Hey how's everyones summer going horror wise? What films have everyone seen and how was it. This topic is where you can post all the films you've seen and at the end of the summer rap it up and tell us how it was all together. Here's my list.
Undated:
Alice, Sweet Alice 1977
A Great 70's slasher flick with a surprising plot twist. Very entertaining and at times pretty scary! B+
Cujo 1983
A pretty creepy film. Very fast past, and lots of JOLT scares. One of the best STEPHEN KING movies. A-
Diabolique 1955
AMAZING! I couldn't believe how good it was! The plot twist at the end was great! A+
Dolores Claiborne 1995
A great not really horror flick with an amazing performance from the always great, KATHY BATES! A
Entity, The 1982
Disturbing to say the least. Pretty scary at times, ridiculous at others. B+
Nosferatu 1922
The BEST horror flick of all time! Creepy, and fast paced! AMAZING! A+
Nosferatu (Remake)1979
A worthy sequelto the classic. A little slower, but still a great, great film! A-
---------------------------------------------
July 9, 2001
Dracula 1931
I was a bit dissapointed. A little slow but the amazing performances and it's high points make up for it. B+
July 10, 2001
Last Broadcast, The 1998
Pretty good! The end was weird, but I don't know if anyone could predict it. Not Bad. B
Requiem for a Dream 2000
I had seen it before, but not in its uncut form. This movie is amazing, and powerful! It's very disturbing and scary and the performances are amazing. ELLEN got screwed. A+
July 11, 2001
Invisible Man, The 1933
Very good! FUNNY! CREEPY! A great classic, that entertains from beginning to end! A
July 12, 2001
Dementia 13 1963
STRANGE, but very good. A little slow at times, but overall a great film, with some top-notch acting! B+
Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde 1920
VERY SLOW, but the great performances, and it's many high points all make up for it. B
July 13, 2001
Fear in the Dark (Documentary)
A GREAT documentary worth a look from horror fans. Brings up many good points about the world of horror. A
July 14, 2001
Carnival of Souls 1962
Another fairly slow movie, and another very good movie. Very creepy at times, and the ending is great! B+
July 15, 2001
When a Stranger Calls 1979
WOW, I loved this movie. The beginning as well as the end are incredibly scary! The middle, although slow, was interesting. A
SUMMER MOVIE COUNT SO FAR: 16
AVERAGE RATING: About A-
---------------------------------------------
So I could be doing worse. A very good summer so far, with the lowest rating a B!
As for the next films. I have the Hills Have Eyes, and In the Mouth of Madness now to watch tommorow. I also plan on finishing HALLOWEEN series, HELLRAISER series, ANMOES series, and FRIDAY THE 13TH series. Im only on 2 for HALLOWEEN, ANMOES, and HELLRAISER, and 1 on FRIDAY. I never had any interest in the sequels do to the many bad reviews. But any horror fan has to finish these classic series.
Post your comments.

Damn STEVE, that is some list! And summer is only halfway over! My summer list of rentals so far includes horror films that I have already seen, but am rediscovering: CUJO, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, BLACK SUNDAY, THE CHANGELING, CURSE OF THE DEMON, THE OMEN, DAMIEN-OMEN II, FRIDAY THE 13TH, HUSH...HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE and MAGIC.
Movies that were new to me included: BLACK SABBATH, JUST BEFORE DAWN, THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, NEAR DARK, THE SENTINEL and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. I liked them all.

Well I try to watch one every other day or so, some recent ones:
Campfire Tales - Heard some goods things about this but it wasn't that great. Best part is when the girl from Real World London fame has her head literally fall off. I agree with the arrow, what the hell is the director doing trying to make a 12 year girl undressing sexy? Oh and the twist ending, how great! (sarcasm).
Grade C-
Stir of Echoes - finally got around to watching this and it was pretty good. Standard stuff and predictable though Jenny Morrison did a great job. Someone get her a decent script.
Grade B
more to come...

The Hills Have Eyes 1977
Very good, although I thought they really should have kept the cannibals hidden so it was more scary. Kinda like the part with the dog when all you see is the legs. A-

Come on guys, no one else has seen any horror movies in the summer?

