre souls... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nope.
If they do look at me weird, it's because I didn't wear any make up or showed up in nylon-work out pants with flip-flops and bags under my eyes. That tends to happen.

Dammit I jump on this topic late, who wants to bet this thread will die off after I post something on it? Always happens.
Anyway I work at Blockbuster and I get weird looks from my fellow employees, not as much now though because they've gotten used to it. I even get to put on movies around 11 every night. I put on Eraserhead once, I'd pay money to watch the cute customer girl in the store's face once they showed that baby again. Classic. You haven't seen Return of the Living Dead until you've seen it on 7 tv's at once.
Other stores aren't too bad either, for me at least. I bought Return to Horror High, and the girl laughed, but in a friendly way and we joked about it a bit. I am afraid to buy some movies though, like today I found Vampyros Lesbos at a Pawn Shop for pretty cheap, but I was kinda embaressed to get it because it has Lesbos in the title. But I'll probably go get it next week. Everyone should go rent one of those vampire porns, not like erotic vampire stuff, but hardcore porn with lots of blood, after that no look you get will bother you ever again.

There are two instances I can think of right now. One is one from this one place all I ever rent is horror, and this has been going on for a long time, so the guy that runs the place must be used to it by now, but awhile ago I remember him asking me if "something was wrong" because all I ever rented was horror. I remember saying "no" and when I asked why he responded that "because you only ever rent horror." Nothing much ever came of it, I have given him damn good business. I remember I rented 5 movies once and the bags he gives weren't big enough, I asked if he had a bigger one and he said "most people don't rent 5 movies at a time." http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif When he has the younger females run the place though, I do sense tension and the creep-out factor from them when I dump a stack of horror movies on the counter and then come back with a bunch more a few minutes later.
And now the second thing, which was just today at a different place, the actual woman who did everything with the tapes wasn't the person this happened with, but this other guy who was sitting behind the counter stared at me the whole time I was at the counter from the moment I put the tapes on them till I left. He didn't say anything and neither did I but I didn't appreciate it.

I really hate the places where the clerk has to say the title of your movie out loud. I guess they do that to confirm that the movie you picked up is actually the one you meant to select. Now while I appreciate that, it can be a little embarassing at times.
Mostly because they always seem to say the Horror movie title a little bit louder than the other ones.
"Yes, Steel Magnolias is due back tomorrow before noon and SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM ISN'T DUE BACK UNTIL SUNDAY! YES, THAT'S RIGHT! YOU GET TO KEEP SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM AN EXTRA NIGHT SINCE THIS IS THE TENTH TIME YOU RENTED IT! Oh and by the way sir, have you returned SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS yet, because my computer shows that SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS is two days late."
That's right about the time when the needle skips off the record and the entire store falls silent as all eyes turn towards me.
Man, I hate that shit.

At my local video store(not Blockbuster)I look at horror movies all the time and while i'm looking at them i can see the lady working there staring at me through the shelf.one day i was walking down the horror aisle and i saw the lady put up a sign on the shelf staring at me.when she was gone i walked up to see what it was and it said"whoever steals tape boxes will be arrested.Smile for the camera!!"I don't even steal.the worse time is when i a the only customer in the store and it's silent.I feel weird being there.Sometimes i walk out with nothing and i think that is why she thinks i am stealing. That store has the best selection of horror movies.i just can't make up my mind on what to rent.

The blockbuster next to my house has completely chopped down their horror section. AND the bastards didn't even Consult with me when they sold Mondo Trasho!!! I would've paid a million dollars to own that movie.
I think they're the only place in the city that carries alot of the good stuff like Ghosthouse, Phantasm and the Sleepaway Camp Sequals, which are quickly becoming extinct.
Being home sick from school today(and rest assured that I'm gonna milk this flu for AT LEAST another two days off!), I had a huge craving to go rent the Sleepaway Movies.
But the ASSHOLES that work there aren't big fans of me. I have a habit of keeping movies and not bringing them back for weeks, asking too many questions, and the dreaded,....... NOT SAYING "HI" BACK TO THE ASSHOLES, BECAUSE IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THEY'RE BEING INSINCERE!!!! ~~Why even say it at all?!?!?

Those movies are pretty offensive, I mean I don't care but that is weird that they say they won't carry unrated stuff. People have complained before, this one guy was like "Why do you have the horror section by the games, I don't want my kids seeing that crap!" Funny guy.

