According to [Variety (http://www.variety.com/):

The Truth will soon no longer be out there.

"The X-Files", the Emmy-winning sci-fi drama that thrust two federal agents into spooky paranormal situations, will end its nine-season run on the Fox television network in May, Daily Variety reported in its Thursday edition.

Series creator Chris Carter decided to pull the plug on the show, whose ratings have been hurt this season by the departure of star David Duchovny and by tougher competition.

"It's the ninth inning. We want to go out on top," the trade paper quoted Carter as saying. "We wanted to go out as a strong show."

Carter hoped Duchovny would return as Special Agent Fox Mulder for the two-part series finale opposite Gillian Anderson's Agent Dana Scully. Both actors, whose mutual off-screen antipathy was well documented, are on board for a sequel to the 1998 "X-Files" feature.

Duchovny phased out his involvement in the series last season, and former "Terminator 2" co-star Robert Patrick was drafted in as Agent John Doggett.

"The X-Files" premiered in September 1993 on the Fox network, which is part of News Corp's Fox Entertainment Group unit. Its cult hit status soon snowballed into mainstream success, and the show won 15 Emmy Awards over the years, including an acting prize for Anderson.

Although ratings were off this season, with the show ranking No. 72 out of 162, it remains a strong performer in syndication."

Thank God, because this season absolutely sucks (with the exception of the two-part premiere and a few other eps).

I liked Robert Patrick's character on the show, but it is time for it to leave. I think the writers are running out of ideas.

I used to adore this show but in the last couple of seasons it just got stupid and i stopped watching. I think it lost something in the move from Vancouver [represent!] to LA. Plus when your lead man doesn't want to do the show anymore, you might have a problem.

I think the writing's been on the wall for some time. I've heard so many stories about Duchovny's spoilt-brat antics changing the direction of the show, it was bound to happen. It's well known he's been wanting to get out of TV and concentrate on his film career for some time, and felt his popularity as Agent Mulder was holding him back.

His behaviour is what my friend John calls "Shatner Syndrome"; in the 70's William Shatner tried to make everyone forget he was Captain Kirk for 3 years, to try and launch a career in movies. Let's hope Mr. Duchovny has better luck.

Although Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) are excellent Mulder replacements, the writing isn't up to par.

The reruns on FX every afternoon (4pm Central) and every evening (Midnight Central) are kick ass!

The 9th Season wasn't shown on French TV to date, but I saw the entire 8th Season and think it was even better than the previous ones, perhaps because Patrick is so good an actor and matches very well with Gillian Anderson.
The problem with Duchovny is that he is very good in this peculiar character, but his presence in other films gone unnoticed by anybody. So, "The X-Files" was probably the best luck he has had in his life - but I don't see any future for him outside of the show. But Anderson is an excellent actress.

I thought the show was going down hill anyways. I didn't care much for Robert Patrick's character...because nobody can be as good as Mulder.

Tonight's the last episode *curls up in the fetal position and crys* Theres good news and theres bad. First I'll state the good. David Duchovny will be back for the final ep, that's definitely a pro. It's going to be 2 hours, that's a pro. It should awnser all or most of our questions that have been haunting us sincse 1993. Now the negatives. There's only one, the show is ending, that's a gigantic CON Anybody else psyched or sad?

I for one am and will always be a HUGE Doggett fan. Props to Robert Patrick for stepping into the show and making it work with his intense and charismatic presence (for me anyways). I'm in the minority but I wanted the show to continue. Sure it wasn't the same X-Files that I followed religiously for 9 years, but it was a new X Files that I was starting to really get into. Too bad it was cut short...I'LL MISS YA DOGGETT AND REYES! Im in mourning... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

Well, it is done. It is over. The truth has been dispersed and rehashed and cultivated for the last time. And sadly, it's final delivery was, for this X-Phile, cold and with out feeling.
I was extremely disappointed in Carter's last hurrah. I was ready and waiting like a virgin bride after being tempted with rumours and teasings that everything will be tied in , mysteries will be uncovered, old friends united, etc. And I fell for it.
To me, last night's last waltz was sterile, wooden, recycled, and baiting.

For me, there is this empty spot that didn't get filled in. This sentence that didn't get finished. So many questions and possibilites and it's answer came in an over-used process (ooh ,another trial to decide Mulder's fate) with a bittersweet conclusion. A real, BIG disappointment. Maybe it's just me, but I felt everything was rehearsed with no feeling, no passion, only hot-air and rhetoric. I wanted to believe, but alas, the truth is over.

Zing!

The Truth is out there... in Hollywood! Don't despair X-fans, as JoBlo's initial post points out, answers to some lingering X-Files questions and storylines that weren't covered in the season finale may be revealed in the upcoming X-Files movie.

And now a moment of silence for The Lone Gunmen...

The finale was lackluster at best. The only real action was during the first five minutes (the SuperSoldier's pursuit of Mulder in the secret government facility).

~SPOILER ALERT~
So Cancer Man was still alive?! No surprise there. His big revelation (a planned alien invasion in 2012) was a letdown. Mulder being guided by the specters of Krycek, "X" and The Lone Gunmen seemed out of character. The trial was predictable (did we really need a history lesson?), and the witnesses (Marita Kovarubbias and the chess champ midget) were wasted. And the final scene between Mulder and Scully was a bore.

Nowhere near the sensational finales of the past (especially last season's SuperBaby birth, and Mulder's abduction from two years ago).

THE X FILES went out with a whimper instead of a bang.

I'm happy to learn that the 2003 theatrical film will be a stand-alone horror flick instead of more conspiracy crap.

Long live THE X FILES in syndication, though!

The X Files was one of the most groundbreaking TV shows of all time. I think it should've ended quite some time ago, and while I didn't feel the ending was spectacular, I think it could've been worse.

Overall, I'm grateful to have witnessed it firsthand.

Yes, izombie THAT piece of shit passed for their closing episode. Do you believe that? I can understand your confusion, especially if people weren't aware it was the end because it ends on with so little closure. It's only natural a viewer would assume there would be MORE considering.
One of the biggest let-downs of my television-viewing history.