07-19-2001, 11:38 AM
I haven't seen Jack SHIT this summer!!
I saw DRACULA 2000 and I was very disappointed. Although I did think that part where Vitamin C was standing next to her own CD in the CD store was funny.
Grade: C+
I also saw The Night Flier which was ok for a straight to video movie, but kind of boring in some parts. The ending was pretty cool though.
Grade: C
A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: Dream Child:
I was disappointed, I love the series but out of them this was the worst one. Of course I can't remember much of Freddy's Dead but I don't think I liked it, so it's between these two.
Grade: C
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:
It was ok but I was really disappointed because I hated not being able to see what the hell was going on because the lighting was so bad, it was so damn dark. It would've been much better if I would've been able to see what was going on.
Grade: C+
I have to rent THE GIFT yet for this week and I'm really excited for next week because I'll finally get to see VALENTINE...

In The Mouth of Madness
Whoa... A+
July 18, 2001
Gift, The
Very good murder mystery, the ending was a little predictable but overall a very good flick. A
July 19, 2001
Phantasm
Weird, but very good. The score helped to make it a little better also. A-

I'm watching THEATRE OF BLOOD tommorrow, and ROSEMARY'S BABY on Saturday. I've been wanting to see this flick so bad lately, and I'm finally gonna get it! Thank god! Also I'm thinking of getting THE DEAD ZONE, or FRIGHT NIGHT. Which is better?
Antonio Del Lago
07-19-2001, 01:54 PM
STEVE, FRIGHT NIGHT is better than THE DEAD ZONE. And ROSEMARY'S BABY and THEATRE OF BLOOD are winners as well.

Last week I picked up 5 old horror movie. The local video store has a deal, 5 old movies, for 5 days, for $5.
TCM - The story was alright, and I can see why may people rave about this film. The implied violence and the terror that goes on are excellent for 1974. I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea. B-
Exorcist 3 - I was put off on this film because my sister saw it in theatre and hated it. But I really enjoyed it. I'm glad William Peter Blatty did it. George C. Scott was excellent as Kinderman and the story was very enjoyable. A
Carrie 2 - I enjoyed this film. I hated Rachel's mother and the fact that she was a religious fanatic, and that the SUe character had to be forced into this movie. I liked the whole story with teens, and Mena Suvari is always easy on the eyes. B
House on Haunted Hill (1999) - I really enjoyed this film as well. The setting is very creepy, but is balanced by Katan's humour. The story was great as was most of the acting. No real complaints. A
Hellraiser - I thought this film was alright. Not great, but not bad either. I would have liked to see more of the Cenobites, because a total of 48 seconds in a 90 minute movie just isn't enough. And is it just me or did the male lead look like porn star Johnathan Morgan?? B-
This week, I got Alice Sweet Alice, Curtains, Black Christmas, The Burning and Omen.
Black Christmas - A good cast and premis. The best part of the movie was not knowing who the killer is and the ending where there was suspence for the first time. I was willing to kill Margot Kidder myself! A
More reviews as I watch them.

I finally got my Nightmare on Elm Street DVD box set in from the US. I live in Scotland, and a box set was recently released here. For £55 you get the first 5 movies and nothing else. So, I went on the net and ordered the US Box Set which is so much better (as you all know I'm sure, all 7 movies and an excellent extras disc), and I watched them all in one day last week.
It's my opinion that they slowly got weaker as they went on, with NOES5:The Dream Child being the worst, but by no means bad. Just not as good as the others. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is excellent though, in my opinion.

Chill Elvira! You can disagree with people's likes and dislikes in movies, but there's no need for ridiculing someone's name and telling them they don't know shit about horror films. If you want to disagree, at least give some resoning behind your complaint. Name some of the films redeeming qualities. Maybe she just didn't see it the way you did. Respect your fellow schmoes and they'll respect you.
OH MY GOD Elvira, chill out. I agree with Scully, NOES 5 was the worst of the series, it wasn't horrible, it was ok, but definately the worst of the series... Not everyone is going to like it and you need to learn to respect other peoples opinions or you don't belong here...

Thanks for backing me up guys.
Elvira, I only said that it was the worst of the series IN MY OPINION. That doesn't mean that what I say goes. If you think it was better then fine, you obviously like other aspects when it comes to rating a movie.
Maybe if you read my post again, you'd see that I didn't actually say NOES 5 was a bad movie, just not as good as the rest (in my opinion - there's that word again). It's still an excellent movie, but the NOES series has a high standard to maintain and although NOES 5 is still an excellent movie on its own, when compared to the rest of the series (most notably the original and New nightmare), it is slightly weaker.
I respected your opinion (once I got past the insults), so why can't you respect mines?
And I'm a guy, by the way. My surname's Scullion, hance the Scully part. Damn X-Files...