I used to work in a video shop and it was great. I used to get to see all the trashiest horror movies without some Blockbuster acolyte looking at me like i'm some kind of future Ed Gein. They were free too. So I had no qualms about taking home some of the potentially biggest turkeys in genre history. Good times.
When I was working there I would never look at anyone funny for hiring good (or even average) horror movies. However, you have to draw a line somewhere. And when someone is willing to shell out some of their hard earned for movies such as Children of the Living Dead. Well, you have to question their sanity. I know it was probably against shop policy or something but I used to point these poor individuals in the direction of something more worthy. Like Scooby Doo on Zombie Island or something. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I found a video store close to me that I go to when I can't get a movie I want free at Blockbuster. It's called Potomac Video, was called Forbes, then it was West Coast Video, fitting name seeing that the store is in Virginia, but as of now it's Potomac. This store is great. You think of a movie you wanna see, they have it. Thanks to them I've seen Black Christmas, Videodrome, Reflecting Skin, Street Trash, Prom Night 2 and 3, Vampyres, Delicatessen, My Bloody Valentine, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Chud 2, well Chud 2 is not a good example, but where else have you seen a copy of Chud 2 lately? They have way more good stuff too that I haven't rented yet.
They have good deals too, everyday two old rentals cost $3.50, on Tuesday everything in the store is rent one get one free, and Thursday everything is 99 cents. They're opening up a Blockbuster by it, and if they put Potomac out of business, I am forfeiting my employment at Blockbuster and boycotting them.

I think that they give worse looks to the guys who ask:"Do you have the one with that guy who was in that movie that came out last year?"
Seriously though, I can't see why they would think that way. They stock the fucking movies, why would they be shocked that someone would actually rent them?
Luckily, the video store in my town(a small branch called JC Flicks)has a bunch of hard to find movies, a lot of which I've heard mentioned on this board. And the people who work there don't give me any kind of look when I rent a weird movie, because the employees are the type of people who like those movies. I also plan on working there this summer, where the only looks I'm going to give are to the guys who rent "Big Black Cocks and Pearly White Cum", and "All Holes Filled With Hard Cock"

I couldn't believe it the guy behind the counter at the hollywood video near my house was talking with some customers how dawn of the dead was his favorite movie last night. What?? This can't be.... a horror fan working at a video chain. Made me feel happy inside.

I think the employees of my local video stores have a grudge against me and are card carrying members of the "i hate michael lake" organzation. The whole town is out to get me.

The last time I was in Blockbuster I rented Eaten Alive and Dead & Buried. The twat behind the counter read the titles out loud, gave me the most patronising look and said: "You going to have fun tonight?". I replied with: "Aye, it beats working all night in this shite-hole, eh?" He shut the fuck up after that, for some reason. ;)

I know most of the cashiers at the store, so they don't act funny when I rent weird movies...They did wonder why I was renting the PROM NIGHT sequels and Ken Russell's WHORE, though...

I'm with Adam. I too know most of the people that work there, so there is no problem.

Am i a rare breed who doesn't get strange looks at my video store? I live in Norwich, england and i go to my local Choices store. It has a crappy selection of about 20 horror films. Also at my local Starship Video i don't get strange looks and they have a GREAT selection of about 100+ . Or maybe i just don't notice these things..........

The Hollywood Video gang is pretty rude, though.

They are rude here as well they always seem to have an attitude.
I have never really notice any weird looks that they give. I will have to go to the video store now to find out.

Imagine how I felt walking into Jumbo Video, going up to the clerk and asking for a copy of "Bloody Murder 2", just to have her laugh in my face about it. I just shrugged it off with "yeah, nice title eh!"
Personally, I'd love to work at a video store, or even start up my own, with a huge ass horror section.
In defense of Video Employees( I should know I manage a video store) we are not all that bad. Heck every week we have to nominate a movie in the store to be our "Employee Choice" and I always pick horror movies. I mean my last two choices were "WISHCRAFT" and "BLOODY MURDER 2"...in fact im the opposite. The people who rent from me give me strange looks because of the movies I rent and nominate. At my store I carry almost every new horror movie that comes out. In fact Ive found that horror will out rent pretty much anyother title except COMEDY! If only you guys could rent at my store...that would be awesome!!!!

I rent all the time and I never once got a strange look except once when I rented Kindergarden Cop (I don't know why).
