Can you guys rate Dario Argento Films. Forget about Suspiria, I have that one.

Thanks!

As an Argento fan, here are my recommendations:

Deep Red (Profundo Rosso) - a great thriller with some cool gore, but make sure you get the most uncut version you can.

Opera - my favourite! The story's a little lame, but the gore more than makes up for it - you'll never look at needles the same way again!

Phenomena (NOT 'Creepers!) - make sure you get Phenomena - it's 20 minutes longer than Creepers and makes much more sense.

Bird With The Crystal Plumage - his first film, and a very stylish thriller to boot.

Inferno - again, very stylish.

Much as I hate to say it, you should probably avoid most of his output for the last 10 years - like Carpenter, he seems to have hit a bit of a slump, but I'm ever hopeful that he'll be back to form with the next one (or the one after that, or the one after that... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif )

That should keep you busy for now!

I agree!! I have all these and they are great. I didn't like The S. Syndrome that much, but I do recommend Sleepless (crappy fullscreen though). Didn't see Cat of Nine Tails, that one might be worth a look.

I'd like to add Tenebre to the above list. It almost matches Deep Red in terms of style and visceral violence. I disagree with the point made about Argento's output from the last decade being worthless. All his movies have something worthwhile and a couple from the last decade are very underated.

I didn't mean to imply that Argento's last decade of work was worthless, Psychocandy, just that it wasn't up to the incredibly high standards of his earlier work.

You're quite right, all of his films do have something of worth in them, but his recent output hasn't been up to his usual high standards, in my opinion anyway http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Here's hoping his best work is yet to come.....

I've seen 'em all except for Four Flies so here we go in order by date:
The Bird With The Crystal Plumage - ***.Love that Moricone score to it. The first and best collabiration between the two. You'll never look at cats the same way again. Very good goreless kills in this one with style to boot. Could actually make it as a thriller.
Cat o' nine Tails-**. One awsome train death in the begining and a pretty cool elevator shaft death at the end keep this one from being his worst and too long also.
Deep Red- ***1/2. His tightest story and best acting. Along with his first fortay into gore. Not to be missed. Kinda long though.
Inferno-**1/2. His only fly in the ointment of his best period. If you thought Suspiria made no sense. Great kills and a killer 1st 1/2 save it.
Tenebre-****. My personal favorite. Somtimes the tensions so great in this one you can cut it with a knife. Love that around the house shot.
Phenomina-****. He outdoes himself in this one. Its like three movies(Friday The 13th, Carrie, & The Funhouse) fused, no crused into one. Just look past the bad acting by some of the characters and its almost perfect.
Opera- **1/2. Overrated, not bad but doesn't really live up to the hype. The beautiful set pieces are gone and so is the art. Thank god, there is still style. WTF was that ending? Fells more like a Fulchi film than an Argento.
Two Evil Eyes(The Black Cat)-***1/2- Probably the best retelling of the story. Harvy Ketiel is one great psycho. A comeback of sorts. One fu**ing awsome murder scene in the middle.
Trauma-***. Actually liked this one better than Opera. Reworking of Deep Red so not really original. Like that one, however, the begining and the ending are killer.
Sendal Syndrome-* 1/2. Reworking of The Bird With The Crystal Plumage. Not as sucessful. If you watch the 1st 15 minutes you've seen the best parts of the movie and the movie is 1 3/4 hours long.
Sleepless- ***. Best out of the last 3. All the murders are good with the first three being the standout. Goes downhill as it goes along but never bites off more than it can chew(see the last 3). His reunion with the band Goblin is great.

I've never been a big Argento fan, though I keep cheking out his movies based on others' recommendations. I thought Suspriria had a few good moments with lots of filler in between and Tenebre bored me to tears. The only Argento flick that I really liked was Phenomena, because it's SO mondo bizarro.

Demons is also one of my fave flicks, but as has been mentioned before isn't a "true" Argento flick.

as a big Argento fan, i'll recommend DEEP RED if you just want to see one movie! otherwise try:
2- Opera, an excellent and elegant Giallo
3- Tenebrae, pure fun and coolness
4- Inferno, if you like Suspiria and want more
5- Phenomena, a very entertaining film

Trauma is one AWESOME movie. Dario's daughter Asia is excellent in it. I also like Demons and Demons 2 (which he didn't write or direct but produced).

Also, look for Dawn of the Dead the Dario Argento cut with tons more GORE!!!!!!

Now can you dig that? SUCKAHHHHHHH!!!!

there is something about argento's early films i really really like, maybe it's the atmosphere, style, the decades or its charaters.

check out:

bird with the crystal plummage
cat o'nine tails
4 flies on grey velvet
and his masterpiece
profondo rosso aka deep red

i rate them very highly

enjoy :)