Anybody know any good movies that are watchable again and again? I was thinking I should get Phantasm and Hellraiser. If anybody has any advice please tell me, cuz I have noyhing to do during the summer and don't know what movies to get.
Scully1888
07-21-2001, 02:15 PM
Nightmare on Elm Street 1 is re-watchable, but that's a pretty obvious example. I can't really think of anything else, cause most horror movies I see are pretty uneventful the second time I watch them.
Maybe Child's Play?

Ive seen:
HELLRAISER: Great and chilling horror that is a winner all round / A
HELLBOUND: Brilliant sequel that comes very close to being better than the first but loses that half way through / A-
IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS: Made me jump a few times, scary at places but is not as scary as i thought it may have been / A+
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE: Based on the filming of the original NOSFERATU, strong performances and a great film, although is not at all scary / A+
THE SHINING: Great film although not as true to the book as it could have been, great horror film although not scary at all / A+

Recent Rentals:
Unbreakable(4.5/5)-This one is very intense. It's one of the very few flicks that don't need gore, T&A, or even blockbuster action sequences to keep it entertaining. The somber mood of the film is very effective. All of the characters were somewhat likeable. The ending seemed a little too abrupt, however. I felt a sense of incompleteness as the credits were rolling by.
Final Destination(2.5/5)-I'm not sure why a lot of people raved about this film. I didn't really care about the characters at all after the plane crash took place. Most of them are paper thin, stereotypical, and pretty much unlikable. I like Tony Todd and all, but his brief appearance in the film as a mortician was useless. He was only there to help explain the plot, but he did nothing but cloud it up for me. On the upside, the gore is decent, especially the halfway decapitation. The plane crash was also very intense and well done. Regardless of the production qualities, I just didn't like this one too much. That's just my opinion.

Add THE NINTH GATE to my list. Although the cinematography and lush Euro locales were awesome, this film was more of a cool detective story with a typically dumb ending and obvious in its "mystery".
I've never seen an actor get his ass kicked so many times in one movie as Johnny Depp did in this flick.
And what the hell happened to Emmanuelle Seinger? She was HOT HOT HOT in the Polanski-Harrison Ford thriller FRANTIC, but seems dumpy here. See what happens when you sleep with the director?
My grade: C. Mediocre at best.

Add Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST to my list. Technically a thriller, and deemed overrated by some (including myself at times). I enjoyed it for the following reasons: it is one of the Master's best-directed films (that cropduster scene alone is a classic), the great chemistry and HOT love scene between stars Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, two cool villains in James Mason and Martin Landau, and the excellent opening credits/main titles design and Bernard Herrmann score. My grade: A (altered from a previous B+).

So far this summer I've seen...
The Changeling
Extremely creepy flick. Relies on nothing but atmosphere and the house has a great backstory. A+
Frankenstein (1931)
A bit of a disappointment, still good though. Needed a music score. A
Alien 3
Perfect ending to the Alien series, just as good a the first two. Too bad they had to fuck the series up with Resurrection. A
The Omen
This movie just blew me away! It had a feeling of uneasiness throughout the entire movie. A+
Damien: The Omen 2
This sequel let me down. The first hour is tedious(someone finds out about Damien, they die etc.)and theres not much of a plot other than people dying. The death scenes are not as shocking as the first one either. I might watch this again though just to see if I change my mind C+
Joyride
Good movie the middle slows down a little but it picks up in the last half hour. A
Curse of the Puppetmaster
I wouldn't have ever seen this movie, but it was on TV and I was bored. Not horrible really, but the puppets take the backseat and when you see them stock footage is used in most scenes. D+
Night School
Decent little slasher, not as gory as you would think and the revelation of who the killer was is quite a suprise. The ending is shitty though(we didn't need a fake scare). C
Up next: Salem's Lot, The Tale of the Mummy, Witchboard, and Wishmaster.
On My list: Black Christmas, The Jaws series, The Howling 1 & 2, The Omen 3, Dracula 2000, and Creepshow 2. I also want to finish off the sereis that I haven't seen all the entries in,(Phantasm, Hellraiser, Psycho) but not until I see the other stuff.

