When I'm trotting over to the video store and I see a new horror movie out, I'm expecting to see the following;
Gore- doesn't have to be a gore-fest but should have a couple of noteworthy scenes.
Nudity- Good quality nudity, where would the horror movie industry be without it?
Atmosphere- I love my horror flicks loaded with Rain, Fog, Wooded areas, Lakes, Swamps, you name it.
Top Notch Acting (maybe not top notch but definitely decent)- I'm a firm believer that poor acting can bring down an amazing flick, watch The Beast Within and you'll see what I mean, it would have been a horror classic if it weren't for the atrocious acting.
Latex (hehehe)- For special effects, I prefer good old latex over CGI but horror is going digital very quickly.
Creepy Premise- I'm sick of Modern Teen Slasher, I want to go back to the early days when plots were creepy and brutal (like Friday the 13th) with no comedy.

I'm sick of humor with my horror...I want more straight up horror flicks...dark, nasty, brutal and even unpleasant...while I enjoyed the humourous aspects of movies like Scream, I got tired of the big comedy fest that the Elm Street series and Return Of The Living Dead series became (except ROTLD 3) and I really get tired of seeing the killer say something funny after each kill...give me a fresh killer (or as fresh as can be these days) and make him less of a comedian and more of a psychopath....
I complain about 'em, but I still have a softspot for horror cliches: cars that won't start, the stalkee running and falling down, rain, "cheap" scares, etc. and like Requeim-for-a-Dream, I love latex and cheap gore effects....

1.gore
2.western gore. Backwoods gore.A la Near Dark, Sundown, Chainsaw Massacre, etc. And this is coming from someone who does hate country music.
3.latex,latex,latex. And I don't mean the Trojans. Let's give them damn Tom Savini graduates some work!
4.Retro horror. "One summer night in 1976," that kind of thing. Nostalgic time-lines. Disco horror. Drive-in horror. New Wave horror. Leave-It-To-Beaver horror.
5.Monsters,monsters,monsters. Done right, not Species 2-right. Alien-right.
6.Martial arts horror. Rikki-horror, Versus-horror. I need to see Jackie Chan take on zombies before I die. NEED to.
7.And speaking of zombies....
Zombies, zombies, and then some. Brutal, nasty, un-STOPPABLE zombies. Like Res Evil, nice.
8.Darker anime-horror. I'm sorry but no more big-eyes Precious-Moments-faces Mange stuff that looks like Rainbow Brite. Dark, depressing, muted blacks and reds. Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror stuff!
9.FEMALE DIRECTORS.
10.Black and white horror. No, not Rodney King. More Blair Witch Project. Beautiful, grainy, foggy hues. Rich, deep blacks. Oh yeah.

Characters that act at less close to reality.
Good FX, and a director that knows that he/she does not need to rely on completely to make a good film
Good atmosphere. Tone is EVERYTHING in a Horror movie
Gore, Because i don't want a director to me tame just to get the kiddie audience

I want to see a horror movie that 20 minutes in becomes an utterly exhilirating non-stop cavalcade of relentless gore backed up by a sharp script with intelligent dialogue that doesn't sound like it's been written by a 12 year old set loose on his big brothers typewriter. I want to see a horror movie that makes you widen your eyes in total awe of what can be achieved when the human imagination is given free reign and enough money to realise it's most twisted and downright sick dreams. I want apocalyptic horror with characters that I actually care about. I want unhappy endings. I want ENDINGS!!! I loathe it when the evil is finally defeated only for that final "hey guys...there's gonna be a sequel" shot to rear it's ugly unimaginative head. I want to go to the cinema to see a horror movie and to feel the waves of stunned silence radiate from the crowd as they file out of the cinema knowing that they have just seen something so special that words just aren't enough. Am I asking too much? Probably. But I fucking want it anyway!!!!

I like to be disturbed, I don't mind gore, it's great when a well done movie can use gore ...but it is definately NOT a requirement for me. Some movies benefit from gore, some uneccesarily use it, and some just glorify it.
I'm a guy, and I don't have anything against T&A, but I don't often find it neccesary for a horror film.
Good acting, Good character development, someone to root for OTHER than a villan, not always happy tidy endings, and films that don't have to rely on constant "action scene/gore scene" are some of my likes.Oh and good, original story's.

As long as someone dies in the movie I am usually satisfied. Depending upon the level of brutality in the killer and fear in the victim, I don't mind how much blood is shed onscreen. I admire a killer who messes with his victims' minds first, like Freddy. But I also enjoy watching death occur especially in the forest or the woods and in large, dark, preferably two story houses for some reason, in reference to Jason or Michael Myers, etc. I love atmospheric, haunted supernatural settings of rural places or New England style cemeteries and themes of pure evil, real love, lonliness, betrayal, and stifled heroics. I love suspense, funeral home scenes and when a victim is trapped and struggles with the realization their demise is imminent. A nice swift machete to the balls would be fun to see one of these days.