Salem's Lot
Not much to say just a good vampire movie. There are some plotholes at the end though. B+
Tale of the Mummy
Awful movie! Almost everything is inept. Characters are introduced and dropped until the end of the movie. I have a feeling that there was some studio interference because its only 88 minutes long and the way some scenes are shown there had to be a lot of stuff cut out. F
Wishmaster
Another stinker. I heard great things about this and I was let down big time. I did like the lead actress though. She reminded me of Linda Hamilton. D
Witchboard
Fun, campy possession movie. Don't take it seriously at all. Rose Marie(from the Dick Van Dyke show) has a funny cameo. B

LukeA
06-14-2002, 04:27 PM
So far I've seen:
Heart: This is really quite the pleasant surprise. Check this one out if you haven't already. An extremely well-acted little horrific psychological profile, with even a hint or two of incest to make you uncomfortable. Good stuff. 8/10
Chasing Sleep:Very well acted and Lynchesque mind-nailing of a movie. There were some genuinely creepy moments, but on a whole it kept just more of a haunting atmosphere about it. Good stuff. Better than most crap that gets a theatrical release. 6/10
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage: This is definitely a classic, in my opinion. I wonder why more people don't acknowledge this one in Argento's group of works. It's excellently done. 9/10
That's all for now, more will come soon
HalloweenShape31
06-15-2002, 02:04 AM
THE HOWLING: Okay, but nothing special
BLACK CHRISTMAS: Hang me, but I didn't like it much at all. I thought the killer was annoying and it played out a little too slow. John Saxon was great though. Halloween is still my favorite.
INSOMNIA: An okay story but I thought Robin Williams wasn't as scary as they advertised him to be.
VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN: Had some pretty funny moments and I overall enjoyed it.
FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: AWESOME!!!!!! My new favorite vampire flick! Bought it four days after renting it. LOVED TOM SAVINI!!!
UNCLE SAM: Pure Shit!!!
THE OTHERS: I'm not the biggest ghost fan and I'm not very fond of the kinds of endings that this one had. The directing was pretty good though.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2: The great opening and Tom Savini's Make up FX couldn't save this one. COULDN'T STAND THE COOK OR THE GUY WITH THE PLATE!!! The only thing that kept it from being worst than TCM 4 was that Leather wasn't a crossdresser!
HILLS HAVE EYES: Not the scariest movie, but somewhat enjoyable. Not bad.
HELLRAISER: Pretty enjoyable. Great FX and story! Pinhead is awesome.

Requiem, what did you think of those movies?
Anyways heres my Jaws reviews
Jaws
Genre classic. The characters are all beleivable and likeable. They seemed so real.
There was mucho suspense but on a negative note I think the ending was a bit too long.
Grade: A
Jaws 2
Good sequel. I'm glad more time was given to the Brodys cause they are my favortie characters. The teens were mostly annoying except for Lois(if thats her name shes the one that gets swallowed whole). The suspense is lessened because we see more of the shark.
Grade: B
Jaws 3-D
This one is the worst of the series. It reminds me of the 1st Star Trek movie becasue special effects and gadgetry don not a good movie make. On a character level its fuzzy at best. Sean Broday and his girlfriend are introduced but dropped completely out of the picture towards the end. Also the underwater sequences are badly filmed. You can't tell whats going on.
Grade: C- (bordering on D)
Jaws: The Revenge
Well I finally sat down and watched this supposedly horrilbe movie(Ebert gave it 0 stars) and I enjoyed it. What was so bad about it really? I just want to say that most of the mistakes people say are in this movie are overblown. Such as Mrs. Brody remembering scenes she was not at. She remembered 2 scenes and did you ever think her husband might have told her about them. I know that if I blew up a shark that I just might tell someone about it. Another thing sharks can roar sometimes and they can live in warm water they just tend not to. Also, in the version I saw Jake does die so the ending made more sense. But on the down side theres no real suspense or thrills to be had and isn't what this type of movie is about.
Grade: C+
So I enjoyed the Jaws series more than I thought I would. Maybe I'll find my copy of the movie Grizzly and watch it again as it was inspired by Jaws.
I'm not sure what I'm going to review next because I ordered Black Christmas and it hasn't come yet. Plus I don't when I'll get to the video store to rent the others.
QUESTION: Are any of the Howlings sequels worth checking out? I plan to see 1 & 2 but I don't know about the rest. Any suggestions?

In May I caught FROM HELL and enjoyed it very much. This month I caught Halloween, WOLFEN, and the BOOGYMAN. I think I'll try to
catch HENRY, PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, HOW TO BUILD A BETTER MONSTER, and MOTEL HELL.
